Fetal and postnatal bone development: reviewing the role of mechanical stimuli and nutrition.

Fetal and postnatal bone development is by tradition viewed as a process of bone mineral accretion or an increase in bone mass. Accordingly, previous approaches to bone development in neonatology and early childhood have emphasized the determinants of peak bone mass and their relationship to osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures in later life. This suggests that the neonatal period and early childhood is an important period for bone mineral accrual, and that peak bone mass may be correlated with subsequent skeletal health. Nevertheless, describing fetal and postnatal bone development just in

In utero physiology: role of folic acid in nutrient delivery and fetal development.

Despite the isolation of placental folate receptors 25 y ago and progress in defining the mechanism of folate delivery, considerable gaps re … ctive performance, implantation, and fetal growth and other subtler (microscopic) defects in murine fetal development. Longitudinal follow-up showed that gestational folate deficiency results in behavioral changes-an anxiety phenotype-during adulthood in these mice, which supports the Barker hypothesis. The extent to which these findings are relevant to humans is u …

Sonic hedgehog expression in the development of hindgut in ETU-exposed fetal rats.

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) has been shown to be involved in the morphogenesis of many organ systems including the notochord, floor plate and limbs, as well as in the development of the left-right axis in vertebrates. Recent evidence suggests the Shh cascade plays a crucial role in the development of the foregut and hindgut. We have previously shown that prenatal exposure of fetal rats to ethylenethiourea (ETU) induces hindgut malformations and other abnormalities of the VACTERL association. The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of expression of Shh and its downstream genes during hindgu

Prenatal development of gastrointestinal function in the pig and the effects of fetal esophageal obstruction.

Maturation of the fetal gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is influenced by both luminal stimuli (e.g. swallowed fluid) and hormonal factors (e.g. endogenous cortisol release). The aims of the present study were 1) to investigate GIT growth and maturation during the last 20% of gestation in pigs (term = 114 +/- 2 d), and 2) to investigate the effect of esophageal ligation, to prevent fetal swallowing, at 80% to 91% gestation. In normal fetuses, marked increases occurred during late gestation in body weight (+95%), relative intestinal weight (+79%, g kg(-1) body weight), activity of some digestive en

Hormonal modulation of fetal pulmonary development: relevance for the fetus with diaphragmatic hernia.

Antenatal hormonal modulation of pulmonary growth has been successfully introduced in clinical practice to reduce the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of preterm born infants. However, a certain amount of reserve to repeat courses should be taken into account because of possible adverse effects of antenatal administration of glucocorticoids. Although in experimental animals thyroid hormones given alone were not shown to have stimulatory effects on pulmonary development, there was an apparent synergistic effect with corticosteroids. Yet, such effects have not been substantiated

Esx1 is an X-chromosome-imprinted regulator of placental development and fetal growth.

In marsupials and mice, the paternally derived X chromosome is preferentially inactivated in the placental tissues of female embryos. We show here that the X-linked homeobox gene Esx1 (refs 5,6), whose expression is restricted to extraembryonic tissues, is a chromosomally imprinted regulator of placental morphogenesis and trophoblast differentiation. Heterozygous female mice that inherited a mutant Esx1 allele from their father developed normally. Heterozygous females that inherited the Esx1 mutation from their mother, however, were born 20% smaller than normal and are identical in phenotype t

The development of diurnal rhythmicity in fetal suprachiasmatic neurons as demonstrated by fos immunohistochemistry.

Using Fos immunohistochemistry as a marker of cellular activity, we have shown that neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of fetal sheep are active by 75 days gestation. From at least 90 days gestation (term is 146 days), these neurons are more active during the day (12.00) than at night (03.00) when pregnant ewes are exposed to a 12-h light-dark cycle with lights on at 07.00. The day-night difference in Fos immunoreactivity persisted when the lighting schedule was extended by 8 h to 03.00, although neurons were now more active at 03.00 than they were in fetuses maintained on the normal light

Fetal pancreatic antigens in the Syrian golden hamster and their relationship to development and carcinogenesis.

A rabbit antiserum raised against pancreatic extracts of newborn Syrian hamsters was used in a histological study of pancreas development. This antiserum, after being rendered specific by appropriate absorption, stained the cytoplasm of acinar cells in neonatal pancreas. The reaction was observed from the 13th day of gestation (3 days before delivery) until the 10th day after birth. This period was characterized by a progressive maturation of the endocrine pancreas. The disappearance of fetal pancreatic antigens coincided with the appearance of Langerhans islets. Adult pancreas was not stained

Vitamin A and retinol-binding protein metabolism during fetal development in the rat.

Studies were conducted on the metabolism and placental transport of vitamin A and plasma retinol-binding protein (RBP) during fetal development in the rat. Vitamin A accumulated in the conceptus in three phases: an early phase (days 7-9 of gestation) characterized by a high vitamin A concentration; a second phase (days 11-14) where vitamin A and RBP accumulated in parallel; and a third phase of continued vitamin A and RBP accumulation (days 16-20) in which vitamin A was stored in the fetal liver. The early phase of vitamin A accumulation may reflect a mechanism that exists to prepare the conce…

The effect of maternal and fetal corticosteroids on the development of function of the pituitary-adrenocortical system.

The pituitary-adrenocortical system of rat fetuses was stimulated (larger adrenals at birth) by maternal adrenalectomy, or suppressed (smaller adrenals at birth) by implantation of an ACTH secreting pituitary tumor (MtTF4). Offspring were delivered by caesarean section and fostered to untreated females. Offspring of intact females delivered by caesarean section and normally delivered offspring of intact mothers both fostered to untreated lactating females served as controls. Body growth in the first three weeks of life was delayed in offspring of tumor bearing mothers in Control-fostered subje

The Role of Prenatal Care in Fetal and Infant Development in Brazil: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: In Brazil, nearly universal access to prenatal care coexists with ongoing negative fetal and infant outcomes. This review explores how the adequacy of prenatal care affects maternal, fetal, and child health, and highlights recurring gaps in service delivery. Methods: A narrative review of Brazilian studies published between 2018 and 2024 was conducted through the Virtual Health Library and PubMed. The initial search (July 2024) was updated in February 2025, and two reviewers independently screened and extracted data, synthesizing clinical outcomes from the findings. Resu

Melanoma in Pregnancy-Diagnosis, Treatment, and Consequences for Fetal Development and the Maintenance of Pregnancy.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is one of the most common neoplasms among pregnancy-associated cancers (PACs). Risk factors include excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the presence of benign and dysplastic nevi, and a patient or family history of melanoma. Self-examination and careful inspection of nevi are crucial, especially in the context of their progression over time. Physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, such as the darkening and enlargement of the nevi, delay the diagnosis of CMM. In the fetus, metastases are very rare, and if they do occur, they concern the placenta

Impact of Intrauterine Insults on Fetal and Postnatal Cerebellar Development in Humans and Rodents.

Many children suffer from neurodevelopmental aberrations that have long-term effects. To understand the consequences of pathological processes during particular periods in neurodevelopment, one has to understand the differences in the developmental timelines of brain regions. The cerebellum is one of the first brain structures to differentiate during development but one of the last to achieve maturity. This relatively long period of development underscores its vulnerability to detrimental environmental exposures throughout gestation. Moreover, as postnatal functionality of the cerebellum is mu
