Geospatial variation of bottle feeding practice among children aged 0-23 months in East Africa: Geographically weighted regression analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bottle-feeding a baby aged 0-23 months is the act of giving any liquid or semi-solid food from a bottle with a nipple. Bottle feeding can increase their risk of excessive weight gain, malnutrition, iron deficiency, and reduced birth spacing. However, no study has been conducted on geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis and the factors associated with bottle-feeding practice. OBJECTIVE: To assess the geospatial variation and determinants of bottle-feeding practice among children aged 0-23 months in East Africa using GWR. METHODS: A total sample of 28,562 children aged

Comparison of Paladai Cup Against Nifty Cup Feeding in Preterm Low-Birth-Weight Infants: An Open-Labeled Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Neonatal Intuitive Feeding Technology (NIFTY) cup feeding has been found to be feasible in preterm low-birth-weight babies. However, literature on direct comparison of the same with paladai feeding is lacking. Methods: In this open-labeled, randomized controlled trial, preterm infants (<34 weeks/<1800 g) on full oral gastric tube feeding for at least 3 consecutive days, eligible to be given a trial of suck and swallow cup feeding, prior to initiation of direct breastfeeding, were randomized to the two feeding intervention groups: paladai cup and Nifty cup. The primary outcome was t

Neonatal enteral feeding tubes as loci for colonisation by members of the Enterobacteriaceae.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine whether neonatal nasogastric enteral feeding tubes are colonised by the opportunistic pathogen Cronobacter spp. (Enterobacter sakazakii) and other Enterobacteriaceae, and whether their presence was influenced by the feeding regime. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine tubes were collected from two neonatal intensive care units (NICU). A questionnaire on feeding regime was completed with each sample. Enterobacteriaceae present in the tubes were identified using conventional and molecular methods, and their antibiograms determined. RESUL

The Right to Food for Children With Cerebral Palsy in South Africa: Examining Nutritional Access and Structural Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at increased risk of malnutrition due to feeding difficulties, higher nutritional requirements and the additional caregiving demands associated with disability. Households caring for children with CP may therefore experience greater vulnerability to food insecurity, particularly in low-resource contexts. This study explored how children with CP experience feeding and nutrition within the South African food environment. METHODS: An explanatory mixed-methods pilot study was conducted with primary caregivers of children aged 2-8 years with CP in

Bedside enteral feeding tube placement into duodenum and jejunum.

A bedside method for placement of nasoenteric feeding tubes is described utilizing gravity and corkscrewing of the feeding tube to pass the pylorus and then air injection to verify position of the tube from the location and character of transmitted sounds to the stethoscope. Twenty-eight of 31 consecutive patients requiring enteral feeding had tubes successfully placed past the pylorus using this method, 25 on the first attempt and three on the second. This method is an effective and inexpensive alternative to endoscopic or fluoroscopic feeding tube placement.

Exploring influences on infant-feeding decisions among mothers with learning disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: During the transition to motherhood, women need to make decisions about infant-feeding. For women with learning disabilities, making such decisions is impacted by their capacity to interpret information. Understanding the influences on infant-feeding decisions can improve support for mothers with learning disabilities. AIM: Our review explores broad intersecting influences, including autonomy, formal and informal support systems, and information delivery, by synthesising both peer-reviewed and grey literature. It aimed to understand these aspects in relation to infant-feeding deci

Effect of oral colostrum application every 2 hours and 4 hours in order to achieve trophic feeding in preterm infants: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Enteral feeding in preterm neonates starts with trophic feeding, which is the practice of feeding minute volumes of enteral fe … 47 day faster than the colostrum application every 2 hours. However, the difference between the two feeding methods was not statistically significant (p=0.703). CONCLUSION: There is no significant difference in achieving trophic feeding in preterm neonates (less than 34 weeks) whether the colostrum was given every 2 or 4 hours.

Video-assisted placement of enteral feeding tubes using the Integrated Real-Time Imaging System (IRIS)-technology in critically ill patients.

INTRODUCTION: In critically ill patients, nasogastric (NG) and nasojejunal (NJ) feeding tube placements are standard procedures. However, about 1.9% of blind tube insertions are malpositioned in the tracheopulmonary system, whereas guided procedures may result in a significant delay in nutritional delivery. Guided methods, such as Cortrak and fluoroscopy, have success rates of 82.6-85% and 93% respectively. The current study aims to investigate the performance of video-assisted feeding tube placement in the post-pyloric position using Integrated Real Time Imaging System (IRIS-) technology. ME

Associations of toddler mechanical/distress feeding problems with psychopathology symptoms five years later.

BACKGROUND: Feeding problems are common in early childhood, and some evidence suggests that feeding problems may be associated with psychopathology. Few prospective studies have explored whether toddler feeding problems predict later psychopathology. METHODS: Mothers of 1,136 children from the Upstate KIDS cohort study provided data when children were 2.5 and 8 years of age. Food refusal (picky eating) and mechanical/distress feeding problems and developmental delays were assessed at 2.5 years. Child eating behaviors (enjoyment of food, food fussiness, and emotional under and overeating) and

Acute respiratory effect of transpyloric feeding for respiratory exacerbation in preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: Gastroesophageal reflux may exacerbate chronic lung disease in preterm infants. We evaluated the short-term effects of transpyloric feeding on respiratory status in preterm infants during mechanical ventilation. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from the hospital information management system. To evaluate the effect of transpyloric feeding on oxygenation, we compared changes in SpO2/FiO2 ratios before and after commencing transpyloric feeding by a piecewise linear regression model. RESULTS: We examined 33 infants (median gestational age, 25.4 weeks; median birth weight,

Endoclips for fixation of nasoenteral feeding tubes: a review.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining the position of an endoscopically placed nasoenteral feeding tube beyond the pylorus is often problematic because of retrograde migration. Fixation of a feeding tube to the small intestinal wall with an endoclip may prevent this. This article reviews available literature on the feasibility, efficacy and safety of endoclips for fixation of nasoenteral feeding tubes. METHODS: A systematic search of the English literature was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases to identify articles assessing the use of endoclips for fixation of feeding tubes, as well as

Early postoperative oral feeding accelerates upper gastrointestinal anastomotic healing in the rat model.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of early postoperative oral feeding following colonic anastomosis have previously been demonstrated. However, early postoperative oral feeding in patients with upper gastrointestinal surgery has been avoided because of concerns regarding anastomotic leakage. We investigated whether early postoperative oral feeding was advantageous for upper gastrointestinal anastomosis in comparison to parenteral feeding with a fasting period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to the same surgical manipulation, i.e., venous catheterization, gastrostomy, an
