We report a rare case of pediatric facial and ocular demodicosis in an immunocompetent seven-year-old with chronic centrofacial papulopustular lesions and recurrent blepharitis misdiagnosed over several years. Dermoscopic examination revealed a high-density Demodex infestation on facial skin and eyelashes, leading to a definitive diagnosis. A combined treatment approach using topical and systemic metronidazole, along with targeted ocular therapy, achieved complete remission. This case highlights the diagnostic power of dermoscopy and underscores the importance of considering demodicosis in chi…

Dermatophytes are rarely taken into account among the causes of blepharitis. In our report, we describe a 69-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman with chronic blepharitis for 10 years and 4 years respectively, in whom we examined the scales and pulled eyelashes on direct microscopy and isolated Microsporum audouinii and Trichophyton verrrucosum in the culture. We emphasise that dermatophytes may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of chronic blepharitis. In chronic, treatment resistance blepharitis fungal infections may be considered as possible cause.

We report a male patient with retinitis pigmentosa, growth failure, long eyelashes, and sparse hair, which are typical signs of Oliver-McFarlane syndrome. The patient was born to healthy parents and developed night blindness at 2 years of age. Retinitis pigmentosa was diagnosed when he was 5 years old. To date, only 11 cases of Oliver-McFarlane syndrome have been documented, with the present case being the 12th overall and the first in China. Thus, the existence of typical Oliver-McFarlane syndrome in Asians was verified.

5-Bromodeoxyuridine (BUDR), a halopyrimidine thymidine analogue, is incorporated into the DNA of dividing cells and causes photoradiosensitization. Twenty-five patients with malignant astrocytomas were treated with continuous intracarotid BUDR radiosensitization and radiotherapy for 8 1/2 weeks. Unique dose-limiting mucocutaneous complications were encountered. Ipsilateral facial dermatitis with epilation of eyebrows and eyelashes, ocular irritation, and bilateral nail dystrophy developed in all patients. Less common reactions included oral ulceration in six patients, body exanthem on the trun…

Three cases of distal duplication 14q are presented. The first two cases are cousins in a kindred segregating a balanced translocation t(14;18)(q31;q23). The third case resulted from a maternal translocation t(14;18)(q24;p11). By review of these cases and those previously reported, a distal duplication 14q syndrome is further delineated. Common features include postnatal growth retardation, mental retardation, hypotonia, microcephaly, slanted palpebral fissures, ocular hypertelorism, sparse eyelashes and eyebrows, nasal dysmorphism, tented lip, micrognathia, posteriorly rotated ears, and minor…

Blepharitis is a common ocular disease, characterized by redness and itchy eyelid margin. Demodex ectoparasite mite infestation is an underreported cause of blepharitis in urban setting. Purpose of this study was to estimate proportion of individuals with blepharitis showing evidence of Demodex mite infestation. Overall, 20 individuals with blepharitis and collarettes showed presence of Demodex mite on light microscopy. The study emphasizes the importance of light microscopic examination of epilated eyelash for timely diagnosis of Demodex infestation.

Phthiriasis palpebrarum, also known as crab lice, is a rare eyelash infestation by Pthirus pubis that is often misdiagnosed as common blepharitis, and thus mistreated. Treatment of Phthiriasis palpebrarum is widely variable. Tea tree oil is an essential oil with broad-spectrum anti-microbial therapeutic effects. Notably, however, the role of this agent in Phthiriasis palpebrarum management is unclear. The current article reports a case of phthiriasis palpebrarum effectively treated with tea tree oil.

7q11.23 duplication syndrome is a disease caused by duplication of a region of chromosome 7 comprising 26 genes. The first case described in the literature was reported by Somerville et al. in 2005, who described a patient with dolichocephaly, high and narrow forehead, long eyelashes, high and wide nose, short philtrum, high arched palate, dental malocclusion, retrognathia, and severe language delay. We report the case of a Colombian patient with 7q11.23 duplication by comparative genomic hybridization techniques, and classical clinical findings, this being the first reported case in Colombia …

Alopecia areata or hair loss occurs in one in 1000 people. If medical reasons for the hair loss are ruled out, opinion and hypothesis point towards autoimmunity and stress as possible causes. Dealing with the gradual or sudden loss of head hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, nasal, ear and body hair poses unique challenges for those it affects. Autoimmune-associated alopecia areata has no age boundaries and affects children, men and women equally. The dramatic change in appearance can result in psychological trauma, loss in confidence, bullying, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties.

Mutation of the transcription factor FOXC2 gene has been identified as the cause of lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LD). Subjects with LD usually present with lower extremity lymphedema and distichiasis--an additional row of eyelashes. Typically, lymphscintigrams of patients with LD show good transport of the radiotracer from the feet to the inguinal lymph nodes accompanied by reflux of tracer to the skin of the lower extremities ("dermal backflow"). We have examined two patients with LD syndrome and were able to demonstrate two different distinct lymphscintigraphic patterns: lymphatic hyper…

Ectodermal dysplasias are a large and heterogeneous groups of clinically and genetically distinct syndromes. We studied a family suffering from dystrophies of the distal part of the nails and trichodysplasia. Scalp, beard, pubic and axillary hair were broken off leaving a stubble 1-10 mm in length. Eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair were completely absent. Serum levels of copper and plasma levels of amino acids were within the normal range. Inheritance was autosomal recessive. Previous reports of ectodermal dysplasias and other complex syndromes with pili torti are reviewed.

Somatopsychic disturbances encompassing both ophthalmologic as well as child-psychiatric phenomena mainly occur in ADD: Central disorders of eye motoricity (strabismus) and disorders of visual perception are encountered. Dyslexia or dysorthography often occur as secondary phenomena. The psychosomatic or psychogenic disturbances affect not only the lid mechanism but also visualization. In the lid region, nictation tics and trichotillomania of the eyebrows and eyelashes occur. Psychic impairment of vision may range from a slight amblyopia, often associated with limitation of the field of vision,…

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis is a common parasitic infestation, whereas phthiriasis palpebrarum is an uncommon infection due to Phthirus pubis (pubic lice) inoculating the eyelashes and surrounding tissues of the eye. Emergency physicians should recognize the causes of this uncommon disease. Cases of phthiriasis palpebrarum should trigger the clinician to consider the potential for child abuse when suspected or when social history dictates the risk for abuse.
OBJECTIVE: A case of a pediculosis capitis and phthiriasis palpebrarum coinfection in a 4-year-old girl is presented, which was susp…
