Needs, Challenges, and Opportunities for Genetic Counselors in Vietnam: A Qualitative Interview Study With Healthcare Leaders and Genetics Professionals.

In Vietnam, access to genetic testing has expanded rapidly, but the genetic counseling needed to translate genetic testing results into informed healthcare decisions remains limited. Currently, genetic counseling is provided by physicians or PhD-trained laboratory geneticists in Vietnam; there are no Master's-level trained genetic counselors or genetic counseling training programs. As such, significant gaps exist in the genetic counseling services offered to patients and families in Vietnam. To date, limited research has explored how to implement the profession of genetic counselors in Vietnam

Species barriers in AAV tropism: mechanisms, models, and emerging solutions for clinical translation.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors have become central to in vivo gene therapy across genetic and acquired diseases. Yet despite extensive preclinical validation, AAV programs often encounter translational gaps when advancing from rodents to non-human primates (NHPs) and ultimately to humans. These species barriers arise from differences in capsid-receptor interactions, intracellular trafficking, immune landscapes, and tissue microanatomy. Even within species, strain-level genetic variation can markedly alter vector performance, exemplified by the LY6A-dependent central nervous system (CNS)

Identifying the psychosocial barriers and facilitators associated with the uptake of genetic services for hereditary cancer syndromes: a systematic review of qualitative studies.

Despite evidence supporting genetic testing's utility in hereditary cancer risk management, uptake remains low among at-risk relatives of a hereditary cancer patient. The qualitative systematic review aims to identify the psychosocial barriers and facilitators associated with the uptake of genetic counselling services and/or genetic testing (GC/GT). A systematic literature search was performed across six databases in June 2023, limited to studies published in English from 2010 onwards. Qualitative studies interviewing hereditary cancer patients, their relatives, and/or healthcare providers to

When legal worlds collide: from research to treatment in hereditary cancer prevention.

This paper critically examines the legal and ethical dilemma in the institutionalization of a prevention and treatment technology on hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) in Finland. Current medical practice and legislation support the notion of non-directiveness in genetic counselling, patient autonomy and personal privacy. Clinical doctors in Finland, however, proposed that a research register of HNPCC carriers should be nationalized through a legal mandate, which would require all carriers to be identified on the basis of the mutation, but also provide a national healthcare and

Exploring experts' views on "Not Parent Expected" discoveries via direct-to-consumer DNA ancestry testing.

BACKGROUND: Millions of people have taken Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) DNA ancestry tests to learn more about their ethnic ancestry and family history. A small but growing body of research has noted that these DTC DNA ancestry tests raise challenging ethical, psychosocial, and resource-related issues that have not been adequately considered nor discussed. One key issue concerns a "Not Parent Expected" (NPE) discovery, in which a user suddenly and unexpectedly learns from these tests that an assumed parent (typically the father) is not a biological parent. Such news can negatively affect mental hea

Designing and optimizing AAV-mediated gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases: from bench to bedside.

Recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAVs) have emerged as an attractive tool for gene delivery, and demonstrated tremendous promise in gene therapy and gene editing-therapeutic modalities with potential "one-and-done" treatment benefits compared to conventional drugs. Given their tropisms for the central nervous system (CNS) across various species including humans, rAAVs have been extensively investigated in both pre-clinical and clinical studies targeting neurodegenerative disease. However, major challenges remain in the application of rAAVs for CNS gene therapy, such as suboptimal vector

Psychosocial impact on individuals who received negative test results from predictive testing for Huntington's disease: An exploratory qualitative study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease with autosomal dominant inheritance, and no radical cure for HD has been established. Qualitative studies are necessary to investigate the psychological state of individuals who underwent predictive testing for HD, because the psychosocial impact on noncarriers remains unclarified in Japan. Herein, we elucidated the psychosocial impact on the noncarriers for HD and the role of genetic counseling for predictive testing and follow-up after testing by examining their experiences with predictive testing. We conducted semi-structured intervie

Evolution and population genomics of the Lyme borreliosis pathogen, Borrelia burgdorferi.

Population genomic studies have the potential to address many unresolved questions about microbial pathogens by facilitating the identification of genes underlying ecologically important traits, such as novel virulence factors and adaptations to humans or other host species. Additionally, this framework improves estimations of population demography and evolutionary history to accurately reconstruct recent epidemics and identify the molecular and environmental factors that resulted in the outbreak. The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, exemplifies the power and promise of the applic

The genetics of skin fragility.

