Biomagnification of mercury in aquatic food webs: a worldwide meta-analysis.

The slope of the simple linear regression between log10 transformed mercury (Hg) concentration and stable nitrogen isotope values (δ(15)N), hereafter called trophic magnification slope (TMS), from several trophic levels in a food web can represent the overall degree of Hg biomagnification. We compiled data from 69 studies that determined total Hg (THg) or methyl Hg (MeHg) TMS values in 205 aquatic food webs worldwide. Hg TMS values were compared against physicochemical and biological factors hypothesized to affect Hg biomagnification in aquatic systems. Food webs ranged across 1.7 ± 0.7 (mean

Distribution and speciation of heavy metals in sediments from the mainstream, tributaries, and lakes of the Yangtze River catchment of Wuhan, China.

A comparative study of the heavy metal (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations in sediments collected from the mainstream, tributaries, and lakes of the Yangtze River catchment of Wuhan, China, was conducted. Compared with the maximum background values in Wuhan Province soils, Cd was the metal with the highest contamination level, especially in the mainstream, followed by Zn and Cu. In a few samples from tributaries and lakes, the Hg concentration was very high compared to background levels. The concentrations of As and Ni in all sites fluctuated close to background levels. Partiti

Square wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry automated by sequential injection analysis Potentialities and limitations exemplified by the determination of methyl parathion in water samples.

This paper describes the development and evaluation of a sequential injection method to automate the determination of methyl parathion by square wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry exploiting the concept of monosegmented flow analysis to perform in-line sample conditioning and standard addition. Accumulation and stripping steps are made in the sample medium conditioned with 40 mmolL(-1) Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 10) in 0.25 molL(-1) NaNO3. The homogenized mixture is injected at a flow rate of 10 microLs(-1) toward the flow cell, which is adapted to the capillary of a hanging drop

Residence times and age distributions of spring waters at the Semmering catchment area, Eastern Austria, as inferred from tritium, CFCs and stable isotopes.

The groundwater system in the mountainous area of Semmering, Austria, was studied by environmental tracers in several karst springs. The tracers used included stable isotopes ((18)O, (2)H), tritium ((3)H) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The tracers provided valuable information in regard to (1) the mean altitude of the spring catchment areas; (2) the residence time and age distribution of the spring waters; and (3) the interconnection of the springs to a sinkhole. The combination of the stable isotopic data and the topography/geology provided the estimates of the mean altitudes of the catchmen

Effect of loading rate on the fate of mercury in littoral mesocosms.

The effects of changes in atmospheric mercury (Hg) deposition on aquatic ecosystems are poorly understood. In this study, we examined the biogeochemical cycling of Hg in littoral mesocosms receiving different loading rates (7-107 microg Hg m(-2) year(-1)). We added a 202Hg-enriched preparation to differentiate the experimentally added Hg from the ambient Hg in the environment. This approach allowed us to follow the distribution and methylation of the isotopically enriched ("spike") Hg in the mesocosms. Within 3 weeks, spike Hg was distributed throughout the main environmental compartments (wat

Influences of iron, manganese, and dissolved organic carbon on the hypolimnetic cycling of amended mercury.

The biogeochemical cycling of iron, manganese, sulfide, and dissolved organic carbon were investigated to provide information on the transport and removal processes that control the bioavailability of isotopic mercury amended to a lake. Lake profiles showed a similar trend of hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe, Mn, DOC, sulfide, and the lake spike ((202)Hg, purity 90.8%) and ambient of pools of total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg). Hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe and Mn indicated that reductive mobilization occurred primarily at the sediment-water interface and that Fe and Mn oxides were abun

Assessment of risk to aquatic biota from elevated salinity -- a case study from the Hunter River, Australia.

An ecological risk assessment was performed on salinity levels of the Hunter River and its tributaries to respond to concerns that high salinity may be damaging aquatic ecosystems. Probabilistic techniques were used to assess likelihood and consequence, and hence the risk to aquatic biota from salinity. Continuous electrical conductivity distributions were used to describe the likelihood that high salinity would occur (exposure dataset) and toxicity values were compiled from the limited literature sources available to describe the consequence of high salinity (effects dataset). The assessment

Vertical cross contamination of trichloroethylene in a borehole in fractured sandstone.

Boreholes drilled through contaminated zones in fractured rock create the potential for vertical movement of contaminated ground water between fractures. The usual assumption is that purging eliminates cross contamination; however, the results of a field study conducted in a trichloroethylene (TCE) plume in fractured sandstone with a mean matrix porosity of 13% demonstrates that matrix-diffusion effects can be strong and persistent. A deep borehole was drilled to 110 m below ground surface (mbgs) near a shallow bedrock well containing high TCE concentrations. The borehole was cored continuousl

Quantifying the effects of fumarate on in situ reductive dechlorination rates.

