Corticocortical projections to the prefrontal cortex in the rhesus monkey investigated with horseradish peroxidase techniques.

The corticocortical afferents innervating the prefrontal cortex in the monkey were studied by means of the retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. After injection of small amounts (0.3-0.5 microliter) of this enzyme into various parts of the prefrontal cortex, many labeled neurons (mostly pyramids of 15-25 microns in diameter) were found in various cortical regions of the ipsilateral hemisphere. A small part of the prefrontal cortex received fibers from other parts of the same cortex. For example, area 8 receives many fibers from both the rostral part of area 9 and a small area

Language function, foot of the third frontal gyrus, and rolandic operculum.

Two cases with expressive speech disorders were studied neuropsychologically and neurologically; anatomical and histopathological examinations were performed in both cases. In case 1, a small infarction in the foot of the left third frontal gyrus (F3) produced only transient word-finding difficulties that did not recur after a second stroke with lesion of the symmetrical zone in the right hemisphere. A transient, predominantly articulatory difficulty was observed in case 2; this was thought to be associated with a small infarction in the lower motor strip, including the Rolandic operculum. On

Molecular mechanisms of electroconvulsive therapy modulates excitation-inhibition balance in major depression disorder.

BACKGROUND: The excitation-inhibition (E/I) imbalance is a major pathological characteristic of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, whether/how electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) modulates neuronal homeostasis or E/I balance in MDD and its molecular basis is still largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, longitudinal rs-fMRI data from 46 patients with MDD receiving ECT and 46 healthy controls were included. The Hurst index was used to characterize the E/I balance, and mixed-effects model was constructed to assess the interactive effects of ECT on the Hurst index and functional connectivity

Disruption of the claustrum-ACC pathway contributes to human mind blanking.

The claustrum is a highly connected structure hypothesized to orchestrate conscious experience, yet its role in humans remains enigmatic. To address this question, we prospectively investigated patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) implantation driven by clinical indications, with electrode trajectories optimized to target the claustrum. Across the eight participants, the stimulated claustrum was left-sided in six and right-sided in two. Focal stimulation of the left claustrum reproducibly induced a transient arrest of ongoing thought and a red

Electroacupuncture Relieves Neuropathic Pain by Suppressing ACC Pyramidal Activity via mGluR5 Inhibition in CCI Mice.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is widely used for analgesia, but its central mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated whether EA alleviates neuropathic pain by suppressing metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) signaling in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). METHODS: In naïve mice, we manipulated ACC pyramidal neurons using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors encoding calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII)-driven opsins-channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) or halorhodopsin (NpHR3.0)-followed by blue- or yellow-light stimulation to assess behavioral responses. Maternal Depression, Childhood Resting-State Brain Connectivity, and Adolescent Depression During the COVID-19 Outbreak.

Adolescents of mothers with a history of depression are at increased risk for developing depression themselves. These adolescents may have been especially vulnerable to depression under conditions of stress, such as the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand the complex processes involved in the transmission of maternal depression risk to adolescent offspring in the context of stress, we examined potential mediating and moderating factors that link maternal depression history and offspring depressive symptoms, including resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and mothers' depr

Variability and Magnitude of Choline Levels Across the Psychosis Spectrum: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Animal, post-mortem, and pharmacological studies suggest altered choline levels in psychosis. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) may allow in vivo investigation of the cholinergic system. This meta-analysis examined the magnitude and variability of 1H-MRS choline across the psychosis spectrum. STUDY DESIGN: Following a pre-registered protocol (CRD42023403879), we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO for studies reporting 1H-MRS choline levels in individuals with psychosis, clinical high risk (CHR) states, and healthy controls. A modified FLIT-B model of trigeminal neuralgia reveals anterior cingulate cortex involvement in anxiety-like behavior in mice.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating orofacial pain disorder characterized by paroxysmal, lancinating pain and prominent affective comorbidities. Increasing evidence suggests that chronic TN involves abnormal plasticity in supraspinal pain circuits. However, the lack of animal models that faithfully recapitulate key clinical features of TN has limited mechanistic investigations of these central processes. Here, building upon our previously established foramen lacerum impingement of the trigeminal nerve root (FLIT) model, we developed an improved glass bead-based version (FLI

How can the research on cortical topography and connectivity fingerprint shed light on the neural processing of event segmentation? - A commentary on Wu et al. (2025).

The angular gyrus (AG) is widely implicated in language, memory, multisensory perception, and has been found to be a hub of connectivity. However, different strands of research on AG functions and structures have seldom been integrated. Recent event segmentation research, including Wu et al. (2025), shows that the AG robustly encodes event boundaries during spoken narratives, with stronger and more reliable involvement than the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). This commentary situates such findings within broader insights from connectomic fingerprints and cortical topography - using the contr

Astrocyte Activation in the ACC Contributes to Comorbid Anxiety in Chronic Inflammatory Pain and Involves in The Excitation-Inhibition Imbalance.

