[Flavonoids in the treatment of hypertension in geriatric patients].

BACKGROUND: Geriatric patients belong to a group over 65 years old. In general these patients present multiple chronic diseases and impairments with disability, body mass diminished and generalized fatigue. On the other hand, a high percentage of these patients have cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, several studies suggest that associated with drugs treatment consumption of natural products such as flavonoids, contribute to improve the quality of life of geriatric patients. The aim of this work is to review in literature the effect of flavonoids in vascular protection of older adults.

Urinary tract infections in the geriatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the second most common infection in geriatric population. This study investigated clinical findings, diagnostic approaches, complicating factors, prognosis, causative microorganisms and antimicrobial susceptibility in geriatric patients diagnosed with UTI. METHODS: A total of 140 hospitalised patients with UTIs were evaluated within three years between January 2011-January 2015 at the Eskisehir Yunus Emre State Hospital. UTI diagnosed when there were systemic and urinary signs and symptoms and a positive dipstick test and urine culture result, leu

[Neurosurgery in the elderly patient: Geriatric neurosurgery].

OBJECTIVE: Between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will double, and the number of people aged 80 and older will quadruple. Health professional training does not include instructions about specific care for older people. The World Health Organization maintains that all health providers should be trained on ageing issues. Thus, it is proposed to analyse the effect of ageing on Neurosurgery in our country. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective historical cohort study was performed on individuals age 70 years or older admitted to the Neurosurgery or the Intens

[Clostridium difficile infections in geriatric patients].

Clostridium difficile is the main cause of nosocomial antibiotic-associated diarrhea in adults in Europe and North America. Infections with C. difficile typically occur in elderly patients with comorbidities and prior antibiotic therapy. Other risk factors are proton pump inhibitors, which are taken by many elderly patients. The main virulence factors are toxins A and B. The clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic colonization to severe disease with abdominal complications and sepsis. The current diagnostic gold standard is anaerobic culture but is impractical in routine use due to the long

The Crossroads of Geriatric Cardiology and Cardio-Oncology.

Cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are two major causes of mortality in older adults. With improved survival and outcomes from cancer and CVD, the role of the geriatrician is evolving. Geriatricians provide key skills to facilitate patient-centered and value-based care in the growing older population of cancer patients (and survivors). Cancer treatment in older adults is particularly injurious with respect to complications stemming from cancer therapy and as well as to CVD related to cancer therapy in the context of physiologic aging. To best meet their natural potential as caregiving lea

Hematologic issues in the geriatric surgical patient.

Geriatric patients are at higher risk for hemorrhagic complications after surgery and traumatic injuries. The geriatric population is more likely to take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. Chronic disease, autoimmune disease, and nutritional deficiencies can lead to coagulation factor and platelet disorders. One must be familiar with the current anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, their mechanism of action, and reversal agents to properly care for this group of patients. The new oral anticoagulants do not have Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved reversal agents, but kno

Blood pressure measurement in the geriatric population.

As the population above 60 years of age is the fastest growing and hypertension is highly prevalent in this group, accurate blood pressure (BP) measurement in the elderly is a very important and widely applicable subject. As with any other population, an accurate measurement of BP is essential to plan therapy and this remains an important consideration in the elderly as well. There are some unique problems of BP measurement in the elderly, including drug-induced orthostatic hypotension, white-coat hypertension, and advanced atherosclerotic disease with stiff arteries. For clinical use, home bl

Comprehensive geriatric assessment in the emergency department.

Changing global demography is resulting in older people presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in greater numbers than ever before. They present with greater urgency and are more likely to be admitted to hospital or re-attend and utilize greater resources. They experience longer waits for care and are less likely to be satisfied with their experiences. Not only that, but older people suffer poorer health outcomes after ED attendance, with higher mortality rates and greater dependence in activities of daily living or rates of admission to nursing homes. Older people's assessment and manageme

[Lipid lowering therapy in geriatric patients].

Cardiovascular disease is also the most frequent cause of mortality in the elderly population. Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are performed at an increasing rate in older patients in order to maintain functional capacities and, thus, an adequate quality of life. Thus, strategies to prevent cardiovascular events (e.g., lipid lowering therapy) are also of great importance in elderly. With respect to the side effects of statin therapy, the risk of drug interaction has to be considered, as well as myopathy. Discrepant study results exist about the influence of statins on cogniti

Socio-demographic Factors of Geriatric Depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental health problem in geriatric population and the overall prevalence rate of depression in this age group varies between 10 and 20%. OBJECTIVE: To study the socio-demographic factors associated with depression in geriatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was done on 74 community-based mental health surveys on depression in geriatric population, which were conducted in the continents of Asia, Europe, Australia, North America, and South America. All the studies were conducted between 1955 and 2005. The researchers had included only

[Treatments of geriatric femoral intertrochanteric fractures].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment method of senile patients with femoral intertrochanteric fractures and its clinical outcomes. METHODS: From January 2005 to December 2007, 192 senile patients with femoral intertrochanteric fractures were treated, including 85 males and 107 females aged 65-92 years old (average 75 years old). The injury was caused by fall on walking in 106 cases, fall when riding a bicycle in 55 cases, and traffic accidents in 31 cases. According to Evans classification, there were 12 cases of type I A, 43 cases of type I B, 29 cases of type II, 24 cases of type III A,

Considerations on the use of oxymorphone in geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Pain among the elderly is pervasive, under-treated and can be properly managed by judiciously using analgesics in the armamentarium. For severe pain, opioids generally provide the most effective pain relief, but concerns about safety and tolerability have limited, often unnecessarily, their utilization in the geriatric population. OBJECTIVE: It is common for geriatric patients to be taking more than one medicine. Oxymorphone might be particularly well suited for use in geriatric patients, in that its metabolism is mainly through non-CYPP450 pathways, thereby posing less risk of in
