Childhood maltreatment predicts daily stressor exposure in college students but not perceived stress or stress reactivity.

The purpose of this observational longitudinal study was to investigate the role of childhood maltreatment in explaining individual differences in daily stress processes. College students (N = 253) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and a measure of neuroticism at baseline before completing 14 nightly surveys assessing exposure to daily stressors (particularly interpersonal stressors), perceived stressor severity, and negative affect. Given mixed findings in past research, no specific hypotheses were proffered. Generalized linear mixed modeling showed that students with a history of

Family stressors in traumatic brain injury: a two-year follow-up.

A review of the literature suggests that psychosocial disability in traumatic brain-injured (TBI) individuals and distress in families continues long after the initial injury. In this study the relationship of family stress to a number of factors was studied longitudinally. Caregivers of 51 TBI inpatients were interviewed at rehabilitation admission and by phone at 6, 12, and 24 months postinjury. Caregivers' most common complaints about their relatives were a lack of involvement in leisure activities, fatigue, slowness, and forgetfulness. Increasingly severe temper outbursts, anxiety, and sel

Understanding Chinese American Adolescents' Developmental Outcomes: Insights From the Family Stress Model.

In this brief report, we investigated whether the Family Stress Model could be replicated with a sample of Chinese American families. Path analyses with 444 adolescents and their parents provided support for the model's generalizability. Specifically, mothers' and fathers' reports of economic status (i.e., income, financial and job instability) were associated with parents' economic stress. Economic stress and economic status were related to parental depressive symptoms, which, in turn, were associated with more hostile and coercive parenting, less nurturing and involved parenting, and greater

Posttraumatic stress and depression among women in Kenya's informal settlements: risk and protective factors.

Background: Approximately 56% of Kenya´s population resides in informal settlements (UN-Habitat, 2016). Female residents experience a range of psychosocial stressors including chronic poverty and high rates of interpersonal violence. Despite evidence that this population has some of the worst physical health outcomes in the country (APHRC, 2014), few studies have evaluated their mental health status and its correlates. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify risk and protective factors associated with mental health problems (posttraumatic stress & depression) among women living in

Towards the assessment of financial distress among cancer patients: a conceptual model of the financial effects of a tumour disease.

PURPOSE: A conceptualisation of subjective financial distress as a consequence of a cancer diagnosis and treatment is still missing due to a lack of a comprehensive model accounting for all relevant dimensions of financial effects of cancer experienced by patients. Our goal was to derive a model for the German healthcare system to shed light on the complex process of financial effects of cancer. METHODS: The model was developed through systematic literature review and qualitative studies, including interviews with 18 cancer patients and a focus group with 4 social services representatives. Financial hardship, financial toxicity, and transportation challenges among older cancer survivors treated with curative-intent surgery.

PURPOSE: Financial hardship (FH) and financial toxicity (FT) are associated with worse outcomes among cancer patients, and older adults experiencing transportation issues are more likely to miss follow-up care and delay care for chronic conditions during survivorship. Older adults are often eligible for federal benefits such as Medicare and Social Security, and resultantly FH, FT, and transportation issues are understudied among older adults during survivorship. METHODS: We surveyed individuals diagnosed at ≥ 50 years with breast, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancers who received curative-i

Longitudinal Prevalence of Financial Worry in a Cohort of Patients with Advanced Colorectal Cancer: A Secondary Observational Cohort Study.

IntroductionFinancial hardship during cancer treatment is common in privatised healthcare systems and has been extensively studied in cancer survivorship groups. The experience of financial concerns by people living with advanced, incurable cancer has been less frequently explored. This paper sought to describe the proportion of patients experiencing financial worry longitudinally, in a cohort with advanced colorectal cancer, in a publicly funded healthcare system.MethodsThis secondary analysis of a prospective, observational cohort study 'Palliative Care Early and Systematic (PaCES)' project,

Trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms from infancy through early childhood: The roles of perceived financial strain, social support, and intimate partner violence.

Although new mothers are at risk of heightened vulnerability for depressive symptoms, there is limited understanding regarding changes in maternal depressive symptoms over the course of the postpartum and early childhood of their child's life among rural, low-income mothers from diverse racial backgrounds. This study examined distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms among rural low-income mothers during the first five years of their child's life, at 6, 15, 24, and 58 months, using data from the Family Life Project (N = 1,292). Latent class growth analysis identified four distinct trajector

Financial health and psychiatric symptoms among veterans with psychosis or recent homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted the physical health of some vulnerable groups, but further study is needed to investigate the pandemic's impact on financial health and mental well-being. We analyzed data from 158 participants, consisting of 59 veterans with a psychotic disorder (PSY), 49 recently housed veterans (RHV), and a control group of 50 veterans (CTL) who were assessed five times from May 2020-July 2021. This study compared the financial health of these three groups and examined the relation between financial health and psychiatric symptoms. Although the CTL group rep

The Economic Burden of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Patients with Later Lines: Findings from a Real-World Analysis in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematopoietic myeloproliferative disorder that accounts for 20% of all leukemias of adults. The introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) (imatinib, bosutinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, ponatinib) has yielded significant benefits for patients with CML in terms of survival and quality of life. This real-world analysis evaluated the economic burden for managing patients with CML in 2nd or ≥ 3rd TKI lines in Italian settings of clinical practice. METHODS: A retrospective observational analysis was performed exploiting the administrative datab
