Risk Prediction of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events Occurrence Within 6 Months After Coronary Revascularization: Machine Learning Study.

BACKGROUND: As a major health hazard, the incidence of coronary heart disease has been increasing year by year. Although coronary revascularization, mainly percutaneous coronary intervention, has played an important role in the treatment of coronary heart disease, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) such as recurrent or persistent angina pectoris after coronary revascularization remain a very difficult problem in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: Given the high probability of MACE after coronary revascularization, the aim of this study was to develop and validate a predictive model for MAC

Learning neural dynamics through instructive signals.

Rapid learning is essential for flexible behavior, but its basis in the brain remains unknown. Here we introduce the PRISM plasticity rule, a unifying mechanistic model of three well-established, fast-acting synaptic plasticity rules-in hippocampus, cerebellum and mushroom body-which relies exclusively on pre-synaptic activity and an "instructive signal" from another brain area. Using a multi-region network model we show that guiding PRISM plasticity with instructive signals enables the network to quickly learn extremely flexible nonlinear dynamics underlying behaviorally relevant computations

Lower limb prosthetic users' activity classification through real-world inertial sensing.

The prescription of lower limb prosthetics relies heavily on the assigned K-level. K-level assessment has been criticised for subjectivity and variability, potentially leading to inappropriate component selection and poorer functional outcomes. This study presents an original methodology for objectively determining activity levels from inertial sensor data, developed through rigorous data collection on 20 amputees who walked on various types of outdoor terrain (flat ground, stairs, ramp, grass/uneven/unstable surfaces), with and without a walking aid. Advanced machine learning algorithms were

Automated Reconciliation of Radiology Reports and Discharge Summaries.

We study machine learning techniques to automatically identify limb abnormalities (including fractures, dislocations and foreign bodies) from radiology reports. For patients presenting to the Emergency Room (ER) with suspected limb abnormalities (e.g., fractures) there is often a multi-day delay before the radiology report is available to ER staff, by which time the patient may have been discharged home with the possibility of undiagnosed fractures. ER staff, currently, have to manually review and reconcile radiology reports with the ER discharge diagnosis; this is a laborious and error-prone

Using machine learning algorithms to predict risk factors of heart failure after complete mesocolic excision in colorectal cancer patients.

Following complete mesocolic excision (CME), heart failure (HF) emerges as a significant complication, exerting substantial impacts on both short-term and long-term patient prognoses. The primary objective of our investigation was to develop a machine learning model capable of discerning preoperative and intraoperative high-risk factors, facilitating the prediction of HF occurrence subsequent to CME. A cohort comprising 1158 patients diagnosed with colon cancer was enrolled in our study, encompassing 172 individuals who developed postoperative HF. We compiled 37 feature variables, spanning pat

Prediction of Acute Kidney Injury Following Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting in Heart Failure Patients with Preserved Ejection Fraction Using Machine Leaning with a Novel Nomogram.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is high due to insufficient perfusion in patients with heart failure. Heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) have strong heterogeneity, which can obtain more accurate results. There are few studies for predicting AKI after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in HFpEF patients especially using machine learning methodology. METHODS: Patients were recruited in this study from 2018 to 2022. AKI was defined according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. The machine learning

Machine learning analysis of multispectral imaging and clinical risk factors to predict amputation wound healing.

OBJECTIVE: Prediction of amputation wound healing is challenging due to the multifactorial nature of critical limb ischemia and lack of objective assessment tools. Up to one-third of amputations require revision to a more proximal level within 1 year. We tested a novel wound imaging system to predict amputation wound healing at initial evaluation. METHODS: Patients planned to undergo amputation due to critical limb ischemia were prospectively enrolled. Clinicians evaluated the patients in traditional fashion, and all clinical decisions for amputation level were determined by the clinician's j

Machine learning-based predictive model for post-stroke dementia.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke dementia (PSD), a common complication, diminishes rehabilitation efficacy and affects disease prognosis in stroke patients. Many factors may be related to PSD, including demographic, comorbidities, and examination characteristics. However, most existing methods are qualitative evaluations of independent factors, which ignore the interaction amongst various factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of machine learning (ML) methods for predicting PSD. METHODS: 9 acceptable features were screened out by the Spearman correlation analysis

BACKGROUND: Nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding is a common method for providing enteral nutrition to patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and dysphagia. However, prolonged NGT dependence contributes to adverse clinical consequences. Early identification of patients who may develop persistent NGT dependence remains challenging. METHODS: A total of 852 AIS patients requiring NGT were included and allocated to the training (n = 596) and internal validation (n = 256) sets. Predictor selection utilized least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, the eXtreme Gradient Boosti

A machine learning-based model for predicting the risk of early-stage inguinal lymph node metastases in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis.

OBJECTIVE: Inguinal lymph node metastasis (ILNM) is significantly associated with poor prognosis in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis (SCCP). Patient prognosis could be improved if the probability of ILNM incidence could be accurately predicted at an early stage. We developed a predictive model based on machine learning combined with big data to achieve this. METHODS: Data of patients diagnosed with SCCP were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program Research Data. By combing variables that represented the patients' clinical characteristics, we app

Machine learning approach to gait analysis for Parkinson's disease detection and severity classification.

Parkinson's Disease is a progressively advancing neurological condition. Its severity is evaluated by utilizing the Hoehn and Yahr staging scale. Such assessments may be inconsistent, are more time-consuming, and expensive for patients. To address these shortcomings, this article introduces a machine learning-based gait classification system to assist doctors in identifying the stages of Parkinson's disease. This study utilizes two open-access benchmark datasets from PhysioNet and Figshare to assess ground reaction force collected from patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. This study pr
