The role of parental rearing practices and family demographics on oral health-related quality of life in children.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the direct and indirect (via oral health-related behaviour) effects of parental rearing practices on children's Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) within a family-focused, comprehensive predictive model. METHODS: Participants were 11- to 14-year-old children and their parents living in Telangana State, India (N = 1130). Children were clinically assessed for dental caries, gingivitis, oral hygiene status, fluorosis, and malocclusion, and completed a self-administered questionnaire on oral health-related behaviour and OHRQoL. Parents answered questions related

Association of human height-related genetic variants with familial short stature in Han Chinese in Taiwan.

Human height can be described as a classical and inherited trait model. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed susceptible loci and provided insights into the polygenic nature of human height. Familial short stature (FSS) represents a suitable trait for investigating short stature genetics because disease associations with short stature have been ruled out in this case. In addition, FSS is caused only by genetically inherited factors. In this study, we explored the correlations of FSS risk with the genetic loci associated with human height in previous GWAS, alone and cumulatively

Refined phenotyping identifies links between preeclampsia and related diseases in a Norwegian preeclampsia family cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is a complex genetic disease of pregnancy with a heterogenous presentation, unknown cause and potential severe outcomes for both mother and child. Preeclamptic women have increased risk for atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease. We aimed to identify heritabilities and phenotypic correlations of preeclampsia and related conditions in the Norwegian Preeclampsia Family Biobank. METHODS: By applying a variance components model, a total of 493 individuals (from 138 families with increased occurrence of preeclampsia) were classified according to 30 disease-related phenotyp

Family related factors associated with caries prevalence in the primary dentition of five-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: Habits formed in childhood dictate lifestyle choices made as adults. These encompass both oral hygiene and dietary habits which in turn affect dental caries status. Children largely acquire these habits from modeling/observing parents and other family members. AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the caries status of 5-year-olds, and evaluate associations between dental caries and family-related factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 400 children were examined for dental caries using the WHO criteria. Parents were interviewed using a self-structured questionnaire to

Age-related incidence and family history in frontotemporal dementia: data from the Swedish Dementia Registry.

OBJECTIVES: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is considered to be a mainly early-onset neurodegenerative disorder with a strong hereditary component. The aim of the study was to investigate age-related incidence and family history in FTD compared to other dementia disorders, especially Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: The Swedish Dementia Registry (SveDem) registers all new cases of dementia diagnosed by the participating centres, including data on demographics, diagnosis, and investigations used. Data for the period 2008-2011 were extracted and compared with age-related population data on a re

Mammographic density and breast cancer: a comparison of related and unrelated controls in the Breast Cancer Family Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Percent mammographic density (PMD) is a strong and highly heritable risk factor for breast cancer. Studies of the role of PMD in familial breast cancer may require controls, such as the sisters of cases, selected from the same 'risk set' as the cases. The use of sister controls would allow control for factors that have been shown to influence risk of breast cancer such as race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status and a family history of breast cancer, but may introduce 'overmatching' and attenuate case-control differences in PMD. METHODS: To examine the potential effects of using sis

A French family with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease related to simultaneous heterozygous MFN2 and GDAP1 mutations.

Either dominantly inherited mutations in MFN2 encoding mitofusin 2 or GDAP1 encoding ganglioside-induced differentiation associated protein 1 may be associated with mild neuropathy. The proband, a 41-year-old woman, and her daughter present a severe axonal form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. Both are heterozygous for the well-described mild variant p.R120W in GDAP1, which was transmitted by the pauci symptomatic proband's mother. Given that they had an early onset in the first decade and delayed walking acquisition, the other genes implicated in axonal forms of CMT disease were analyzed

Molecular characterization of three new mutations causing C5 deficiency in two non-related families.

Deficiencies in complement components are rare diseases whose diagnosis is often underestimated. In addition, in only a few cases molecular studies have been carried out for the characterization of the underlying genetic defects. To date, studies involving C5-deficient patients are scarce. The aim of the present report is to characterize the biochemical and molecular complement deficiency in two non-related families with one or more members showing no detectable hemolytic complement activity (CH50<50 U/ml) and reporting a history of several episodes of meningitis. Protein deficiency was assess

Population-based estimates of the relation between breast cancer risk, tumor subtype, and family history.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies that have estimated the breast cancer risk attributable to family history have been based on data collected within family units. Use of this study design has likely overestimated risks for the general population. We provide population-based estimates of breast cancer risk and different tumor subtypes in relation to the degree, number, and age at diagnosis of affected relatives. METHODS: Cox Proportional Hazards to calculate risks (hazard ratios; 95% confidence interval) of breast cancer and tumor subtypes for women with a family history of breast cancer relative to wom

A Drosophila protein family implicated in pheromone perception is related to Tay-Sachs GM2-activator protein.

Low volatility, lipid-like cuticular hydrocarbon pheromones produced by Drosophila melanogaster females play an essential role in triggering and modulating mating behavior, but the chemosensory mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Recently, we showed that the CheB42a protein, which is expressed in only 10 pheromone-sensing taste hairs on the front legs of males, modulates progression to late stages of male courtship behavior in response to female-specific cuticular hydrocarbons. Here we report that expression of all 12 genes in the CheB gene family is predominantly or exclusively gust
