Cemento-ossifying fibroma of jaws-correlation of clinical and pathological findings.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) belongs to the group of bone-related lesions of the oral cavity. The aim of this study was refine its histologic features and to correlate histopathological picture and clinical behavior of the tumor. The quantity of bone spherules, their cellularity, the existence of hemorrhage, inflammation, and endochondral ossification in the stroma of the tumor were analyzed and correlated with patients main symptoms of ten patients with COF. All patients had swelling that lasted between 3 and 20 months (mean 10.4 months). Other clinical symptoms were facial asymmetry, eye …

Peripheral ossifying fibroma in the oral cavity: CT and MR findings.

We report a case of peripheral ossifying fibroma arising from the anterior oral cavity in a 12-year-old boy. CT and MR scans showed a large exophytic soft tissue mass overlying the anterior hard palate and maxillary alveolar ridge. The tumour revealed peripheral calcification without adjacent bone changes.

Ovarian fibroma in the era of laparoscopic surgery: a general surgeon's experience.

The ovarian fibroma is a rare benign tumor originating from the connective tissue of the ovarian cortex. On occasion, the general surgeon may encounter ovarian fibroma while operating an acute abdomen. We present a series of 15 ovarian fibromas encountered in 13 patients over 11 years experience in our general surgical ward. Only four cases required emergency operations due to either tumors or adnexal torsion. High-resolution ultrasound scan with color Doppler suggested an ovarian fibroma in only ten cases, while CT and MRI were suggestive for the diagnosis in three other cases. Surgical treat…

A case of isolated ossifying fibroma of the mastoid cavity of the temporal bones.

OBJECTIVES: To describe an isolated ossifying fibroma of the mastoid cavity that did not invade the inner ear and middle ear cavity. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Department of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine, Pusan National University, a tertiary care center in Busan, South Korea. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION: A 34-year-old woman had an episode of acute right ear otalgia. A computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging scan showed a well-circumscribed, lobulated, 3 x 3 x 3-cm sized tumor mass that was localized to the temporal bone with bony erosion including tegmen mastoi…

Excision and repair of the peripheral ossifying fibroma: a report of 3 cases.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), one of the most common gingival lesions, has a recurrence rate of nearly 20%. To minimize the reappearance of this lesion, it must be completely excised. In the maxillary anterior region, total excision of a POF can result in an unsightly gingival defect. METHODS: Three cases are presented in which a POF was excised from the gingiva facial to a maxillary central incisor. One of these lesions had previously undergone 2 cycles of conservative excision and recurrence. In all cases, the lesions were excised down to bone. Each of the resulting gi…

Localized Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome with prominent perivascular fibromas.

The autosomal dominant Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome is a cutaneo-intestinal condition that manifests on the skin in the form of multiple, skin-co … ll-demarcated fibrosis in the region of cutaneous blood vessel proliferations. Because perivascular fibromas have already been observed in other patients with Birt-Hogg-Dubé-syndrome, the perivascular fibroma, with fibrofolliculoma and trichodiscoma, must be included within this syndrome's spectrum of skin changes.

[The percutaneous treatment of uterine fibromas by means of transcatheter arterial embolization].

INTRODUCTION: We report our preliminary experience with arterial embolization of uterine fibroids in seven women, focusing on the technical aspects of the procedure and the clinical and morphological results during the follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS: February to December 1999 seven women (mean age 47) underwent transcatheter arterial embolization of both uterine arteries as a permanent treatment for fibroids. We included in this study single or multiple, bleeding and/or large fibroids, symptomatic on compression, contraindicated for myomectomy because of high surgical or anesthesiologic risk

Trichoblastic fibroma. A case report and an immunohistochemical study of cytokeratin expression.

A 47-year-old woman noticed a nodule on her right shoulder that had been gradually increasing in size without symptoms. Histologic features … lly found in connection with the lobules. The histologic findings were interpreted as trichoblastic fibroma. Immunohistochemical studies with antibodies directed against cytokeratins (CK) and involucrin revealed positive staining in most of the tumor cells with RCK102 and 34 beta E12 antikeratin antibodies, whereas the epithelial cords and the peripheral …

Central cementoossifying fibroma of the maxillary sinus: a review of six cases.

We present the radiographic findings of six patients with central cementoossifying fibromas of the maxilla. CT typically demonstrated large, spherical tumors in the maxillary alveolar ridge, filling and expanding the maxillary sinus and extending to involve the ipsilateral hard palate. The central tumors ranged from having soft-tissue density with scattered foci of high density to being heavily calcified.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the femur: a case report with intra-cortical location.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is the least common benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 0.5 to 1% of all skeletal neoplasms. This subject was a 16-year-old female with a three-year history of pain involving the distal femoral metaphysis. This case showed an unusual feature: it was intracortical in location. Radiologic differential diagnosis included metaphyseal fibrous defect, periosteal chondroma, simple or aneurysmal bone cyst, and cortical abscess. On operation, the lesion filled the intracortical defect with whitish myxoid soft tissue, bulging into the adjacent soft tissue. Micros…

Ossifying fibroma of sphenoid bone with coexistent mucocele: CT and MRI.

A case of a 26-year-old woman with decreasing vision in her right eye, diplopia, headache, and galactorrhea is presented. Both CT and MR stu … enhance but had an intensely enhancing, uniformly thin rim. The pathologic diagnosis was ossifying fibroma with a sphenoid sinus mucocele. There are only isolated reports in the literature of benign fibrosseous lesions causing mucoceles. This association is reviewed as are the findings in this case.

Case report 695: Cementifying fibroma of the proximal end of the tibia.

A case of a cementifying fibroma in the proximal end of the tibia in a 31-year-old woman is presented. The lesion was expanding but well-defined with amorphous central calcification. The unique, calcified, cementum-like particles in a fibrous stroma have been reported in only four previous cases in long bones. The histological and radiographic differences between a cementifying fibroma, bone cysts with cementum, and a true cementoma are discussed. The radiological differential diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia, giant cell tumor, and low grade central osteosarcoma was considered.

[Massive fibroma of the round ligament developing as an extraperitoneal abdominal mass].

The authors report the exceptionally rare case of a huge myofibroma of the round ligament. The localization of the myoma was very unusual. It developed from the inguinal insertion of the round ligament; and the fibroma had grown in the abdominal wall between muscle and the peritoneum. Consequently the mass was both abdominal and extra-peritoneal. To our knowledge, such an association has never before been described. In the case described here, the mass was asymptomatic and the patient presented because of her increasing abdominal size. Examination revealed an abdominal mass that almost reached…

Management of a Rare Digital Dermocutaneous Fibroma of the Flexor Tendon Sheath.

We present the case of a 19-year-old gentleman with a rare digital dermocutaneous fibroma of the tendon sheath (FTS). The dermocutaneous and flexor sheath involvement of this mass presented unique challenges to wide excision and definitive soft tissue defect coverage. Fibroma of the tendon sheath is a benign lesion with a recurrence rate of up to 24%, giving it an aggressive profile. Previous reports of digital FTS are limited to subcutaneous involvement managed with simple excision and closure. To date, this is the first report of the successful treatment of a digital dermocutaneous FTS with …
