Although interactions of Toxoplasma gondii with host cells have been studied extensively in vitro, relatively little is known about the initial interactions of Toxoplasma with mucosal surfaces in vivo. We therefore studied the onset of a Toxoplasma infection in guinea pig conjunctiva. Toxoplasma were inoculated onto the conjunctival epithelium. Prevention of NiSO4 induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) using ZnSO4 in drinking water was studied in a guinea pig model. In this paper we firstly report the inhibitory effect of nesosteine, a mucolytic drug, on Herxheimer microshock in guinea-pigs. Nesosteine (5-50 mg/kg) is able to protect sensitized animals from ovalbumin-induced bronchospasm. On the other hand, the drug is ineffective against the bronchospasm induced by histamine and acetylcholine. Myoclonus could not be induced in rats with either L-5-HTP alone or hypoxia. Following amine depletion or destruction of the serotonin neurons with 5,7-DHT, myoclonus appeared as part of a complex serotonergic behavioral syndrome induced by serotonin agonists. School attendance records of all primary schools in a guinea worm-endemic village in southwestern Nigeria were examined to determine the cause of missed school days and school drop-outs. At the time of the survey, 1,495 pupils (768 boys and 727 girls were registered in the 4 primary schools in the village, of which 21% of the pupils were infected with guinea worm disease (GWD). In 20 guinea pigs the relation between the electrode position on the cochlear surface and the recorded potentials was studied. We found the greatest AP amplitudes at the free lateral part of the cochlea; AP amplitudes decreased when the electrode was moved into the direction of the attachment of the cochlea to the petrous bone. As reports of contact dermatitis in humans due to acrylate compounds have increased considerably in recent years, it was decided to investigate the ability of these chemicals to evoke contact sensitivity skin reactions in guinea pigs. 21 different acrylate and methacrylate compounds were scanned for their ability to induce contact sensitivity, using 5 different sensitization protocols. The effects of morphine on the terminal bile duct (terminal cavity and ampulla) and gallbladder were investigated in vitro. The effects of atropine, 2 mg/kg i.v., on anaphylactic shock were studied in guinea-pigs sensitized to ovalbumin. A rodent model for human Lassa fever was developed which uses inbred (strain 13) and outbred (Hartley) guinea pigs. Strain 13 guinea pigs were uniformly susceptible to lethal infection by 2 or more PFU of Lassa virus strain Josiah. In contrast, no more than 30% of the Hartley guinea pigs died regardless of the virus dose. Respiratory function was measured in guinea pigs exposed for one hour to submicrometer oil mists. Five oils were used: medicinal grade mineral oil, laboratory grade paraffin oil, light lubricating oil, unused motor oil and used motor oil. The last three oils were also studied after having been reacted with sulfur dioxide. No alterations were produced by exposure to any of the oils at concentrations of 10 or 40 mg/m3. The effect of ethacrynic acid on the motor function of guinea pig ileum was studied in vitro. Ethacrynic acid produced dose-related (5-160 microgram/ml) contractions in this tissue. Morphine, tetrodotoxin and sodium-free medium prevented the contractions while hexamethonium, diphenhydramine, methysergide or indomethacin did not.
