IMPORTANCE: Accumulation of geriatric deficits, leading to an increased frailty state, makes patients susceptible for decline in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC).
OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of single and accumulated geriatric deficits with HRQOL decline in patients after treatment for HNC.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Between October 2014 and May 2016, patients at a tertiary referral center were included in the Oncological Life Study (OncoLifeS), a prospective data biobank, and followed up for 2 years. A consecutive series

Altered skin integrity increases the chance of infection, impaired mobility, and decreased function and may result in the loss of limb or, sometimes, life. Skin is affected by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors can include altered nutritional status, vascular disease issues, and diabetes. Extrinsic factors include falls, accidents, pressure, immobility, and surgical procedures. Ensuring skin integrity in the elderly requires a team approach and includes the individual, caregivers, and clinicians. The twenty-first century clinician has several online, evidence-based tools t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coercion in psychiatry is legally tolerated as a last resort. The reduction of the use of coercion is a shared goal of hospital administrators, medical and nursing staff and representatives of patients and families but requires the identification of risk factors for coercion. These risk factors in geriatric psychiatric inpatient settings are not well known, especially regarding seclusion. Through examining the prevalence of coercion and patients' characteristics, this study aims to identify risk factors for coercion in elderly people.
METHODS: The use of coercion in

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACTBackground:Delirium is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by disturbed consciousness, cognitive function, or perception and associated with serious adverse outcomes such as death, dementia, and the need for long-term care. However, recognition and management of delirium is poorly prioritized even though it is the most frequent complication among patients undergoing surgery following hip fracture. The aim of this study was to understand clinicians' from orthopedic speciality perceptions in relation to recognition, diagnosis, and management of delirium.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are at increased risk of multimorbidity compared to the general population. The goal of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of non-infectious comorbidities and geriatric syndromes in PLHIV ≥ 50 years old.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a cohort of PLHIV regularly followed at an outpatient clinic in a University Hospital in Spain, focusing on PLHIV aged 50 and above. Participants were categorized by age into ten-year intervals. Crude and standardized prevalence of each comorbidity and its trend across age groups were estimat

OBJECTIVES: Quality of life (QoL) of nursing home (NH) residents is critical, yet understudied, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to examine whether COVID-19 outbreaks, lack of access to geriatric professionals, and care aide burnout were associated with NH residents' QoL.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study (July to December 2021).
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We purposefully selected 9 NHs in Alberta, Canada, based on their COVID-19 exposure (no or minor/short outbreaks vs repeated or extensive outbreaks). We included data for 689 residents from 18 care units.

AIMS: This paper is an analysis to clarify the concept of attachment by: (1) specifying the antecedents of attachment in older adulthood, (2) describing the defining or critical attributes of attachment as relevant for development beyond adulthood, including older adulthood and old age, and (3) specifying the consequences of attachment in older adulthood.
BACKGROUND: Attachment is a concept that has been studied both within and outside the discipline of nursing. Most of the scholarly work on the concept has involved investigations of the concept as it applies at very early developmental phase

Problems in the foot develop as a result of the aging process or systemic disease. Common causes of pain and disability in the elderly are nail and skin problems, predominantly corns and calluses, along with circulatory and structural problems. Because patients with orthopaedic conditions may have preexisting foot problems, it is important for nurses to distinguish between minor foot problems that can easily be treated and more serious conditions that require referral to a specialist. This article discusses pathophysiology of the aging foot, a comprehensive foot assessment, common foot problem

Constipation is a major complaint of older adults. Approximately 30% of older adults use laxatives at least once weekly, and laxatives account for 1% of physician prescriptions in addition to approximately 700 over-the-counter preparations. This study evaluated the efficacy of a fiber and fluid nursing intervention on the maintenance of bowel movements and elimination aid withdrawal in residents of a long-term health care facility. The findings indicated that the number of bowel movements reached a peak at 3 months and returned to baseline values at the 6-month point while the use of both laxa

