The present study compared the recovery of six periodontal pathogens by paper point samples from two different aspects of periodontal lesions by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Twenty patients with untreated chronic periodontitis were randomized into two groups. Before subgingival instrumentation and after 10 weeks samples in group A were taken first with a paper point half length (HP) of the probing depth, then with a paper point full length (FP) at the same site. In group B sampling sequence was reversed. Analysis by real-time PCR enabled quantification of six bacteri

Periodontal disease is a microbially-mediated inflammatory disease of tooth-supporting tissues that leads to bone and tissue loss around teeth. Although bacterially-mediated mechanisms of alveolar bone destruction have been widely studied, the effects of a polymicrobial infection on the periodontal ligament and microbiome/virome have not been well explored. Therefore, the current investigation introduced a new mouse model of periodontal disease to examine the effects of a polymicrobial infection on periodontal ligament (PDL) properties, changes in bone loss, the host immune response, and the m

BACKGROUND: The association of periodontal bacteria with lipid profile alteration remains largely unknown, although it has been suggested that chronic periodontitis increases the atherosclerotic risk. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between the prevalence and total burden of periodontal bacteria and serum lipid profile.
METHODS: Saliva from enrolled participants was collected to detect 4 major periodontal bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and Prevotella intermedia) using Polymerase Chain Reaction method. High-density lipopr

BACKGROUND: Extensive research on the antimicrobial activity of medicinal plants for periodontal therapy has been conducted over the past decades. The gradual increase in antibiotic resistance necessitates research for new antimicrobial compounds. Rubia cordifolia has exhibited reassuring antimicrobial potential against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. However, no study has yet evaluated its therapeutic potential in periodontal diseases. Therefore, we aimed to design, formulate, and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of R. cordifolia root extract against periodontal pathogens.

Phillyrin (PHY), also known as forsythin, is an active constituent isolated from the fruit of Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl (Oleaceae). It exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antioxidant properties. However, the precise impact of PHY on colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and its mechanism remain elusive. The present investigation revealed that PHY (12.5, 25.0, and 50.0 mg/kg) exhibited significant therapeutic efficacy in protecting mice against DSS-induced colitis. This effect was manifested as reduced weight loss, a shortened colon, increased secretion of inflammatory

Oral microbiome dysbiosis mediates chronic periodontal disease, gut microbial dysbiosis, and mucosal barrier disfunction that leads to steatohepatitis via the enterohepatic circulation. Improving this dysbiosis towards health may improve liver disease. Treatment with antibiotics and probiotics have been used to modulate the microbial, immunological, and clinical landscape of periodontal disease with some success. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the potential for nisin, an antimicrobial peptide produced by Lactococcus lactis, to counteract the periodontitis-associated gut d

Periodontal diseases are polymicrobial immune-inflammatory diseases that can severely destroy tooth-supporting structures. The critical bacteria responsible for this destruction include red complex bacteria such as Porphoromonas gingivalis, Tanerella forsythia and Treponema denticola. These organisms have developed adaptive immune mechanisms against bacteriophages/viruses, plasmids and transposons through clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and their associated proteins (Cas). The CRISPR-Cas system contributes to adaptive immunity, and this acquired genetic immun
