Sexual Orientation Differences in Health and Wellbeing Among Women Living with HIV in Canada: Findings from a National Cohort Study.

Sexual orientation differences in health and wellbeing among women living with HIV (WLH) are underexplored. Limited research available, however, suggests that sexual minority WLH may experience barriers to HIV care. Cross-sectional baseline data was analyzed from a Canadian cohort study with WLH (sexual minority women [SMW]: n = 180; heterosexual women: n = 1240). SMW (median age 38 years, IQR 13) included bisexual (58.9%), lesbian (17.8%) and other sexualities (23.3%). In multivariable analyses adjusting for age, poverty, education, and ethnicity, SMW identity was associated with increased od

Sex Differences in Stroke Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcome.

OBJECTIVE: This article examines how sex and gender differences affect stroke recognition, treatment, and outcomes and identifies strategies to advance equity across the stroke care continuum. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Recent evidence highlights persistent sex-based and gender-based disparities in stroke care. Women are less likely to be identified by emergency services as having a stroke, largely because they have more frequent nonfocal presentations (eg, diffuse weakness, confusion). Standard prehospital tools often miss these signs. Although sex disparities in the administration of acute treatm

Disordered eating profiles and associations with student sociodemographic characteristics: a latent class analysis among adolescents in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Despite its importance to health and well-being, evidence on disordered eating (DE) patterns among Canadian adolescents remains limited. This study aimed to (1) identify latent DE classes among adolescents in Canada; and (2) investigate whether students' sociodemographic characteristics predict DE class membership. METHODS: Student-level survey data were obtained from the 2021-2022 COMPASS study. The sample included 24 639 students in grades 9 to 12 from 69 secondary schools in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Latent class analysis was applied to explore DE profiles based

Urban-Rural Health Transitions in India: A Comprehensive Review of Non-communicable Disease Trends and Risk Landscapes.

India is experiencing a dual burden of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors, with distinct patterns emerging across rural and urban geographies. While behavioral risks such as tobacco and alcohol use remain entrenched in rural settings, urban populations are disproportionately affected by metabolic risks such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. This review aims to synthesize national data to understand the geographic divergence of NCD risk factors and their implications for public health policy. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using data from the National Family Heal

AI in peer review: can artificial intelligence be an ally in reducing gender and geographical gaps in peer review? A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Gender and geographical disparities have been widely reported in the peer-review process of biomedical journals. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming the publishing system; however, its potential to identify suitable reviewers, and whether it might reduce, replicate or reinforce existing biases in peer review has never been comprehensively investigated. This study sought to determine the usefulness of AI in identifying expert scientists in medicine taking into consideration gender and geographical diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). METHODS: The title and a

Contextual factors and G6PD diagnostic testing: a scoping review and evidence and gap map.

BACKGROUND: Testing for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an important consideration regarding treatment for malaria. G6PD deficiency may lead to haemolytic anaemia during malaria treatment and, therefore, determining G6PD deficiency in malaria treatment strategies is extremely important. METHODS: This report presents the results of a scoping review and evidence and gap map for consideration by the Guideline Development Group for G6PD near patient tests to support radical cure of Plasmodium vivax. This scoping review has investigated common diagnostic tests for G6PD defic

Equity of maternal and child health services in Afghanistan: a spatiotemporal analysis of national survey datasets.

INTRODUCTION: Afghanistan's healthcare system faces geopolitical instability and inequities in maternal and child health (MCH) services, particularly associated with a temporary collapse in funding in 2021. We analysed coverage levels and spatiotemporal trends in sociodemographic inequalities in the country using data from the 2010/2011 and 2022/2023 Afghan Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys. METHODS: The study's primary outcome was an adapted Composite Coverage Index (CCI) that combined seven essential MCH interventions with corresponding inequality measures, evaluated using Slope Indices of

Gender disparities in delayed angina diagnosis: insights from 2001-2020 NHANES data.

BACKGROUND: Women with coronary artery disease (CAD) are more likely than men to experience a delay in diagnosis, which is attributed to differences in clinical presentation. The objective of this study is to examine any persistent disparities in timely CAD diagnosis in the United States (U.S.) among women who present with clinically similar symptoms and demographic characteristics to their male counterparts. METHODS: From the 2001 - 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, participants were categorized as having missed angina if they experienced angina and did not

Gender gap in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

Previous studies have shown less access to deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD) in women compared to men raising concer … tor and motor profiles. We advocate that more focus should be directed toward the implementation of gender equity as both genders benefit from DBS with equal clinical efficacy. This study provides Class II evidence of beneficial effects of DBS in women with PD compared to male controls.

