[Gangrenous cellulitis of the face. Apropos of a case].

Gangrenous cellulitis of the face of dental origin had a very abrupt onset, spread rapidly in spite of treatment and led to severe pleuropericardial complications. The outcome was favorable after repeated thoracic surgery. Preventive therapeutic measures for these major accidents are discussed, following a detailed report on the case presented and treatment modalities applicable, fatal outcomes still being possible in 1984 in spite of progress in therapy.

Actinomycotic granuloma of the Gasserian ganglion with primary site in a dental root. Case report.

An unusual case of cerebral actinomycosis of the Gasserian ganglion is reported. The location and the pathological diagnosis of granuloma are both extremely rare. The literature is briefly reviewed with special reference to similar reports. The manner of spread and the course of the disease are described. The present case tends to confirm the opinion that primary cerebral actinomycosis is extremely rare and probably does not exist. The case also definitely indicates that the organism reaches the central nervous system by way of nerve or perineural pathways.

Pyorrhoea as cause of pyrexia.

Three patients with fever and malaise, one of whom also had joint pains, were extensively investigated before their condition was attributed to dental sepsis. Each patient recovered fully after appropriate dental treatment. Dental sepsis should be added to the list of possible causes of pyrexia of undetermined origin, and a routine dental examination should be carried out in each case.

[Septicemia of dental origin and post-extraction coma. Apropos of 3 cases].

The authors report 3 cases of septicaemia and coma post dental extraction. These 3 patients had dental extraction in the same confessional dental clinic. After these acts the situation were so severe and they came to central hospital in Yaounde. Infections from dental origin proven by blood culture necessitate an early antibiotherapy and treatment, which propriate and sustain, but adapted to the antibiogram. The streptococcus of group F and Klebsiella pneumonia were challenged. One of the cases was negative. The presence of common signs (fever, tachycardia, chill) need the search for a seconda

[Characteristics of the clinical course and surgical tactics in odontogenic suppurative mediastinitis].

Odontogenic purulent mediastinitis arising with higher frequency in young males after mandibular periodontitis, is characterized by a rapid progression of intoxication and respiratory disorders. To achieve an immediate effect and avoid tracheostomy ameliorating the prognosis, it is necessary to perform early and adequate drainage of the purulent foci. The above form of mediastinitis should be preferably managed by bilateral transcervical drainage of the anterior and posterior mediastinum with addition of antibacterial therapy against ++non-clostridial anaerobic microflora as well as of passive

Rebound in prevalence and intensity of Onchocerca volvulus infection five years after cessation of alternative treatment strategies in the Massangam Health District, West Region, Cameroon: need for coordinated and sustained efforts.

BACKGROUND: The control of onchocerciasis currently relies on yearly distribution of ivermectin to at-risk populations. To tackle onchocerciasis in areas of high transmission (so-called hotspots) and achieve elimination of transmission, several complementary/alternative strategies (biannual ivermectin, doxycycline-based test-and-treat and vector control) were implemented in Massangam Health District (HD) in Cameroon, following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. A short-term impact evaluation revealed significant reductions in the endemicity levels in three focal hotspot communities (M

Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Complications and Their Treatment.

Focal therapy is a modern alternative to selectively treat a specific part of the prostate harboring clinically significant disease while preserving the rest of the gland. The aim of this therapeutic approach is to retain the oncological benefit of active treatment and to minimize the side-effects of common radical treatments. The oncological effectiveness of focal therapy is yet to be proven in long-term robust trials. In contrast, the toxicity profile is well-established in randomized controlled trials and multiple robust prospective cohort studies. This narrative review summarizes the relev

Creation of a national infection prevention and control programme in Sierra Leone, 2015.

Prior to the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic, Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health and Sanitation had no infection prevention and control programme. High rates of Ebola virus disease transmission in healthcare facilities underscored the need for infection prevention and control in the healthcare system. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation led an effort among international partners to rapidly stand up a national infection prevention and control programme to decrease Ebola transmission in healthcare facilities and strengthen healthcare safety and quality. Leadership and ownership by the Ministry of Heal

Spatial scales in human movement between reservoirs of infection.

The life cycle of parasitic organisms that are the cause of much morbidity in humans often depend on reservoirs of infection for transmission into their hosts. Understanding the daily, monthly and yearly movement patterns of individuals between reservoirs is therefore of great importance to implementers of control policies seeking to eliminate various parasitic diseases as a public health problem. This is due to the fact that the underlying spatial extent of the reservoir of infection, which drives transmission, can be strongly affected by inputs from external sources, i.e., individuals who ar

Evaluation of a protocol for selective empiric treatment of fever without localising signs.

A protocol for management of young febrile children at risk for bacteraemia has been used at Westmead Hospital, a university based hospital in the western Sydney region, since early 1994. Implementation of the protocol was retrospectively evaluated for the 12 month period 1 June 1994 to 31 May 1995, using the emergency department log book as the primary data source. Altogether 498 children, aged from 3 months to 3 years, with a fever > or = 39.5 degrees C were identified over this period, of whom 291 were admitted to hospital because of evidence of sepsis or identified focal infection and 207 …

Opportunistic bronchopulmonary infections after lung transplantation: clinical and radiographic findings.

PURPOSE: To assess clinical and radiographic findings in opportunistic bronchopulmonary infections after lung transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five episodes of opportunistic bronchopulmonary infection occurred in 27 (35%) of 77 lung transplant recipients during a 4-year period. Causative organisms, radiographic patterns, and mortality were reviewed. RESULTS: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was the most common pathogen (25 episodes), followed by Aspergillus species (seven episodes), Pneumocystis carinii (six episodes), herpes simplex virus (four episodes), Mycobacterium avium complex (two

[Extra-intestinal infections caused by non-typhi Salmonella serotypes. 9 yrs' experience].

BACKGROUND: The most characteristic finding in non typhoid Salmonella serotype infection is acute gastroenteritis which is usually benign and self-limiting. However, more serious extraintestinal findings, such as bacteraemia and focal infections localized to any organ may appear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The objective of this article is to describe the most important characteristics of the extraintestinal infections due to non typhoid Salmonella serotypes observed in our hospital between December 1991 and August 1999. To do so, we reviewed the clinical histories of patients in which extraintesti…
