The authors conducted a follow-up study of 78 patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. Four of the patients were in spontaneous remission; 59 patients taking haloperidol showed an average improvement of 79.3% and the remaining patients, 3 of whom were taking medication other than haloperidol and 12 of whom were not taking any medication, showed an average improvement of 24.7%. Side effects were the main cause of discontinuing haloperidol. The authors found that response to haloperidol was unrelated to family history of tics, age at onset, type or severity of symptoms, or signs of organi

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) are widely produced and persist in aquatic ecosystems, yet their indirect effects on host-microbe interactions remain poorly defined. By using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a sentinel species, this study investigated the effects of subchronic 5 mg/L TiO2-NP exposure. Dynamic light scattering was utilized to characterize the bimodal aggregates (peaks at 917 and 46,841 nm; surface charge: +22.08 mV) that define the environmental state of TiO2-NPs. Parallel 16S rRNA metagenomic profiling on Day 6, prior to mortality, revealed profound gut dysbiosis. A marked

Coprolalia and echophenomena repeated in the patients' mind (CTPh-cognitive tic-like phenomena) have been rarely recognized as part of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) symptomatology and their assignment to tics, OCD or other psychopathologies has not been settled. The aim of the paper was to assess the incidence and clinical associations of CTPh in GTS, and to establish if CTPh belong to the tic spectrum. We performed a prospective, one-registration study on a cohort of 227 consecutive patients with GTS. CTPh were diagnosed during the interview and defined as brief, sudden, involuntary th

Advances in analytical methods have enabled the detection of emerging contaminants at ever lower concentrations in freshwaters. However, such measurements need to be linked to effect-based assays to identify risks. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) forms part of a chemical's environmental risk assessment (ERA), and current regulatory testing guidelines to calculate fish BCFs use hundreds of fish per chemical. Due to ethical concerns a reduction in the numbers of animals used is desired, and there is a need to identify in vitro or in silico alternatives which meet regulatory acceptance. This st

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the presence of motor and vocal tics as well as psychiatric comorbidities such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and anxiety. The underlying cause of the disease is still unknown, but several lines of evidence suggest a paramount role of the dopaminergic system. Based on the clinical observation that cannabis-based medicine including cannabis and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, dronabinol) may improve TS, alternatively, an involveme

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a chronic tic disorder characterised by the presence of multiple motor and vocal tics with onset during development. Tics are the most common hyperkinetic symptoms in childhood and co-morbid behavioural conditions (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, affective symptoms, and impulsivity) are present in the majority of patients. Although GTS is no longer considered a rare medical curiosity, its exact pathophysiology remains elusive. Recent research on the brain correlates of the subjective 'urge to tic' h
