Recent studies have proposed a connection between the individual alpha band peak frequency and the temporal resolution of visual perception in healthy human participants. This connection rests on animal studies describing oscillations in the alpha band as a mode of phasic thalamocortical information transfer for low-level visual stimuli, which critically relies on GABAergic interneurons. Here, we investigated the interplay of these parameters by measuring occipital alpha band peak frequency by means of magnetoencephalography, visual temporal resolution by means of behavioral testing, and occip

Morphology is the aspect of language concerned with the internal structure of words. In the past decades, a large body of masked priming (behavioral and neuroimaging) data has suggested that the visual word recognition system automatically decomposes any morphologically complex word into a stem and its constituent morphemes. Yet the reliance of morphology on other reading processes (e.g., orthography and semantics), as well as its underlying neuronal mechanisms are yet to be determined. In the current magnetoencephalography study, we addressed morphology from the perspective of the unification

This study investigates the cortical abnormalities of early emotion perception in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) using gamma oscillations. Twenty-three MDD patients, twenty-five BD patients, and twenty-four normal controls were enrolled and their event-related magnetoencephalographic responses were recorded during implicit emotional tasks. Our results demonstrated abnormal gamma activity within 100 ms in the emotion-related regions (amygdala, orbitofrontal (OFC) cortex, anterior insula (AI), and superior temporal pole) in the MDD patients, suggesting th

Working conditions such as shift work constitute a well-known risk factor for insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness complaints. We compared brain gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamic acid (Glu), glutamine (Gln), and Glx (Glu+Gln) levels in day-shift versus alternate-shift workers with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) at 3T. The study population consisted of 32 healthy adult volunteers (16 day-shift and 16 alternate-shift workers). Each subject underwent MRS conducted using a MEGA-PRESS sequence in the early morning and early evening on the same day. Spectroscopy voxels

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the operation of choice for removal of the gallbladder. Unrecognized bile duct injuries present with biliary peritonitis and systemic sepsis. Bile has been shown to cause damage to the vascular wall and therefore delay the healing of injured arteries leading to pseudoaneurysm formation. Failure to deal with bile leak and secondary infection may result in pseudoaneurysm formation. This study was to report the incidence and outcomes of pseudoaneurysm in patients with bile leak following LC referred to our hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective analys

In the context of a study of the effects of gamma-vinyl-GABA (GVG) on seizure occurrence and on EEG abnormalities we present three cases with focal epilepsy in which new clinical and EEG paroxysmal manifestations were observed during GVG therapy. At that time, whereas an amelioration or no change in patients' habitual seizures were observed, myoclonic jerks appeared with related changes in the EEG paroxysmal abnormalities, represented by generalized polyspike and wave complexes. An electroclinical correlation was recorded in one case. These data indicate that, although occurring rarely, it is

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a prevalent postoperative complication of the central nervous system (CNS) in elderly patients. Advanced age is an independent risk factor for developing PND. Microglia are essential immune cells in the CNS and play a critical role in neuroinflammation. The activation of microglia is closely linked to PND, although the precise mechanism remains unclear. Gamma oscillations (30-100 Hz) are associated with higher cognitive functions, including attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which microglial activation in PND disr

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X-linked disorder that often leads to intellectual disability, anxiety, and sensory hypersensitivity. While sound sensitivity (hyperacusis) is a distressing symptom in FXS, its neural basis is not well understood. It is postulated that hyperacusis may stem from temporal lobe hyperexcitability or dysregulation in top-down modulation. Studying the neural mechanisms underlying sound sensitivity in FXS using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is challenging because the temporal and frontal regions have overlapping neural projections that are difficult to differentiat

Aging is the primary risk factor for cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by impaired circuit plasticity and disrupted gamma oscillations. Non-invasive 40 Hz audiovisual stimulation (AuViS) has emerged as a promising strategy to restore cognition in models of Alzheimer's disease and stroke. Yet, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. We found that AuViS increased gamma oscillations in the dentate gyrus of middle-aged mice. Control animals displayed scarce neurogenesis, and newborn neurons exhibited limited growth and remained functionally immature.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by repetitive muscle contractions, twisting movements, and abnormal posture, affecting 20% of pediatric arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) survivors. Recent studies have reported that children with dystonia are at higher risk of cognitive deficits. The connection between impaired motor outcomes and cognitive impairment in dystonia is not fully understood; dystonia might affect motor control alone, or it could also contribute to cognitive impairment through disruptions in higher-order motor processes. To assess the functional correlates underlying motor

