The impact of the economic crisis and reported food insecurity in Lebanon on vitamin B12 and folate levels: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Lebanon experienced a severe economic crisis, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Beirut port explosion in August 2020. This crisis pushed over half of the population into poverty resulting in widespread food insecurity. The latter often leads to inadequate intake of essential micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and folate. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the influence of the economic crisis on the prevalence of these micronutrient deficiencies. METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted at Al Zahraa Hospital University Medical Center in Beirut, inves…

Factors Associated With Food Insecurity Among a Community-Based Sample of Older Adults in a North Florida County.

Food insecurity impacts the lives of 7.6 million U.S. adults aged 60 and older and is linked to numerous life challenges. This study examined the nature of food insecurity among community-based participants ≥65 years in a north Florida county and conceptualized food insecurity as encompassing the lack of food and individual adaptability. Thus, food insecurity was measured using three dependent variables: (1) worrying that food would run out, (2) cutting meal size or skipping meals, and (3) food not lasting. Logistic regression revealed that older participants, those with better-perceived healt…

Independent and combined associations of intimate partner violence and food insecurity on maternal depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

While research has investigated intimate partner violence (IPV) and food insecurity (FI) as independent experiences on mental health, research is lacking on the possible longitudinal associations of combined experiences of IPV and FI on maternal depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study (n = 1440), the current study examined the independent and combined associations of IPV and FI mothers experienced 3-5 years after their child's birth on depression and GAD at Year 15. Five mutually exclusive dichotomous variables were crea…

Food insecurity as a risk factor for preterm birth: a prospective facility-based cohort study in rural Haiti.

INTRODUCTION: Haiti has an estimated neonatal mortality rate of 32/1000 live births, the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Preterm birth an … r abortions was associated with reduced risk for SGA (AOR 0.41, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.97). CONCLUSIONS: Food insecurity as a risk factor for preterm birth stands out as an important addition to the understanding of the risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality. This association highlights a potentially important intervention target to improve birth outcomes and sugges …

What Drives Food Insecurity in Western Australia? How the Perceptions of People at Risk Differ to Those of Stakeholders.

Food insecurity is considered a "wicked" problem due to the highly complex and at times undefined casual factors. Although many stakeholders are working to address the problem, a possible divergence exists between their views on food insecurity and those of the people who are actually experiencing the problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there was a difference between the opinions of those "at risk" and stakeholders. A total of seven focus groups (two stakeholder groups n = 10, five "at-risk" groups n = 34) and three interviews (stakeholders n = 3) were conducted to as…

Severity of Household Food Insecurity Is Positively Associated with Mental Disorders among Children and Adolescents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity and mental disorders are both prevalent conditions among children and adolescents (i.e., youth) in the United States. Although some research has examined the association between the 2 conditions, it is not known whether more severe food insecurity is differently associated with mental disorders in youth. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between severity of household food insecurity and mental disorders among children (aged 4-11 y) and adolescents (aged 12-17 y) using valid and reliable measures of both household food security status and mental d…

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is a common congenital craniofacial anomaly influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Mothers of infants aged 0-12 months with cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), or both were recruited from a referral hospital in Tehran (2019-2020). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and food security was evaluated with a standardized instrument. Multinomial logistic regr…

The effect of an economic empowerment and relationship strengthening intervention on food insecurity among couples living with HIV in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are highly impacted by food insecurity through pathways including poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and inadequate nutrition. Limited evidence exists on whether economic empowerment interventions can improve food insecurity among PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the effectiveness of Mlambe, an economic empowerment and relationship-strengthening intervention, on food insecurity among couples living with HIV who drink alcohol in Malawi. METHODS: We analyzed data from 78 couples who participated in the Mlambe study, implemented in Zomba,…

The mitigating role of social capital on the association between food insecurity and psychological distress among Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, a pervasive global issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes. However, the role of social capital in mitigating this relationship remains understudied, particularly in the Chinese context. AIMS: This study investigated the associations between food insecurity and psychological distress (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and examined the potential moderating effects of bonding and bridging social capital among Chinese adults in Shanghai. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 3,220 Chinese adults (mean age: …

Food insecurity in households with persons with disabilities in a situation of extreme vulnerability in Brazil: a secondary cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inequities in access to education, work and health care are striking among persons with disabilities, making this population more vulnerable to poverty, lack of access to basic services and violation of rights such as access to food. Household food insecurity (HFI), marked by precarious income, has increased among persons with disabilities. In Brazil, the Continuous Cash Benefit (In Portuguese, Benefício de Prestação Continuada - BPC) is the guarantee of a minimum wage for persons with disabilities as a measure to promote social security and access to income in a situation of extre…

Pharmacokinetics of lopinavir/ritonavir and efavirenz in food insecure HIV-infected pregnant and breastfeeding women in Tororo, Uganda.

Pregnancy and food insecurity may impact antiretroviral (ART) pharmacokinetics (PK), adherence and response. We sought to quantify and characterize the PK of lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) and efavirenz (EFV) by pregnancy and nutritional status among HIV-infected women in Tororo, Uganda. In 2011, 62/225 ante-partum/post-partum single dried blood spot samples DBS and 43 post-partum hair samples for LPV/r were derived from 116 women, 51/194 ante-/post-partum DBS and 53 post-partum hair samples for EFV from 105 women. Eighty percent of Ugandan participants were severely food insecure, 26% lost weigh…

Linking neighborhood characteristics to food insecurity in older adults: the role of perceived safety, social cohesion, and walkability.

Among the 14.6% of American households experiencing food insecurity, approximately 2 million are occupied by older adults. Food insecurity among older adults has been linked to poor health, lower cognitive function, and poor mental health outcomes. While evidence of the association between individual or household-level factors and food insecurity has been documented, the role of neighborhood-level factors is largely understudied. This study uses data from a representative sample of 1,870 New York City senior center participants in 2008 to investigate the relationship between three neighborhood…
