OBJECTIVE: While ample research exists about mother-child attachment, so far little focus has been on specifics of father-child attachment. Even less research is available on the nature of the father-child relationship for children born preterm. The objective of this study was to determine whether children born preterm (23 to 37 weeks gestation) differ in their attachment to their fathers and mothers from their term peers (> 37 weeks gestation), and whether specific child characteristics, such as gender, twin status, and developmental status, have an influence on the parent-child relationship.…

OBJECTIVE: Postnatal depression in women is associated with adverse effects on both maternal health and children's development. It is unclear whether depression in men at this time poses comparable risks. The present study set out to assess the association between depression in men in the postnatal period and later psychiatric disorders in their children and to investigate predisposing factors for depression in men following childbirth.
METHOD: A population-based cohort of 10,975 fathers and their children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) was recruited in the

There were a father and a son, Michael and Sören Kierkegaard, both highly talented, imaginitive, witty, humorous, especially interested in shrewd dialectrical dialogues respectively debates, both profound melancholy ponderers. But according to very own individuality their congeniality wasn't absolute. The father, being under a questionable rigorous opinion of sin, suffered from undeserved divine grace since early childhood. And Michael Kierkegaard made Sören anxious with the religious experience of original sin. This anxiety moved (touched or affected) the sensitive son mighty. Nevertheless he

OBJECTIVE: Children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) have a greater risk of dental caries. The parents' knowledge and attitudes may have an impact on their children's oral health and dietary habits. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the socio-demographic characteristics, oral health knowledge, oral health behaviours, and habits of the parents in addition to the relationship with the oral health and dietary practices of their children with CLP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The parents of 343 patients with CLP participated in the study. An online questionnaire with 52 questions regarding s

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between family characteristics and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which we studied for the first time in German children.
METHODS: ALL cases were diagnosed between 1992 and 1994 and information on family characteristics was collected during a previously conducted nationwide case-control study. Children were followed for 10 years after diagnosis, as few disease-related events occur afterwards. Cox proportional hazards models estimating hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using overall as well as event-free survival

Diagnosing a child by newborn screening with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (CAH) causes multiple challenges for the affected parents and the whole family. We aimed to examine the health-related Quality of Life (HrQoL), coping, and needs of parents caring for a child with CAH to develop demand-responsive interventions for improving the psychosocial situation of affected families. In a retrospective cross-sectional design, we assessed HrQoL, coping patterns, and the needs of parents caring for a CAH-diagnosed child using specific questionnaires. Data of

Links between parental personality, parenting, and adolescent behavior have been well established. However, extant research is limited by the sole focus on parental Big Five personality, and not taking home and family context into account. These gaps were addressed in two studies. In study 1, context, parental personality, and their interactions were examined as predictors of parenting in separate mother and father models (parents only). In study 2, context, parental personality, and parenting were examined as predictors of adolescent behavioral outcomes (parent-adolescent dyads). Parents (N =

Recent surveys of lesbians have revealed that one-third have been heterosexually married, and one-half of these have had children. Studies comparing lesbian mothers and their children with divorced heterosexual mothers and their children provide data of value to clinicians preparing to evaluate or treat members of this population. Studies show similarities between the two groups in marital history, pregnancy history, child-rearing attitudes, and lifestyle. Motherhood, not sexual orientation, is the most salient factor in both group's identity. Lesbian mothers had more congenial relations with

BACKGROUND: Father-infant bonding is a critical component of early child development, influencing children's emotional, cognitive, and social outcomes, but may be disrupted by paternal depression and family dynamics. Replicating a pre-pandemic Stockholm-based study, the current study examines i) the extent to which fathers' depression symptoms and the quality of the coparenting relationship are associated with father-infant bonding and ii) whether these two variables serve as mediators in the relationship with bonding during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.
METHODS: This study employed a cros

Fathers and/or non-birthing partners are now actively involved in child-rearing globally; however some experience emotional difficulties during the perinatal period. With the birth of a preterm infant, parents experience additional stress beyond that normally engendered by having a baby, which can impact on parent-infant relationship and infant development. In Australia, there is limited evidence on fathers' experiences of preterm birth. Thus, this study aimed to explore the experiences of Australian fathers of preterm infants including their emotional and physical wellbeing when they have a p

The present paper focuses its attention on the personality disorders among relatively old dyslexic children whose symptom persists beyong logopedic reeducations of a long duration. The degree of disorientation of our subjects runs parallel to the degree of fragmentation of personality. In the Rorschach and TAT tests, the image of the Self is ill-differenciated from a poorly structured maternal image and pleads for a primary defect of the mother-child relation at a preobjectal level. The paternal function is obvious but ill-invested, therefore the relationship between severe and persisting dysl

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic irradiation of the mother during pregnancy increases the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). There is inconsistent evidence on associations between ALL and other parental or childhood diagnostic irradiation. The aim of this analysis is to investigate whether diagnostic X-rays of the mother before birth, of the father before conception, or of the child increased the risk of childhood ALL.
METHODS: Data from 389 cases and 876 frequency-matched controls were analyzed using unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for study matching factors and potenti

This paper examines the effects of three different types of father absence on the timing of life history events among women in rural Bangladesh. Age at marriage and age at first birth are compared across women who experienced different father presence/absence conditions as children. Survival analyses show that daughters of fathers who divorced their mothers or deserted their families have consistently younger ages at marriage and first birth than other women. In contrast, daughters whose fathers were labor migrants have consistently older ages at marriage and first birth. Daughters whose fathe

This case report describes the psychosexual development of a child with true hermaphroditism who was assigned to the male sex at birth, but reassigned to the female sex at age two months. Given this child's excessive exposure to male sex hormone in utero, relative to physically normal females, one would predict a biological predisposition to behave in a masculine manner. This has occurred since two years of age. In addition, this child has had periodic episodes of gender disturbance, dysphoria, and ambivalence. In contrast, a physically normal fraternal twin sister has been conventionally femi

OBJECTIVE: Six studies (N = 1,081 general population parents) assessed the validity of the Voodoo Doll Task (VDT) as a proxy for aggressive parenting behaviors.
METHODS: Participants were given an opportunity to symbolically inflict harm by choosing to stick "pins" into a doll representing their child.
RESULTS: Individual differences in parents' trait aggression (Studies 1, 2, and 6), state hostility (Study 3), attitudes towards the corporal punishment of children (Study 4), self-control (Study 6), depression (Study 6), and child physical abuse risk (Study 6) were associated with increased p