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the relationship between the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) and geriatric syndromes in acute-care hospitals.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed on 8,205 inpatients aged ≥ 65 years from November 1, 2016, to October 31, 2021. HFRS was determined using ICD-10 codes in the electronic medical records. Cognitive impairment, depression, polypharmacy, dysphagia, malnutrition, and pain were assessed by attending nurses within 48 h of admission.
RESULTS: The cohort consisted of 3,872 men and 4,333 women, averaging 74.4 and 75.4 years old, respecti

We assessed the accuracy and ease of use of the BladderScan (BVI 2000) portable ultrasound-based bladder volume measurement device in a geriatric outpatient population. The Geriatric Continence Clinic nurse and physician each made 73 measurements on 36 subjects. Although the correlation coefficients between the true and ultrasound measurements were highly significant the mean differences were significantly different from zero. We suggest that, rather than considering the correlation coefficient, the accuracy required of the device should be described by a function of estimated versus true blad

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common geriatric syndrome. However, there is a lack of primary data regarding the prevalence of delirium in German nursing homes. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of delirium and its motor subtypes, and to identify factors associated with the prevalence of delirium among residents of German nursing homes.
METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in German nursing homes. Trained nurses collected data over a two-week period in April 2024. The participants were recruited via random sampling. The inclusion criteria were as follows:

BACKGROUND: Rising hospitalization rates among older inpatients and their complex needs challenge traditional acute care models. Hospital-acquired complications and deconditioning remain major risks, especially when organizational constraints limit meaningful interactions. This qualitative study explored the perceived care needs for older inpatients and acceptability of Meaningful Activity Facilitators (MAFs) to address these needs in acute geriatric wards in France.
METHODS: Using a multiple data source approach, we conducted non-participatory field observations and semi-structured interview

BACKGROUND: Scabies represents a significant infection control challenge in geriatric care facilities. Traditional reactive strategies, such as isolating identified cases, have frequently proven inadequate in preventing recurrent outbreaks, underscoring the need for proactive, systematic approaches. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive, proactive intervention strategy in controlling nosocomial scabies transmission in a large specialized geriatric hospital.
METHOD: A before and after study was conducted, comparing a pre-intervention period (January 2021-December 20

For the first time in history, people age older than 65 years make up >20% of the non-metro population, compared with 16% of the metro population. From 2010 to 2020 the nonmetro population age older than 65 years grew by 22%, while the working-age population declined by 4.9%, and the population aged under 18 years declined by 5.7%. 1 , 2 Multidisciplinary geriatric surgical programs are an increasingly recognized approach to the care of older surgical patients and preliminary data suggest they can reduce length of stay. Although rural areas have the greatest proportion of patients age older th

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is prevalent among hospitalized older patients. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between nutritional status [assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and serum albumin levels] and adverse outcomes in hospitalized older patients. We also aimed to compare the predictive utility of our findings.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2016 and June 2020. In total, 808 older patients (aged ≥ 65 years, mean age 82.8 ± 6.70 years, 45.9% male) admitted to the acute geriatric unit were included in our sample

BACKGROUND: In most elderly people, the final-terminal-phase of life is characterized by permanent dependency and a complete inability to perform activities of daily living. Treatment targets usually switch from rehabilitation to palliation. However, the prevalence of the clinical judgment "last phase of life" and its association with in-hospital death is unknown in geriatric patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed GEMIDAS data from two geriatric units. Patients without cancer and an in-hospital stay of at least 1 week were included in our study. Prevalence of the terminal

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Age-Friendly Health Systems model has emerged as a geriatric care model focusing on the 4Ms: what matters, mobility, mentation, and medications. Representation of the 4Ms in interdisciplinary communication could have implications for outcomes including avoidable nursing home-to-hospital transfers. The objective of this article was to explore the association between the 4Ms found in text messages and avoidable transfer of residents with and without Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).
