The ability to read emotions in the face of another person is an important social skill that can be impaired in subjects with traumatic brain injury (TBI). To determine the brain regions that modulate facial emotion recognition, we conducted a whole-brain analysis using a well-validated facial emotion recognition task and voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) in a large sample of patients with focal penetrating TBIs (pTBIs). Our results revealed that individuals with pTBI performed significantly worse than normal controls in recognizing unpleasant emotions. VLSM mapping results showed that

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the face can potentially lead to destruction of vital structures, with devastating sequelae to the patient. Facial fractures, especially of the midface, are often complicated by ocular injuries. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to better understand specific fracture patterns associated with ocular injuries, including visual impairment and blindness.
METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases from January of 2004 to April of 2010 were systematically reviewed to identify relevant studies. Only those that investigated facial f

OBJECTIVE: This study examined mental health needs, receptivity to psychosocial aftercare, and barriers to care among survivors of violence-related facial injuries.
METHODS: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 25 consecutively treated individuals at a hospital-based specialty outpatient clinic one month after a violence-related facial injury. To participate in the study, patients had to screen positive for an alcohol use disorder (AUD), major depression or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants were questioned about receptivity to an aftercare program and perceived barrier…

Nerve injury-induced neuronal death may occur after accidental trauma or nerve inflammation. Although the response to facial root avulsion has been examined in rodent models, there are conflicting results as to whether motoneuron (MN) death is mediated by apoptosis or necrosis. We examined the response of MNs and proximal nerves after facial nerve avulsion in adult mice. Following facial nerve avulsion in 4-5-week-old mice, we observed a progressive reduction of MNs such that by 4 weeks less than 10% of avulsed MNs remained compared with the control side. The profile of MN degeneration was dis

A 16 year old amateur soccer player sustained a minor head injury while contesting a ball in the air. He was unconscious for two minutes and remained "dizzy" for about an hour. After two days he developed a profound left lower motor neurone facial nerve palsy. He was found to have a complex fracture of the left petrous temporal bone, with fluid in the left middle ear and left mastoid. Treatment was conservative with oral steroids and oral co-amoxiclav and a left myringotomy to decompress his middle ear. The spectrum of aetiology, presentation, and prognosis for facial nerve injuries is discuss

A 40-year-old male presented with hemifacial spasm manifesting as paroxysmal spontaneous twitches in the left peribuccal region persisting for 3 months. The symptoms began 7 days after an accident, when a signboard hit his left mandibular angle. Physical examination showed no trauma-related change in his face, and no neurological abnormality except for the twitches. Magnetic resonance imaging also showed no abnormalities of the facial nerve and adjacent regions. Electrophysiological studies showed synkinesis, so hemifacial spasm caused by peripheral facial nerve injury was suspect- ed. The sym

Pressure garments are commonly used to prevent and control hypertrophic scar tissue. Complications are unusual, though in children with facial burns, pressure garments may lead to skeletal and dental deformities. Studies in adolescents and adults are sparse. We describe a 24-year-old woman who sustained facial burns. Prior to injury, the patient had undergone premolar extraction in preparation for orthodontic treatment. Her post-burn care consisted of application of a Jobst pressure garment. After 2 months treatment, severe deformation of the dental-alveolar structure was observed. This report

The chin bar of a motorcycle helmet protects the rider from facial and head injuries. To evaluate the protective performance of chin bars against head injuries from facial impacts, an explicit finite element method was used to simulate the Snell Memorial Foundation test and a proposed drop test. The maximum acceleration and Head Injury Criterion (HIC) were employed to assess the impact-absorbing capability of the chin bar. The results showed that the proposed approach should be more practical than the Snell test, and provided more information for improving the chin bar design to protect agains

