Conceptual apraxia in probable Alzheimer's disease as demonstrated by the Florida Action Recall Test.

Patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) often have difficulties associated with semantic knowledge. Therefore, conceptual apraxia, a defect of action semantics and mechanical knowledge, may be an early sign of this disease. The Florida Action Recall Test (FLART), developed to assess conceptual apraxia, consists of 45 line drawings of objects or scenes. The subject must imagine the proper tool to apply to each pictured object or scene and then pantomime its use. Twelve participants with Alzheimer's disease (NINCDS-ADRDA criteria) and 21 age- and education-matched controls were tested. N…

Outbreak of gastroenteritis associated with an interactive water fountain at a beachside park--Florida, 1999.

Since 1989, approximately 170 outbreaks associated with recreational water venues (e.g., swimming pools, waterparks, fountains, hot tubs and spas, lakes, rivers, and oceans) have been reported, with almost half resulting in gastrointestinal illness (1-5). This report summarizes the investigation of an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Florida during 1999. The findings indicated that Shigella sonnei and Cryptosporidium parvum infections caused illness in persons exposed to an "interactive" water fountain at a beachside park.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck: a 30-year experience at the University of Florida.

BACKGROUND: Outcome in previously untreated patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck needed to be assessed. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 79 patients with stage I or II non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck treated between 1964 and 1994 with radiotherapy (RT) or combined modality therapy (CMT) at the University of Florida. Freedom from relapse, cause-specific survival, and absolute survival were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Patterns of failure were defined, and the relationship between dose and infield recurrence was studied. Histology was cla…

Squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx: a review emphasizing the University of Florida philosophy.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx is strongly related to cigarette smoking and excessive ethanol intake. It is the most common head and neck cancer other than skin cancer. METHODS: We reviewed pertinent literature relative to etiology, epidemiology, and treatment results, with emphasis on the treatment philosophy at the University of Florida. RESULTS: The goals of treatment are cure and retention of a functional larynx. The probability of achieving both goals is high for patients with early disease. In contrast, a significant proportion of patients with advanced disea…

Oral rabies vaccine contact by raccoons and nontarget species in a field trial in Florida.

Rabies is enzootic in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in the eastern United States. Oral vaccination of free-ranging raccoons against rabies has the potential to control the disease in a principal reservoir and reduce the risk of rabies exposure among domestic animals and humans. Free-ranging animal contact with baits containing a vaccinia virus recombinant vaccine expressing the rabies glycoprotein gene (V-RG) was monitored in Pinellas County (Florida, USA) from February through May 1997. Bait contact was assessed with 423 tracking plate nights; conducted in four land use zones: single residential, …

Homicide or accident off the coast of Florida: trauma analysis of mutilated human remains.

In the many years Dr. William R. Maples served as a forensic anthropologist, he saw diverse sources of trauma presented in the victims of violent crime, accident and suicide in the state of Florida. In 1996 the District 18 Medical Examiner's Office of Florida requested the assistance of Dr. Maples in the analysis of human remains recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The deceased was in an advanced state of decomposition characterized by skin slippage and discoloration. The torso bore multiple lacerations, including nearly parallel lacerations in the skin of the back. Specimens were carefully mac…

The impact of legislatively imposed practice guidelines on cesarean section rates: the Florida experience.

Florida legislation implemented in the fall of 1992, unique in the nation, mandated that practice guidelines regarding cesarean section deliveries be disseminated to obstetric physicians. The law also required that peer review boards at hospitals be established to review cesarean deliveries and that the exact dates of implementation of the guidelines be reported to a state agency. To determine the impact of the legislation, we conducted a retrospective analysis of 366,246 total live births occurring in Florida hospitals during 1992 and 1993, before and after formal hospital certification of th…

Management of pterygium with surgery and radiation therapy. The North Florida Pterygium Study Group.

PURPOSE: To compare our results in the management of pterygium using a higher total dose with other reported results. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1971 and 1991, 690 patients were treated with complete surgical excision followed by beta irradiation for primary or recurrent pterygium. Of these patients, 129 had two or more areas involving both eyes for a total of 825 lesions treated. Only 17 patients (2%) had temporal lesions with the rest of the patients having nasal pterygia. All patients underwent complete surgical resection of the pterygium before undergoing radiation therapy. One hundre

Species-specific environmental drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal lagoon system of Florida.

