Monocaprin eye drop formulation to combat antibiotic resistant gonococcal blindness.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria are acknowledged as an urgent threat to human health because this species has developed resistances to all of the antibiotics used clinically to treat its infections. N. gonorrhoeae causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea, but also causes blindness when the bacteria infect the eyes. Infants are particularly susceptible, acquiring the infection from their mothers at birth. We have shown that the monoglyceride monocaprin rapidly kills N. gonorrhoeae and other bacterial species and is non-irritating in ocular assays. Here we show that the physical and che

Cytomegalovirus retinitis in a patient of granulomatosis with polyangiitis on long-term immunosuppressants.

A 69-year-old male patient presented to the retina clinic with a sudden decrease in vision in his right eye since 1 day. He was a known case of granulomatosis with polyangiitis and was on systemic immunosuppression for the past 3 years. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in his right eye was 20/60 and he has no perception of light in the left eye. Fundus examination revealed the presence of retinitis lesions in the right eye and total optic atrophy in the left eye. A vitreous biopsy was done and the PCR was found to be positive for cytomegalovirus (CMV). He was treated with intravitreal g

Impacts of climate change on ocular health: A scoping review.

Climate change represents a significant global health crisis, characterized by a complex interplay of environmental shifts and interconnected phenomena. These alterations have given rise to a multitude of health implications, notably impacting ocular health. Our comprehensive review delineates a spectrum of eye conditions associated with climate change-related variables. Extremes in temperature and weather events have been observed to affect the ocular surface, resulting in an increased incidence of conjunctivitis, keratitis, dry eye disease, and pterygium. Furthermore, climate change is linke

Ocular complications of cat scratch disease.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) in humans is caused by infection with Bartonella henselae or other Bartonella spp. The name of the disease reflects the fact that patients frequently have a history of contact (often involving bites or scratches) with infected cats. Patients with CSD typically develop lesions at the site where the skin is broken together with regional lymphadenopathy but may go on to exhibit systemic symptoms and with deep-seated infections at a range of sites including the eye. Patients with CSD may present with a range of inflammatory eye conditions, including Parinaud's oculoglandu

The first autochthonous case of feline ocular thelaziosis in Austria.

Over the last 30 years, Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida: Thelaziidae) has increasingly been reported as an agent of ocular infections in animals and humans throughout Europe. Following the cases of canine ocular thelaziosis recently recorded in Austria for the first time, in the present paper, we describe the first case of T. callipaeda infection in an Austrian cat with no history of traveling abroad. This finding further supports the occurrence of the parasite's autochthonous transmission cycle in the country. The cat showed serous ocular discharge, conjunctival hyperemia, and mild conjunctiva

[Bacteriological study of the strains isolated from ocular infections].

Isolation of bacteria involved in eye infections and their susceptibility pattern to various antibiotics in vitro eye were studied. Different ocular samples were obtained from 354 patients hospitalized in ophthalmology unit. The samples were inoculated directly onto appropriate culture media. Biochemical tests have been performed and microorganisms were identified according to standard procedure. The in vitro susceptibility of pathogens to antibiotics has been studied as recommended by the CA-SFM; 129 bacteria were isolated with a prevalence rate of 36.4%. The conjunctival swabs were predomina

Alcohol wipes are the most justifiably sustainable disinfection method for Goldmann tonometry.

The essential technique of Goldmann tonometry is thought to have a risk of nosocomial infection, and thus there has been pressure to use single-use tonometer tips or slower and more-costly methods of disinfection for reusable tips. Here we review the evidence of infection from tonometry and the evidence behind different disinfection methods. The only infection reported to be transmitted by tonometry is adenoviral epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is also transmitted without tonometry and is a relatively low-morbidity infection. More serious eye infections or systemic infections have never b

Orbital cellulitis and brain abscess - rare complications of maxillo-spheno-ethmoidal rhinosinusitis.

Sinus infections can be complicated by ocular infections and, in late phases, by brain parenchyma infection. The article debates the case of a 12-year-old patient suffering from paucisymptomatic maxillo-spheno-ethmoidal rhinosinusitis, which was later complicated by orbital cellulitis, ending with the development of a brain abscess. The treatment is complex, initially targeting the source of the infection through draining the collection by middle maxillary antrostomy and anterior posterior ethmoidectomy, then the ablation of the brain abscess and postoperatively with prolonged massive antibiot

Metagenomic sequencing in various ocular infections: A systematic review of diagnostic utility.