Twenty-five patients with posttraumatic facial nerve palsy were studied. Partial recovery of function had occurred in 95% of these patients by 18 months after injury. At 5 months posttrauma, there was some recovery in 92.5% of those with a partial lesion compared with 10% of those with a complete lesion. This difference attains statistical significance. Complete recovery of nerve function had occurred by 10.5 months in 53.5% of the patients; in 62% of patients with a partial lesion, complete recovery had occurred by 4 months compared with 0% in those with a complete lesion. This difference als

Most head injuries are due to two basic mechanisms, contact or acceleration. On the other hand, static loading force makes another type of head injury, so called "crushing head injury". In this report, we discussed the mechanism of the crushing head injury and cranial nerve damage of our case. A 35-year-old male was admitted to our hospital suffering from a crushing head injury. In this accident, his head had been crushed between 1000-kg printing machine and truck bed on both temporal regions slowly. He remained fully conscious. On admission 25 minutes after the injury, he showed bilateral six

Signs of a fracture of the mandible and a submaxillary hematoma were present in a patient wounded by a bullet. Selective carotid arteriography by femoral catheterization revealed the presence of sectioning of the facial artery at its origin and underlying external carotid stenosis. Hemorrhagic complications or aneurysm formation could have occurred if the lesion had not been demonstrated. Though arteriography is not without risks, it is irreplaceable for investigating cervicofacial injuries when a vascular lesion is suspected.

BACKGROUND: Electrical facial burns are uncommon but devastating injuries that often combine skeletal and soft-tissue loss. Single-stage restoration of bone, lining, and cover remains challenging.
CLINICAL REPORT: A 27-year-old man presented with a left hemifacial composite defect after a high-voltage electrical burn. Reconstruction used virtual surgical planning (VSP) with a patient-specific polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) implant for skeletal contour and a chimeric anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap for coverage.
RESULTS: The procedure achieved stable implant fixation, complete flap survival, a

BACKGROUND: Many brain injury patients who appear unresponsive retain subtle, purposeful motor behaviors, signaling capacity for recovery. We hypothesized that low-amplitude movements precede larger-amplitude voluntary movements detectable by clinicians after acute brain injury. To test this hypothesis, we developed a novel, as far as we are aware, computer vision-based tool (SeeMe) that detects and quantifies low-amplitude facial movements in response to auditory commands.
METHODS: We enrolled 16 healthy volunteers and 37 comatose acute brain injury patients (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤8) aged 18-8

Early facial nerve reconstruction should be offered in every patient with oncological resections of the facial nerve due to the debilitating functional and psychosocial consequences of facial nerve palsy. Oncologic pathology or oncologic resection accounts for the second most common cause of facial nerve palsy. In the case of these acute injuries, selecting an adequate method for reconstruction to optimize functional and psychosocial well-being is paramount. Authors advocate consideration of the level of injury as a framework for approaching the viable options of reconstruction systematically.

BACKGROUND: Several treatments for traumatic facial paralysis have been reported, but the role of surgery is still controversial.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with head trauma due to a fall injury. A total body computed tomography (CT) scan showed a left frontal acute epidural hematoma associated with a left optic canal and petrous bone fractures with the disappearance of the light reflex. Hematoma removal and optic nerve decompression were performed immediately. The initial treatment was successful with complete recovery of consciousness and vision. The fa

BACKGROUND: Facial fractures can be accompanied by serious and life-threatening injuries such as cervical spine injury (CSI), which can lead to serious consequences if misdiagnosed.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the patterns of maxillofacial fractures and to explore the association between these fractures and cervical spine injuries (CSIs) in patients with a traumatic facial injury.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data of the subjects who were admitted to the King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) and had a maxillofacial fracture in the period from January 2017 through Decemb

By early 2020, the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) was spreading rapidly worldwide, and its effects proved devastating. In many critically ill patients afflicted with COVID-19, treatment often involves prolonged periods of proning that, along with other interventions, can lead to improved oxygenation. However, sustaining this position predisposed patients to increased complications. We present a case of an older patient with respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 who developed rapidly forming facial and knee wounds and a brachial plexus injury from proning. The pressure injuries were unre
