[Soft tissue myxoma of the face].

Myxoid tumors are a group of heterogeneous lesions with a voluminous myxoid matrix, which may affect any tissue in the body. The frequency of these tumors depends on their localization. On the face, the localization is most often osseous. In this case, they are odontogenic myxoma. Localization in facial soft tissues is very rare. These tumors are benign but with a high potential for local aggressiveness and recurrence. They must be treated surgically with radical exeresis and long-term follow-up.

Craniofacial surgery for removing tumors in advanced stages that invade the anterior skull base.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial surgery provides optimal exposure of the sinonasal cavity, epidural space, and intracranial anterior fossa compartments, facilitating oncologically en bloc radical resection from an oncological standpoint. This study represents the largest series of patients undergoing craniofacial surgery in Latin America published to date. This study aims to characterize the clinical profiles of patients undergoing craniofacial surgery and to describe the technical nuances of the combined subfrontal-transbasal and midfacial degloving approach, which we consider the most appropriate s

Intracranial malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare malignant soft-tissue sarcomas arising from peripheral nerves. Little data exist regarding MPNST originating intracranially. Here, we present a 7th/8th nerve complex MPNST, discuss the treatment strategy and patient outcome, and provide a comprehensive review of existing literature. METHODS: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PubMed and crossed references were queried, yielding 37 publications from 1952 to the present. Fifty-three cases of primary intracranial and extra-axi

An audit of parotid gland surgeries in Kano, Nigeria: A review of 34 cases.

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms both benign and malignant are the most common indications for parotidectomy. About 70%-80% of all salivary gland tumours are located in the parotid gland with up to 80% being benign. Parotidectomy is a common surgical procedure performed by the otorhinolaryngologist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. AIMS: This study aimed to document our experience on parotid gland surgeries, and occurrence of facial nerve palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of all patients that had parotidectomy between January 2014 and December 2018 were evaluated. Demographic, clinical and o

Orbital exenteration for secondary orbital tumors: a series of seven cases.

BACKGROUND: Exenteration is indicated in patients with malignant neoplasms of orbital contents. It entails the removal of the eyeball together with its extraocular muscles and other soft tissues. Exenterations can be classified into (1) total, (2) subtotal, and (3) supertotal exenteration. Retrospectively study, we reviewed 7 patients that had received exenteration/subtotal exenteration with spontaneous granulation/myocutaneous flap implantation or eyelid-sparing exenteration with myocutaneous flap. Primary lesions, histopathological examination results, treatments, and recurrences are discuss

Spontaneous Bilateral Facial Paralysis Secondary to Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Sudden onset, bilateral facial paralysis is a rare clinical entity, representing less than 2% of all diagnoses of facial nerve paralysis. The differential for these patients is necessarily broad and includes numerous etiologies. Metastatic breast carcinoma to the bilateral parotid glands is also exceedingly rare with only 2 reported case reports noted in the literature, neither of which demonstrated facial nerve paralysis. Here, we report the only known occurrence of a patient presenting with synchronous bilateral facial nerve paralysis secondary to metastatic breast carcinoma to the bilateral

Management of advanced sporadic endolymphatic sac tumours: a single-centre case series.

BACKGROUND: Endolymphatic sac tumours (ELSTs) are rare, locally aggressive neoplasms of the temporal bone that often present at an advanced stage due to their indolent clinical course. Complete surgical excision may be technically challenging when tumours involve the jugular foramen, cerebellopontine angle (CPA) or adjacent cranial nerves and may therefore be associated with significant neurological morbidity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate facial nerve and radiological outcomes following planned subtotal resection with selective use of adjuvant radiotherapy in patients presenting with advanced spora

Metachronous Skull Base Paraganglioma Surgical Management: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Paragangliomas (PGLs) are benign hypervascular tumors that can develop in head and neck at different locations, primarily in the carotid bifurcation, jugular bulb, tympanic plexus, and vagal ganglia.1 Different gene mutations have been linked to the familial inherited forms, which can represent approximately 30% of all PGLs.1,2 These are classified into 5 different clinical syndromes: PGL 1 to 5.1 These patients have increased risk for synchronous and metachronous lesions requiring an extensive work-up for hormone secretion and other associated neoplasms, as well as attentive follow-up for lif

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: the importance of correct histological diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid is an uncommon, aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is made after excluding metastasis from other sites in the head and neck or other primary malignancies of the parotid. METHODS: Tumor registry data from 1974 to 1994 were reviewed at three University of Louisville-affiliated hospitals. Of 370 parotid tumors, 40 (11%) were initially classified as squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid. Chart review and histological specimen re-examination were conducted to confirm diagnosis. RESULTS: Only 8 (2%) of the 370 case

Endoscopically guided midfacial degloving in infants for removal of congenital and acquired midfacial masses.

Midface degloving allows excellent exposure for a variety of congenital and acquired pediatric facial masses. The petite facial skeleton of the infant and child, however, can limit the utility of this dissection, thereby necessitating external approaches and altered cosmesis. Endoscopic assistance can aid in safe and complete removal of these masses without the need for external surgical approaches. In this series, five infants underwent midfacial degloving for midface lesions. Those masses that could not be adequately visualized underwent midfacial degloving with endoscopic assistance. Succes

Intratemporal facial nerve schwannomas: multicenter experience of 80 cases.

PURPOSE: To provide more data on the clinical presentation and natural evolution of facial nerve schwannomas and to provide guidance for therapeutic decision making. METHODS: A retrospective case review of eighty patients diagnosed with a facial nerve schwannoma between 1990 and 2018 in ten tertiary referral centers in Europe was performed. Patients' demographics, symptomatology, audiometry, anatomical site (segments involved), size and whenever possible volume measurement were registered. RESULTS: At presentation, transient or persistent facial palsy was the most common symptom, followed by

Melanocytic lesions of the face: diagnostic pitfalls.

The pathologist often has a difficult task in evaluating melanocytic lesions. For lesions involving the face the consequences of misdiagnosis are compounded for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons. In this article, the pathological features of common and uncommon benign and malignant melanocytic lesions are reviewed and pitfalls in their diagnosis are highlighted. Benign lesions resembling melanomas include regenerating naevus, "irritated" naevus, combined naevus, "ancient naevus", Spitz naevus, dysplastic naevus, halo naevus, variants of blue naevi, balloon and clear cell naevi, neurotised

Novel mouse model for simulating microsurgical tumor excision with facial nerve preservation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To determine the feasibility of using a mouse tumor model as a microsurgical training tool for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) trainees. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. METHODS: We injected athymic nude mice with human cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (A431 cell line) deep to the parotid region overlying the masseter muscle. We sacrificed the animals 1 to 3 weeks postinjection, once a visible tumor growth was confirmed. We then asked 10 OHNS trainees to excise the tumor with preservation of the facial nerves under a high-magnification dissecting microscope. Th