Mosquito abundance is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, yet species-specific responses to weather and land-cover variables remain insufficiently quantified in operational mosquito control programs. This study integrates multi-year surveillance data (2021-2024) with environmental predictors to identify drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal landscape in Indian River County, Florida, USA with analyses focused on Culex nigripalpus, Aedes taeniorhynchus, and Aedes albopictus. Species-specific generalized linear mixed-effects models with a negative binomial distribution were used…

Influence of Race, Ethnicity, and Nativity on Distribution and Outcomes Among Women With Choriocarcinoma in Florida.

IntroductionWhile race/ethnicity are established factors of risk and outcomes for multiple cancers in women, nativity may more precisely estimate cancer risk and survival. The role of nativity in choriocarcinoma, a form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia arising from the placenta, is unexplored. Our objective was to examine how race, ethnicity, and nativity influence disease presentation and survival in women with choriocarcinoma in Florida.MethodsUsing the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS), we identified women diagnosed with choriocarcinoma from 1981-2020. Clinicodemographic data were ext…

Overview of the sterile insect technique for Aedes aegypti in Lee County, Florida, USA.

BACKGROUND: Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD) is an independent taxing district that works to protect human health and improve quality of life in Lee County, Florida, USA. With local dengue transmission in southern Florida, LCMCD prioritized the control of Aedes aegypti. Due to the cryptic larval habitats of Ae. aegypti and insecticide resistance, effective control using conventional methods is difficult. Thus, the sterile insect technique (SIT) program, using X-ray irradiated male mosquitoes, was created to target Ae. aegypti. The goal of this program was to suppress Ae. aegypti th…

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE OF TRANSMISSION AND HOST SPECIFICITY OF CYRTOSOMUM PENNERI IN FLORIDA'S INVASIVE LIZARDS.

The atractid nematode Cyrtosomum penneri is an autoinfective parasite of several lizard species. Intraspecific transmission between hosts appears to occur exclusively through sexual copulation, yet it is unclear how worms are transferred between different host species. Our research aims to test the possibility of oral transmission of C. penneri using experimental infections. The lizards Anolis sagrei, Leiocephalus carinatus, Hemidactylus mabouia, and Agama picticauda were experimentally exposed to C. penneri in 1 of these groups: (1) oral infection using a feces and saline slurry to approximat

Limited acceptance of buprenorphine in recovery residences in South Florida: A secret shopper survey.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is a first-line treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), essential for reducing opioid overdose mortality and improving treatment retention. Despite federal policies that mandate the acceptance of buprenorphine in recovery residences, individuals in South Florida taking this medication often face significant barriers to admission. This study uses a secret shopper survey to examine whether federal policies regarding prescribed buprenorphine use are being violated in South Florida recovery residences. METHODS: We selected recovery residences in South Florida due to the…

Severely Painful and Pruritic Forearm Rash: A Case of Caterpillar Envenomation in South Florida.

INTRODUCTION: The asp caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis) is endemic to the southeastern United States, with most sightings in Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. A few hundred caterpillar envenomations are reported annually with most cases occurring in July-November. Asp caterpillars have hollow spines along their backs that contain venom. Contact with these spines is what produces the characteristic "sting" resulting in contact dermatitis and a localized hypersensitivity reaction collectively referred to as lepidopterism. Symptoms of lepidopterism may include severe burning pain, pruritis, edema…

Prevalence of Hearing Loss and Perceptions of Hearing Health and Protection among Florida Firefighters.

Firefighters are exposed to extensive hazardous noise while on the job, both during routine tasks at the station and when responding to calls. However, little is known about firefighters' occupational noise hazards. This study employed mixed methods, including focus groups, a survey, and audiometric testing, to identify sources of noise in the firefighters' work environment, determine hearing protective strategies, discern firefighters' perceptions of occupational noise exposure and impacts to their health, and quantify the prevalence of hearing loss among South Florida firefighters. A total o…
