Volumetric analysis of the maxillary, sphenoid and frontal sinuses: A comparative computerized tomography based study.

OBJECTIVE: To study volume characteristics of the maxillary, sphenoid and frontal sinuses among healthy Caucasians adults, using computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: A retrospective, case series study in a single academic center, CT scans of 201 consecutive adult subjects, performed between January and September 2014, were reviewed for the volume and dimensions of the paranasal sinuses. Patients with documented sinus pathology or lack of pneumatization were excluded. The study population was subdivided by gender and age (50 men age 25-64; 51 men age ≥65; 50 women age 25-64, and 50 women a

Morphology, constraints, and scaling of frontal sinuses in the hartebeest, Alcelaphus buselaphus (Mammalia: Artiodactyla, Bovidae).

The frontal sinuses of bovid mammals display a great deal of diversity, which has been attributed to both phylogenetic and functional influences. In-depth study of the hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), a large African antelope, reveals a number of previously undescribed details of frontal sinus morphology. In A. buselaphus, the frontal sinuses conform closely to the shape of the frontal bone, filling nearly the entire element. However, the horncores are never extensively pneumatized, contrasting with the condition seen in many other bovids. This evidence is inconsistent with the hypothesis t

Changes in the frontal sinuses of the weasel (Mustela nivalis) in Poland possibly caused by nematodes or trematodes.

The presence of parasitic Nematodes was determined by visual assessment of damage to the 271 weasel skulls (154 males and 117 females). The damages were attributed to Skrjabingylus nasicola (Leuckart, 1842) or Troglotrema acutum (Leuckart, 1842) (on the basis of it's appearance and relevant papers). The frequency of infestation by both parasites was 38%. It was higher in females and also increased along with age. A significant dependence between skull length of adult specimens and infestation rate was found.

Rapid serological diagnosis of Aspergillus fumigatus infection of the frontal sinuses and nasal chambers of the dog.

Aspergillus fumigatus precipitins in dog sera were detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE). The procedure gave results within 90 minutes compared with 72 to 96 hours required in agar-gel double diffusion. Culture-filtrate antigens from two-week-old cultures of A fumigatus and two-day-old mycelial antigens produced the strongest reactions in CIE tests and the former antigen also revealed high titres in tests with serum from seven of 14 dogs with A fumigatus precipitins. Serum from these 14 dogs also reacted in CIE tests with a number of Penicillium species antigens.

Treatment of recurrent barotraumatic and infectious frontal sinusitis by navigated balloon dilation of the nasofrontal duct.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent barotraumatic or isolated infectious frontal sinusitis is linked to anatomical variants of the nasofrontal duct (NFD). Anterior ethmoidectomy, the standard treatment, is incomplete in 50-80% of cases, incurring a 19% rate of stenosis. Balloon dilation of the NFD could be an alternative. OBJECTIVES: The primary study objective was to evaluate the safety of the device. The secondary objective was to analyze its long-term efficacy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center study including patients treated by NFD enlargement using a navigated dilation …

Frontal Sinus Mucopyocele Presenting as a Painful Subcutaneous Forehead Mass in a Patient with Chronic Sinusitis.

Mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses are benign, expansile lesions that develop secondary to sinus ostia obstruction. Presenting signs and symptoms vary widely but frequently include frontal headache and swelling, as well as visual changes and globe displacement depending on orbital involvement in the case of frontal sinus mucoceles. Given the potential for orbital or intracranial involvement, urgent imaging with computed tomography (CT) is important for patients with symptoms concerning for a frontal sinus mucocele. Definitive treatment is surgical. In this article, we report a case of a 50-yea

Computed tomography analysis of the anterior ethmoid genu of the frontal recess in non-diseased sinuses.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of anatomical variations of the frontal recess and frontal sinus and recognition of endoscopic landmarks are vital for safe and effective endoscopic sinus surgery. This study revisited an anatomical landmark in the frontal recess that could serve as a guide to the frontal sinus. METHOD: Prevalence of the anterior ethmoid genu, its morphology and its relationship with the frontal sinus drainage pathway was assessed. Computed tomography scans with multiplanar reconstruction were used to study non-diseased sinonasal complexes. RESULTS: The anterior ethmoidal genu was presen

Analysis of Frontal Sinuses for Personal Identification in a Chinese Sample Using a New Code Number.

The study of frontal sinuses for personal identification is a considered approach in the forensic field. In Yoshino's system, the frontal sinus patterns of a given person were formulated as a code number (codY) obtained by arranging the class numbers in each classification item. The aim of this work was to use a new code number (codC) with eight digits that includes other two continuous variables obtained as ratios SOR1 (left frontal sinus area/left orbit area) and SOR2 (right frontal sinus area/right orbit area), comparing the results with that of Yoshino. Digital radiographic images of the s

Trephination of the frontal sinuses and instillation of clotrimazole cream: a computed tomographic study in canine cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: To use computed tomography (CT) to assess the distribution of surgically administered clotrimazole cream and associated filling of the frontal sinuses and caudal aspect of the nasal cavities in canine cadavers. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study. ANIMALS: Small (n = 1) and medium-large (n = 11) breed canine cadavers. METHODS: CT scans of 12 cadaveric canine heads were used to confirm absence of sinonasal disease. Then after creating an opening into the left and right frontal sinuses with a 3.2 mm Steinmann pin at standardized landmarks, clotrimazole cream (20 g) was instilled into

Radiographic density profiles link frontal and anterior ethmoid sinuses behavior in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) may occur through heterogeneous disease processes. It is possible that more than 1 inflammatory process underlies CRS in any given patient. If so, heterogeneity in processes may be a function of the spatial organization of the paranasal sinuses. Density characteristics of sinus opacities on computed tomography (CT) scans offer insight into the nature of sinus opacities and disease, in general, and may thus be used to detect spatial heterogeneity of sinus disease within a given patient. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review of CRS patients

[Variants of the anatomical structure of frontal sinuses based on the results of X-ray computed tomography].

The objective of the present work was to analyse computed tomograms of brain and paranasal sinuses obtained from 3,054 patients with a view to elucidating specific features of the latter's structure. The following structural variants were distinguished: agenesia, hypogenesia, and hypergenesia. Orbital, zygomatic, temporal, cock's comb, ethmoidal, and nasal recesses in the frontal sinuses were described. It is concluded that the marked structural variability of frontal sinuses is responsible for the great variety of clinical manifestations of frontitis.

Osteoblastoma of the frontal sinuses presenting with headache and blurred vision: case report and review of the literature.

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor that usually arises in the vertebral column and long bones of young adults. Craniofacial involvement is extremely rare. To date, osteoblastoma of the frontal sinus has not been reported in the English literature. We report an osteoblastoma of both frontal sinuses in a 23-year-old male who presented with headache and blurry vision in the left eye. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated an expansile lesion involving both frontal sinuses with sclerotic and fibrous components, eroding into the roof of the left orbit. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the

Large concha bullosa mucopyocele replacing the anterior ethmoid sinuses and contiguous with the frontal sinus.

Concha bullosa, a pneumatized middle turbinate, is a common anatomic variant found in the paranasal sinuses. When a concha bullosa becomes obstructed, it can form a mucocele and, eventually, a mucopyocele if it becomes secondarily infected. This is a rare phenomenon; only 9 concha bullosa mucopyoceles have been previously reported in the English-language literature. We present the case of a large concha bullosa mucopyocele in a pediatric patient in which the concha bullosa replaced the anterior ethmoid sinuses and was contiguous with the frontal sinus.