In situ methods are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical amendments at enhancing reductive dechlorination rates in groundwater that is contaminated with the priority pollutant, trichloroethene (TCE). In this communication, a method that utilizes single-well, "push-pull" tests to quantify the effects of chemical amendments on in situ reductive dechlorination rates is presented and demonstrated. Five push-pull tests were conducted in each of five monitoring wells located in a TCE-contaminated aquifer at the site of a former chemical manufacturing facility. Rates for the reductive dec

Quantitative and rapid detection of the trichloroethylene-degrading bacterium Methylocystis sp. M in groundwater by real-time PCR.

We developed a method based on real-time PCR for the specific and rapid enumeration of a trichloroethylene-degrading methanotroph, Methylocystis sp. M, with the aim of monitoring the strain in groundwater. A primer set designed from the nucleotide sequence of the mmoC gene of a soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) gene cluster from Methylocystis sp. M was specific to amplify the DNA region from the strain and no PCR products were amplified with the sMMO gene clusters from six other methanotroph strains. The real-time PCR reliably quantified Methylocystis sp. M over at least five orders of magn

Blue-green algae (Anabaena spiroides) toxicosis in pigs.

Toxicosis caused by Anabaena spiroides was diagnosed in 7 of 26 finishing hogs in a farrow-to-finish operation in Kentucky. Several sick pigs in the herd had the following clinical signs: vomiting, dull appearance, lethargy, anorexia, muscle tremors, frothing at the mouth, coughing, sneezing, dyspnea, and bloody diarrhea. Of the 7 dead pigs, 2 were necropsied. Tissue speciments and stomach contents were obtained for microscopic, microbiologic, and toxicologic evaluations. In addition, vomitus from sick pigs and pond water samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Direct microscopic exami

Effects of acidification on mercury methylation, demethylation, and volatilization in sediments from an acid-susceptible lake.

The effect of experimental acidification on mercury methylation, demethylation, and volatilization was examined in surficial sediment samples from a weakly buffered northern Wisconsin lake. All mercury transformations were measured with radioisotopic tracers. Acidification of sediment pH with H2SO4, HCl, or HNO3 significantly decreased 203Hg(II) methylation. Acidification of pH 6.1 (ambient) sediments to pH 4.5 with either H2SO4 or HCl inhibited methylation by over 65%. The decreased methylation was due to the increased hydrogen ion concentration because methylation was not affected by concent

Isolation and characterization of Arthrobacter bacteriophages and their application to phage typing of soil arthrobacters.

Seventeen bacteriophages, active against 19 Arthrobacter soil isolates, were isolated from concentrated samples of river water and sewage. Attempts to isolate Arthrobacter bacteriophages from filtrates of broth cultures of the soil isolates or from ultraviolet light-irradiated cultures were unsuccessful. Bacteriophages were not detected in either concentrated or unconcentrated soil extracts. Electron microscopic studies of 11 phages showed morphologies characteristic of Bradley's groups B (exhibited by 9 phages) and C (exhibited by 2 phages). Mercury mobilization in urban stormwater runoff.

Urban stormwater runoff has been identified as a leading cause of waterway impairment for many pollutants, but there has been a lack of research that directly measures Hg in urban stormwater runoff. The objectives of this research were: to use high frequency sampling to characterize the Hg export dynamics from an urban micro-catchment (i.e. a parking lot) during individual rain events; determine the relationship between suspended sediments and Hg transport; assemble event-scale mass balances of atmospheric Hg inputs, surface storage, and Hg export in runoff to evaluate the relative importance

Investigations on methyl mercury contamination of fishes in the Second Songhua River.

Fishes in the middle reaches of the Second Songhua River in Jilin Province were heavily contaminated by methyl mercury, the average content of 61 fish samples being 0.42 mg/kg. The upper and lower reaches were less contaminated and the averages were 0.12 mg/kg (53 samples) and 0.08 mg/kg (20 samples), respectively. The average methyl mercury content of fishes (20 samples) collected from a nearby "nonpolluted" water reservoir was 0.03 mg/kg. In a total of 134 fish samples collected from the Second Songhua River, 41% of the samples had a methyl mercury content exceeding the National Tolerance Li

Listeria monocytogenes in Fresh Produce: Outbreaks, Prevalence and Contamination Levels.

Listeria monocytogenes, a member of the genus Listeria, is widely distributed in agricultural environments, such as soil, manure and water. This organism is a recognized foodborne pathogenic bacterium that causes many diseases, from mild gastroenteritis to severe blood and/or central nervous system infections, as well as abortion in pregnant women. Generally, processed ready-to-eat and cold-stored meat and dairy products are considered high-risk foods for L. monocytogenes infections that cause human illness (listeriosis). However, recently, several listeriosis outbreaks have been linked to fre

Inhibition of methylmercury uptake by freshwater phytoplankton in presence of algae-derived organic matter.

As the first step of methylmercury (MeHg) entry into the aquatic food webs, MeHg uptake by phytoplankton is crucial in determining the final human MeHg exposure risks. MeHg availability to plankton is regulated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water, while the extent of the impacts can vary largely based on the sources of DOM. Here, we investigated impacts of DOM sources on MeHg bioconcentration by three freshwater phytoplankton species (i.e. S. quadricauda, Chlorella sp., Microcystis elabens) in the laboratory system. We found that algae-derived DOM would prohibited the cellular MeHg