Ocular infections are a common cause of visual morbidity worldwide and continue to pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enables unbiased detection of wide range of pathogens; however, its diagnostic utility in ocular infections warrant further evaluation. We evaluate the diagnostic performance of mNGS, highlighting its advantages, limitations, and future directions for clinical application. Twenty-one studies involving 1219 eyes were included. mNGS positivity rates ranged from 10 % to 94 %. Sensitivity ranged from 15 % to 100 % a

Contact lens wear and microbial keratitis.

Common types of contact lens are hard, rigid gas-permeable or soft lenses. Most lenses are worn on a daily basis. Cosmetic lenses are worn for non-medical indications. Microbial keratitis, a rare but most significant complication is discussed in this article. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and staphylococci are the most common organisms cause infective keratitis. Fungi and acanthamoeba are also responsible. The causes of increased susceptibility to infection are poor lens hygiene, adhesion of bacteria to lens surface and hypoxia. Preventing measures to be taken while wearing contact lens are discussed

Ocular herpes: the pathophysiology, management and treatment of herpetic eye diseases.

Herpesviruses are a prominent cause of human viral disease, second only to the cold and influenza viruses. Most herpesvirus infections are mild or asymptomatic. However, when the virus invades the eye, a number of pathologies can develop and its associated sequelae have become a considerable source of ocular morbidity. The most common culprits of herpetic eye disease are the herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). While primary infection can produce ocular disease, the most destructive manifestations tend to arise from recurrent infection. These rec

Preseptal Cellulitis Versus Orbital Cellulitis: A Pediatric Case.

Eye infection with or without swelling is a common complaint in pediatric patients. It commonly affects the eyelid, which can be confused with an insect bite, orbital pseudotumor, or panophthalmitis. The article highlights the differences between preseptal and orbital cellulitis. Preseptal and orbital cellulitis originate from other infections because of the thin bone barrier that separates the eye from other facial structures. The clinical manifestations of preseptal and orbital cellulitis may be perplexing, and emergency nurse practitioners must distinguish between the two infections. The in

Ocular Emergencies: Red Eye.

"Red eye" is used as a general term to describe irritated or bloodshot eyes. It is a recognizable sign of an acute/chronic, localized/systemic underlying inflammatory condition. Conjunctival injection is most commonly caused by dryness, allergy, visual fatigue, contact lens overwear, and local infections. In some instances, red eye can represent a true ocular emergency that should be treated by an ophthalmologist. A comprehensive assessment of red eye conditions is required to preserve the patients visual function. Severe ocular pain, significant photophobia, decreased vision, and history of o

A knowledge-enhanced transform-based multimodal classifier for microbial keratitis identification.

Microbial keratitis, a nonviral corneal infection caused by bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, is an urgent condition in ophthalmology requiring prompt treatment in order to prevent severe complications of corneal perforation and vision loss. It is difficult to distinguish between bacterial and fungal keratitis from image unimodal alone, as the characteristics of the sample images themselves are very close. Therefore, this study aims to develop a new deep learning model called knowledge-enhanced transform-based multimodal classifier that exploited the potential of slit-lamp images along with treat

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis.

BACKGROUND: In patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN), the presence and, therefore, clinical visualization of subretinal nematode makes the diagnosis obvious. However when located under the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), diagnosis is presumptive and challenging. We report a case of presumed DUSN to illustrate this diagnostic dilemma and to highlight the clinical signs which suggest the diagnosis. METHODS: Case report of a patient with DUSN. RESULTS: In our patient the nematode was not located subretinally and this made the diagnosis difficult. However, the appeara

Characteristic clinical features as an aid to the diagnosis of suppurative keratitis caused by filamentous fungi.

AIM: To assess whether the presence of characteristic clinical features can be used as a diagnostic aid for suppurative keratitis caused by filamentous fungi. METHODS: Patients presenting with suppurative keratitis in India underwent detailed clinical examination followed by microbiological investigation of corneal scrapes. A partial diagnostic score based upon the strength of the association, as estimated by the odds ratio, between reported clinical features and laboratory confirmed diagnoses was devised and subsequently tested using a case series from Ghana. RESULTS: Serrated margins, rais