OBJECTIVE: In healthy subjects, the long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity of the primary motor cortex (M1) induced by intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) can be boosted by modulating gamma (γ) oscillations through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). γ-tACS also reduces short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI). We tested whether the effects of γ-tACS differ between young (YA) and older adults (OA).
METHODS: Twenty YA (27.2 ± 2.7 years) and twenty OA (65.3 ± 9.5 years) underwent iTBS-γ tACS and iTBS-sham tACS in randomized sessions. In a separate session, w

The present study was performed to investigate whether H2S could restore the diurnal variation in cardiac function of aging mice and explore the potential mechanisms. We found that ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS) in 3-month-old mice exhibited diurnal variations over a 24-hour period. However, the diurnal variations were disrupted in 18-month-old mice, and there was a decline in EF and FS. In addition, the plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were increased, and H2S concentrations and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were decreased in 18-month-old mice. Then, CSE KO mi

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) continue to persist despite effective control of viral replication. Although the mechanisms underlying HAND are poorly understood, recent attention has focused on altered neuronal population activity as a correlate of impaired cognition. However, while alterations in neuronal population activity in the gamma frequency range are noted in the setting of HAND, the underlying mechanisms for these changes is unclear. Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are a specialized extracellular matrix that surrounds a subset of inhibitory neurons important to the expression

BACKGROUND: Sub-anesthetic doses of the non-competitive N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) antagonist ketamine evoke transient psychotomimetic effects, followed by persistent antidepressant effects in treatment-resistant depressed patients and rodents through still poorly understood mechanisms. Since phencyclidine (PCP) disinhibits thalamo-cortical networks by blocking NMDA-Rs on GABAergic neurons of the reticular thalamic nucleus (RtN), we examined ketamine's actions in the same areas.

While perception is recognized as being atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), the underlying mechanisms for such atypicality are unclear. Here we test the hypothesis that individuals with ASC will show enhanced orientation discrimination compared with neurotypical observers. This prediction is based both on anecdotal report of superior discriminatory skills in ASC and also on evidence in the auditory domain that some individuals with ASC have superior pitch discrimination. In order to establish whether atypical perception might be mediated by an imbalance in the ratio

A newly isolated interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) immunoreactive molecule, "neuronal IFN-gamma", and recombinant lymphocyte-derived IFN-gamma were injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) through a previously implanted cannula into adult male rats during both the light and the dark phases of the light/dark cycle. The two molecules caused a reduction in both frequency and duration of rearing and locomotion during the dark, but not the light, phase. A molecule isolated from Trypanosoma brucei brucei, a parasite of the same subspecies of trypanosomes which causes African sleeping sickness, can ind

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a general neurodevelopmental disease characterized by unusual social communication and rigid, repetitive behavior patterns. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ASD on the alteration of neural oscillatory patterns and synaptic plasticity, which commonly supported a wide range of basic and higher memory activities. Accordingly, a prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure rat model was established for studying autism. The behavioral experiments showed that the social orientation declined and the memory ability was significantly impaired in VPA

Research on light modulation has typically examined the wavelength, intensity, and exposure time of light, and measured rhythm, sleep, and cognitive ability to evaluate the regulatory effects of light variables on physiological and cognitive functions. Although the frequency of light is one of the main dimensions of light, few studies have attempted to manipulate it to test the effect on brain activation and performance. Recently, 40-Hz light stimulation has been proven to significantly alleviate deficits in gamma oscillation of the hippocampus caused by Alzheimer's disease. Although this osci

Acetylcholine in the brain promotes arousal and facilitates cognitive functions. Cholinergic neurons in the mesopontine brainstem and basal forebrain are important for activation of the cerebral cortex, which is characterized by the suppression of irregular slow waves, an increase in gamma (30- 100 Hz) activity in the electroencephalogram, and the appearance of a hippocampal theta rhythm. During general anesthesia, a decrease in acetylcholine release and cholinergic functions contribute to the desired outcomes of general anesthesia, such as amnesia, loss of awareness and consciousness, and imm
