Axillary artery injury from a closed humeral neck fracture: A case report.

Axillary artery injury from humeral neck fracture is an uncommon event. Vascular damage due to these injuries may threaten limb loss. In some cases, the signs of ischemia may not be evident just after the injury and may only appear later on. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is essential. It is important to bear this association in mind, so as to make an early diagnosis and avoid serious complications. We are describing the case of a young patient involved in a motor vehicle crash with an axillary artery trauma due to the surgical neck of humerus fracture. The patient underwent a basilic ve

A visual servo-based teleoperation robot system for closed diaphyseal fracture reduction.

Common fracture treatments include open reduction and intramedullary nailing technology. However, these methods have disadvantages such as intraoperative X-ray radiation, delayed union or nonunion and postoperative rotation. Robots provide a novel solution to the aforementioned problems while posing new challenges. Against this scientific background, we develop a visual servo-based teleoperation robot system. In this article, we present a robot system, analyze the visual servo-based control system in detail and develop path planning for fracture reduction, inverse kinematics, and output forces

Closed reduction of laterally displaced fracture/dislocation of the mandibular condylar process in a child.

This is a unique case of isolated lateral fracture/dislocation of the condylar process in a 3-year-old child injured on an escalator. Immediate closed reduction under general anesthesia successfully restored condylar height and premorbid dental occlusion. Maxillomandibular fixation was not used because mandibular mobilization was encouraged. Clinical follow-up confirmed maintenance of normal dental occlusion and temporomandibular joint function.

The hematoma block: a simple, effective technique for closed reduction of ankle fracture dislocations.

Management of a dislocated ankle fracture can be challenging because of instability of the ankle mortise, a compromised soft tissue envelope, and the potential neurovascular compromise. Every effort should be made to quickly and efficiently relocate the disrupted ankle joint. Within the emergency department setting, narcotics and benzodiazepines can be used to sedate the patient before attempting closed reduction. The combination of narcotics and benzodiazepines provides relief of pain and muscle guarding; however, it conveys a risk of seizure as well as respiratory arrest. An alternative to c

The handshake technique: proposal of a closed manual reduction technique for Colles' wrist fracture.

Colles' fracture is a distal radius injury, with dorsal tilt of the distal radial fracture fragment. Its typical treatment involves reduction and plaster cast immobilization to restore its anatomical position. Sometimes, reduction maneuver may be difficult with poor outcomes, requiring repeated reduction maneuvers or eventual surgical treatment. The author proposes a simple, easy, and reliable manual reduction technique.

Complication of a closed Colles-fracture: necrotising fasciitis with lethal outcome. A case report.

We report a case of a 77-year-old female patient who died 4 days after a closed colles-fracture of the right wrist because of secondary emerged necrotising fasciitis. At the time of visiting our emergency department, the patient reports about untypical pain and progressive swelling of the entire right arm 3 days following a fall onto the outstretched hand where she sustained a closed distal radius fracture. Within 6 h, the patient developed hypotension and fever leading to cardiac and respiratory failure. The emergent-induced diagnostic presented a severe septic situation in the laboratory exa

Bony entrapment of ulnar nerve after closed forearm fracture: a case report.

We report a case of ulnar nerve palsy following forearm fracture in a 13-year-old girl. Significant anterior angulation and displacement of the ulna were noted. Operation was performed 3 months after the injury, when no recovery of numbness and claw hand deformity were demonstrated. Intra-operatively the ulnar nerve was found to be embedded between fragments of the fractured ulna, which showed lack of callus formation on the preoperative radiograph. The patient achieved complete recovery of sensory and motor functions 4 months after the surgery.

Immediate microcirculatory derangements in skeletal muscle and periosteum after closed tibial fracture.

BACKGROUND: Severe musculoskeletal soft tissue injury sustained after a closed fracture to the extremities significantly influences bone healing and determines the patient's prognosis. The present study was aimed at quantitatively assessing immediate microcirculatory changes in skeletal muscle and periosteum after standardized closed fracture. METHODS: Standardized closed fracture of the left tibia in isoflurane-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 14) was induced using a modified weight-drop technique. The left extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle (n = 7) and tibial periosteum (n = 7) wer

Acute haematogenous osteomyelitis: an unusual complication following a closed fracture of the femur in a child.

We report a rare case of an acute haematogenous osteomyelitis of the femur in a five-year-old boy following a closed fracture of the femur. Because of its rare occurrence, the diagnosis of osteomyelitis was missed initially. He presented with a groin abscess seven weeks after injury. He was treated with external fixation, repeated debridements and intravenous antibiotics. Culture grew Staphylococcus aureus. The latest follow-up one-year after the injury showed resolution of the infection and union of the fracture. The range of knee movement is limited from 0-90 degrees due to quadriceps contra

The effect of a femoral fracture on concomitant closed head injury in patients with multiple injuries.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the effect of a femoral shaft fracture, and its treatment by early intramedullary nailing, on the neurologic outcome of patients with multiple injuries with a concomitant head injury. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control design using a prospectively gathered trauma data base. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified 46 patients with multiple injuries (mean Injury Severity Score [ISS] = 33.2) with closed head injuries (mean Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] score = 7.8) and femur fractures, and matched as controls 99 patients with multiple injuries with head injuries but w

Long-term evaluation of Bennett's fracture. A comparison between open and closed reduction.

18 patients with Bennett's fracture were evaluated after a mean follow-up period of 10.7 years. Treatment consisted of closed reduction and K-wire fixation in seven cases and open reduction with osteosynthesis in 11 cases. Overall, symptoms were few and restricted mobility of the thumb could not be demonstrated. The strength of the affected hand was decreased in all patients regardless of the type of treatment. Osteoarthritis was found to correlate with the quality of reduction of the fracture, but had developed in almost all cases even after exact reduction. Exact reduction, either by the ope

Posterior tibial nerve neurotmesis complicating a closed tibial fracture. A case report.

A case of complete transection of the posterior tibial nerve complicating a closed mid-shaft fracture of the tibia is reported. Early surgical exploration and repair resulted in return of function within 6 months. Such injuries are not common, but the case described highlights the importance of vigilance in assessment of all limb fractures.

Axillary artery damage following a closed fracture of the neck of the humerus--a case report.

A case of intimal tearing of the axillary artery in association with a close fracture of the neck of the humerus is described. This is a rare injury and illustrates that vascular damage should never be assumed to be due to spasm. Exploration must be carried out because a mechanical vascular occlusion is most likely.

Management of chronic monteggia fractures with ulnar osteotomy, external fixation and gradual closed reduction of radial head.

PURPOSE: At present, there is no standardized surgical protocol for chronic Monteggia fractures, particularly in patients who are older than 10, have missed radial head dislocation for over 1 year, or have developed radial head deformities. Current surgical approaches remain suboptimal and are often associated with poor clinical outcomes. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 14 patients with chronic Monteggia fractures who had been managed with ulnar osteotomy, external fixation and gradual closed reduction of radial head at our institution between January 2022 and November 2025. By a