Gender-sensitive and diversity-sensitive end-of-life care in Switzerland (GiveCare): a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care has been identified as one of the most inequitable areas of healthcare. In Switzerland, as globally, disparities in end-of-life care (EOLC) exist along socio-demographic lines, shaping the access to and quality of care received across services by patients and their caregivers. Research has linked these disparities to binary gender differences and other aspects of a person's social position. The GiveCare project aims to provide a systemic understanding of how aspects of gender and diversity intersect to shape the provision of EOLC in Switzerland and to translate th

Young men and young women in secure care: gender differences in the placement of those with mental health needs.

BACKGROUND: The system of secure care for young people in England and Wales comprises youth justice, welfare and mental health facilities. Empirical studies have failed to investigate the system as a whole. The National Adolescent Study in 2016 was the first to provide comprehensive system wide information. This paper, derived from that data set, addresses equity of service provision for young men and women in secure care who have mental health problems. METHODS: The detained census population of English young people in 2016 was 1322 and detailed data were available on 93% of this population,

Identifying sex- and gender-specific endocrinological, lifestyle, psychosocial, and socio-cultural targets for Alzheimer's disease prevention in Africans: The Female Brain Health and Endocrine Research in Africa (FemBER-Africa) project.

Dementia rates are rising globally, with the burden increasing most rapidly in low- to middle-income countries. Despite this, research into Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) among African populations remains limited, with existing models based on Western cohorts that overlook sex-, gender-, and ancestry-specific factors. The Female Brain Health and Endocrine Research in Africa (FemBER-Africa) project, hosted at the Brain and Mind Institute, Aga Khan University, Kenya, will establish a deeply phenotyped cohort of 250 African individuals across the ADRD spectrum. It will assess se

Navigating healthcare, managing life, or falling through the cracks? A theory-informed systematic review of the chronic burden faced by women with recurrent urinary tract infections.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) are often treated as discrete biomedical episodes, yet women experience them as chronic, disruptive, and stigmatized conditions. This systematic review synthesizes empirical evidence on women’s lived experiences of rUTIs, situating and evaluating findings against frameworks of chronic illness and gender. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched seven databases for studies on adult women with rUTIs (≥ 2 in 6 months OR ≥ 3 in 12 months) across healthcare navigation, emotional wellbeing, work, and family/relationships, published Janu

Race and gender disparities in mental health documentation in primary care: Findings from a video vignette experiment.

Unstructured clinical notes could be a key source for mental health detection and care in primary care settings. A growing use of LLMs to extract mental health indicators from unstructured clinical notes has the potential to aid in this effort. However, these technologies do not account for provider bias at the point of data entry. In this video vignette survey experiment study, we explore how mental health information in written clinical notes differ in frequency, content, and quality by patient race-gender presentation. Leveraging the strengths of an experimental design with 111 practicing h

Trans psychology amid anti-trans legislation in the United States.

This special issue highlights cutting-edge applications of psychological theory and science to the well-being and health of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (trans) people in the United States in the context of sweeping state and federal-level anti-trans legislation and executive actions. The 16 articles in this special issue demonstrate rigorous, creative, intersectional, and equity-focused approaches across multiple subdisciplines by psychologists working in numerous sectors and settings (e.g., higher education, health care, government) to promote the health and civil rights of tra

Demographic Disparities amongst Patients Receiving Carpal Tunnel Release: A Retrospective Review of 92,921 Patients.

UNLABELLED: Despite strong evidence supporting the efficacy of surgical release for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), previous studies have suggested that surgery is not performed equally amongst races and sex. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential socioeconomic disparities in the surgical treatment for CTS. METHODS: Adult patients (≥18) were identified in the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System database from 2011 to 2018 by diagnosis code for CTS. Why we march! Feminist activism in critical times: Lessons from the women's march on Washington.

As professors, we have witnessed, anecdotally, a shift in doing social justice advocacy teaching. We have witnessed within some of our classrooms a more empowered hostility and intolerance to conversations pertaining to social justice. We agree that this phenomenon is pedagogical because this language usage not only teaches, but also legitimizes hate speech. We have witnessed the illogical extension of this hate speech with an increase in hate crimes across the country since the 2016 election, Without peaceful protest and grassroots feminist activism, we fear that this speech, this pedagogy, w
