The Silent Risk of Sudan Virus: A Review Addressing Global Health Vulnerabilities.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) is a deadly hemorrhagic fever caused by the Sudan virus, first discovered in Sudan in 1976. This disease has been linked to several outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Uganda. The high fatality rate of SVD, ranging from 41% to 70%, emphasizes the critical need for effective preventive measures and treatments. This perspective piece focuses on the challenges faced by low-income countries in handling SVD, focusing on Uganda's 2025 epidemic and the ongoing global efforts to develop vaccines and therapies. DISCUSSION: SVD spreads primaril

Advances in nanomaterial vaccine strategies to address infectious diseases impacting global health.

Despite the overwhelming success of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases, there remain numerous globally devastating diseases without fully protective vaccines, particularly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), malaria and tuberculosis. Nanotechnology approaches are being developed both to design new vaccines against these diseases as well as to facilitate their global implementation. The reasons why a given pathogen may present difficulties for vaccine design are unique and tied to the co-evolutionary history of the pathogen and humans, but there are common challenges that nanotechnology

The Global Problem of Insufficient Sleep and Its Serious Public Health Implications.

Good sleep is necessary for good physical and mental health and a good quality of life. Insufficient sleep is a pervasive and prominent problem in the modern 24-h society. A considerable body of evidence suggests that insufficient sleep causes hosts of adverse medical and mental dysfunctions. An extensive literature search was done in all the major databases for "insufficient sleep" and "public health implications" in this review. Globally, insufficient sleep is prevalent across various age groups, considered to be a public health epidemic that is often unrecognized, under-reported, and that h

Social responsibility and global health: lessons from the Rio Olympics Zika controversy.

BACKGROUND: Identification of antigens by immunoblotting techniques, using epidermal and dermal extracts, is regarded as essential for making a definitive diagnosis in autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs). These procedures involve epidermal-dermal separation for subsequent protein extraction, which may result in partial loss of some antigenic polypeptides and changes in the conformational epitopes targeted by autoantibodies in AIBDs. It may therefore be necessary to use different substrates for consistent results. Objectives To evaluate the usefulness of human placental amnion extract as a subs

Chronic refractory myofascial pain and denervation supersensitivity as global public health disease.

Chronic pain with a 30.3% global prevalence significantly impacts universal health. Low back pain has a 9.4% prevalence worldwide causing the most widespread disability. Neck pain ranks 4th highest regarding years lived with disability with a 4.9% prevalence worldwide. The principal cause of pain in 85% of patients visiting a tertiary pain clinic has a myofascial origin. The root cause is multifocal neuromuscular ischaemia at myofascial trigger points from muscle tightening and shortening following spondylotic radiculopathy induced partial denervation. Chronic refractory myofascial pain (CRMP)

Strengthening global health security by developing capacities to deploy medical countermeasures internationally.

In 2014, the United States in partnership with international organizations and nearly 30 partner countries launched the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) to accelerate progress to improve prevention, detection, and response capabilities for infectious disease outbreaks that can cause public health emergencies. Objective 9 of the GHSA calls for improved global access to medical countermeasures and establishes as a target the development of national policy frameworks for sending and receiving medical countermeasures from and to international partners during public health emergencies. The term…