Neurons within the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) orchestrate the co-occurrence of chronic pain and anxiety. The ACC hyperactivity plays a crucial role in the emotional impact of neuropathic pain. Astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammatory is responsible for regulating the balance between excitation-inhibition (E/I) in the brain. However, there is limited understanding of the possible contributions of astrocytes in the ACC to comorbidity of anxiety and chronic inflammatory pain. This paper aims to investigate the possible contribution of astrocytes in the ACC to the comorbidity between anxiety and

Involvement of the cingulate cortex and insula in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: A clinical and volumetric study.

AIM: Advanced neuroimaging strategies may provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The objective of this study is to measure central pain centers in patients with long-standing trigeminal neuralgia and compare them to those of normal individuals. The findings of this study could improve the understanding of central region changes related to pain and improve the diagnosis and management of chronic trigeminal pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined radiologic data from 20 patients with trigeminal neuralgia and 28 healthy controls who underwent 3D iso T1-

Effect of ketamine on task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging findings in major depressive disorder: A mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, ketamine has gained significant interest in psychiatry as a potential treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), especially in individuals who are resistant to traditional therapies or are at a high risk of suicide. Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can provide insight into how ketamine alters brain function and contributes to its antidepressant properties. METHODS: This mini-review followed the MOOSE guidelines for systematic reviews of observational studies. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, a

Distraction and cognitive control independently impact parietal and prefrontal response to pain.

Previous studies have found that distracting someone through a challenging activity leads to hypoalgesia, an effect mediated by parietal and prefrontal processes. Other studies suggest that challenging activities affect the ability to regulate one's aching experiences, due to the partially common neural substrate between cognitive control and pain at the level of the medial prefrontal cortex. We investigated the effects of distraction and cognitive control on pain by delivering noxious stimulations during or after a Stroop paradigm (requiring high cognitive load) or a neutral condition. We fou

Effects of High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Targeting the Anterior Cingulate Cortex on the Pain Thresholds: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The majority of existing clinical studies used active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over superficial areas of the pain neuromatrix to regulate pain, with conflicting results. Few studies have investigated the effect of tDCS on pain thresholds by focusing on targets in deep parts of the pain neuromatrix. METHODS: This study applied a single session of high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) targeting the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and used a parallel and sham-controlled design to compare the antinociceptive effects in healthy individuals by assessing changes in pain th

A comparative study of posterior cingulate metabolism in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease.

Few comparative studies have assessed metabolic brain changes in cognitive impairment among neurodegenerative disorders, and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is a metabolically active brain region with high involvement in multiple cognitive processes. Therefore, in this study, metabolic abnormalities of the PCC were compared in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Parkinson's disease (PD) or Alzheimer's disease (AD), as examined by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Thirty-eight patients with idiopathic PD, including 20 with mild cognitive impairment (PDMCI) a

Sex-specific differences in resting-state functional brain activity in pediatric concussion.

Pediatric concussion has a rising incidence and can lead to long-term symptoms in nearly 30% of children. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) disturbances are a common pathological feature of pediatric concussion, though no studies have explicitly examined sex-differences with respect to this outcome, precluding a sex-specific understanding of the functional neuropathology of pediatric concussion. Therefore, we performed a secondary data analysis of rs-fMRI data collected on children with concussion (n = 29) recruited from in a pediatric hospital setting, with greater

Rostral Anterior Cingulate Cortex Oscillatory Power Indexes Treatment-Resistance to Multiple Therapies in Major Depressive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: High rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) activity is proposed as a nonspecific prognostic marker for treatment response in major depressive disorder, independent of treatment modality. However, other studies report a negative association between baseline high rACC activation and treatment response. Interestingly, these contradictory findings were also found when focusing on oscillatory markers, specifically rACC-theta power. An explanation could be that rACC-theta activity dynamically changes according to number of previous treatment attempts and thus is mediated by level of

Changes in cerebral connectivity and brain tissue pulsations with the antidepressant response to an equimolar mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide: an MRI and ultrasound study.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) has recently emerged as a potential fast-acting antidepressant but the cerebral mechanisms involved in this effect remain speculative. We hypothesized that the antidepressant response to an Equimolar Mixture of Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide (EMONO) would be associated with changes in cerebral connectivity and brain tissue pulsations (BTP). Thirty participants (20 with a major depressive episode resistant to at least one antidepressant and 10 healthy controls-HC, aged 25-50, only females) were exposed to a 1-h single session of EMONO and followed for 1 week. We defined response a