Genetic skin fragility manifests with diminished resistance of the skin and mucous membranes to external mechanical forces and with skin blistering, erosions, and painful wounds as clinical features. Skin fragility disorders, collectively called epidermolysis bullosa, are caused by mutations in 18 distinct genes that encode proteins involved in epidermal integrity and dermal-epidermal adhesion. The genetic spectrum, along with environmental and genetic modifiers, creates a large number of clinical phenotypes, spanning from minor localized lesions to severe generalized blistering, secondary ski

Genetic aspects of parkinsonism.

The genetic basis of many monogenic neurological diseases with parkinsonian features has been elucidated over the past few years. The clinical and genetic features are discussed for the diseases with prominent parkinsonian signs. There is also accumulating evidence for a role of genetic factors in the aetiology of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the approach to polygenic diseases is quite different from that to the simpler single-gene disorders. The role of epidemiology in not only establishing genetic susceptibility, but its impact on estimating the size of the problem, is also

Patient responses to genetic information: studies of patients with hereditary cancer syndromes identify issues for use of genetic testing in nephrology practice.

Advances in the genetic basis of kidney disease may mean that genetic testing is increasingly important in reducing disease morbidity and mortality among patients. However, there is little research examining patient responses to genetic information for Mendelian and common kidney diseases. Existing research on kidney and other hereditary cancer syndromes can inform three major issues relevant to the nephrology context as follows: (1) how patients understand their risk of disease after genetic counseling and testing, (2) their emotional responses to the information, and (3) their uptake of reco

The new genetics and women.

The U.S. Human Genome Project (HGP) is a federally funded effort to produce a detailed genetic and physical map of all human chromosomes. Because of their central role in reproduction and caregiving, women are likely to be affected differently, and more significantly, by the information the HGP generates. It is important to identify inequities that may emerge from gender differences and to consider ways in which they may be avoided, reduced, or overcome. Although this type of analysis is one of the goals of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues Program of the National Center for Human Genome R

The genetics of eating disorders.

The eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa traditionally have been viewed as sociocultural in origin. However, recent behavioral genetic findings suggest substantial genetic influence on these disorders. Molecular genetic research of these disorders is in its infancy, but initial results are promising. This article reviews findings from family, twin, and molecular genetic studies that support substantial genetic influences on disordered eating and highlights additional areas for future research.

Addressing underrepresentation in genomics research through community engagement.

The vision of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) is that people everywhere will realize the benefits of human genetics and genomics. Implicit in that vision is the importance of ensuring that the benefits of human genetics and genomics research are realized in ways that minimize harms and maximize benefits, a goal that can only be achieved through focused efforts to address health inequities and increase the representation of underrepresented communities in genetics and genomics research. This guidance is intended to advance community engagement as an approach that can be used acros

Do organisms need an impact factor? Citations of key biological resources including model organisms reveal usage patterns and impact.

Research resources like transgenic animals and antibodies are the workhorses of biomedicine, enabling investigators to relatively easily study specific disease conditions. As key biological resources, transgenic animals and antibodies are often validated, maintained, and distributed from university-based stock centers. As these centers heavily rely on grant funding, it is critical that they are cited by investigators so that usage can be tracked. However, unlike systems for tracking the impact of papers, the conventions and systems for tracking key resource usage and impact lag. Previous studi

Autosomal Recessive Cerebellar Ataxias: Translating Genes to Therapies.

Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias (ARCAs) represent over 200 clinically heterogeneous genetic conditions involving degeneration of the cerebellum and associated tracts with resultant impairment of balance and coordination. Advancements in genomic testing have enabled rapid identification of the majority of known recessive disorders, shifting research focus to the development of targeted mechanistic treatments addressing underlying physiological pathways. Molecular classification allows recognition of cellular, biochemical, and genetic targets for high-effect precision therapy development.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions and epigenetic aging in adults: Protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Aging is the strongest risk factor for most chronic diseases. The rising burden of an aging population and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), contributes to escalating costs for society. Several non-pharmaceutical interventions can lower the risk of NCDs, including common mental disorders (CMDs), and may slow down biological aging, as evidenced by outcome markers such as epigenetic clocks. However, a comprehensive overview of whether and which non-pharmaceutical interventions may impact human epigenetic aging is missing. Synthesizing evidence of interventions on epigenetic aging t
