Brain asymmetry and autonomic conditioning: sensitization control.

In the present experiment we report effects of cerebral asymmetry, or laterality, during classical conditioning to facial emotional stimuli. Twenty-five female subjects were presented with slides of a happy face in one visual half-field (VHF), and simultaneously a slide of an angry face in the other VHF, followed by shock as the unconditioned stimulus (UCS). To control for effects of sensitization, a new stimulus, never associated with the UCS, was introduced in the extinction phase. Dependent measures were phasic heart rate responses (HR) and skin conductance responses (SCR). The HR results s

Additional considerations in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of obsessional ruminations--a case study.

The cognitive-behavioral treatment of a 24-year-old woman with moderately severe obsessional ruminations is described. The case demonstrates both the effectiveness and limitations of exposure with response prevention techniques for obsessive-compulsive disorder. The client's response raises questions about the clinical utility of viewing obsessions exclusively as conditioned anxiety stimuli. In addition, the case shows that cognitions related to control rather than appraisals of responsibility were instrumental in initiating neutralising activity. Further modification of the current cognitive-

Habituation to chemosensory stimuli in the rat fetus: effects of endogenous kappa opioid activity.

On Day 21 of gestation, rat fetuses respond to chemosensory stimuli by expressing stereotypic facial wiping behavior. A series of 4 experiments was conducted to investigate (a) the influence of morphine on fetal responsiveness to a single chemosensory infusion, (b) the effect of naloxone blockade of endogenous opioid activity on diminished fetal responsiveness over a series of chemosensory infusions, (c) the effect of endogenous opioids on the recovery of fetal responsiveness to infusion after various dishabituation procedures, and (d) the influence of selective mu and kappa opioid receptor an

Memory effects of the combination of medazepam with nootropic agents.

Experiments were made on rats using step-through passive avoidance method to study the effect of the benzodiazepine medazepam (Mz) on the retention of the memory traces during tests on the 3rd hour, 24th hour and 7th day after training, as well as the influencing of this effect by the nootropic agents meclofenoxate (Mf), aniracetam (Anc) and Euclidan (Eucl.). All substances tested (Mz in a dose of 5 mg/kg weight, Mf - 100 mg/kg, Anc and Eucl - 50 mg/kg), applied both independently and in combination, were administered orally for six days prior to the training. Mz was found to impair the retent

Experimental motion sickness induced in squirrel monkeys by continuous off-axis horizontal rotation.

Under a variety of experimental conditions, nonrestrained adult male squirrel monkeys were subjected to continuous rotation in the horizontal plane at 33 rpm. Severity of motion-induced sickness was quantified by measuring latencies of three responses associated with sickness. Per- and postrotational nystagmus was recorded from a subsample of monkeys with permanent recording electrodes implanted in the bony orbits. Incidence of sickness depended on the time limits of stimulation imposed, and it occurred in a maximum of about 90 per cent of test sessions if rotation was continued for two hours.

Behavioral characteristics of vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain).

A group of vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain--DI) and a group of normal Long-Evans rats were successively evaluated on visual discrimination, olfactory discrimination, delayed alternation at short and long intertrial intervals (ITIs), approach-avoidance conflict in a straight runway, and open-field behavior. It was found that DI rats adapted more slowly than normal rats in the T-maze, in the straight runway, and they were slower to emerge into the open field. The DI rats were impaired relative to normal animals on the discrimination tasks (visual and olfactory), but they were not

Experimentally Induced Post-Event Rumination Alters Biological Stress Response Patterns to Repeated Stress.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination-the repetitive negative thinking about stressful events-impairs biological stress system activity. However, its impact on the habituation of stress responses, particularly of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, remains understudied. This study examined how post-event rumination affects the habituation of biological responses to repeated stress. METHODS: In this randomized experimental study, 47 participants were assigned to a rumination or control condition and exposed to two consecutive stress tasks. After the first stress

Cerebrolysin enhances the expression of the synaptogenic protein LRRTM4 in the hippocampus and improves learning and memory in senescent rats.

Aging reduces the efficiency of the organs and systems, including the cognitive functions. Brain aging is related to a decrease in the vascularity, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity. Cerebrolysin, a peptide and amino acid preparation, has been shown to improve the cognitive performance in animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Similarly, the leucine-rich repeat transmembrane 4 protein exhibits a strong synaptogenic activity in the hippocampal synapses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the cerebrolysin treatment on the learning and memory abilities, sensorimotor functions,

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the left temporal pole restores normal visual evoked potential habituation in interictal migraineurs.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging data has implicated the temporal pole (TP) in migraine pathophysiology; the density and functional activity of the TP were reported to fluctuate in accordance with the migraine cycle. Yet, the exact link between TP morpho-functional abnormalities and migraine is unknown. Here, we examined whether non-invasive anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) ameliorates abnormal interictal multimodal sensory processing in patients with migraine. METHODS: We examined the habituation of visual evoked potentials and median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP)

Chirp stimulation: H-response short and dynamic.

BACKGROUND: Migraine patients have an increased photic-driving response. This 'H-response' (HR) has potential diagnostic value but it is time consuming. AIM: The aim of the study was to establish a fast and standardized test for the study of migraine biology and treatment. METHODS: We studied 11 migraine patients and 11 matched control participants. We used stroboscope flashes with a 'chirp'-like linear frequency-increase from 10 to 40 Hz. EEG was recorded from occipital electrodes. Power spectral density was calculated for the stimulus response and corrected for baseline. An HR-estimator wa

Diminished aversive classical conditioning in pathological gamblers.

AIMS: Impaired ability to form associations between negative events in gambling and aversive somatic reactions may be a predisposing factor for pathological gambling. The current study investigated whether a group of pathological gamblers and a control group differed in aversive classical conditioning. DESIGN: A differential aversive classical conditioning paradigm, which consisted of three phases. In the habituation phase, one 850-Hz tone stimulus and one 1500-Hz tone stimulus were presented three times each in random order. In the acquisition phase, the two tones were presented 10 times eac

Repetition of suicide attempts across episodes of severe depression. Behavioural sensitisation found in suicide group but not in controls.

BACKGROUND: Those who die by suicide and suffer from depression are known to have made more suicide attempts during their life-span as compared to other people with depression. A behavioural sensitisation or kindling model has been proposed for suicidal behaviour, in accordance with a sensitisation model of depressive episodes. The aim of the present study was to test such a model by investigating the distribution of initial and repeated suicide attempts across the depressive episodes in suicides and controls with a unipolar severe depression. METHOD: A blind record evaluation was performed o

Changes of behavioral parameters during long-term food restriction in middle-aged Wistar rats.

Food restriction (FR) has a beneficial effect on aging process and exerts a significant effect on the responses of rodents to standard behavioral tasks. The aim of this study was to assess the cumulative influence of FR on the behavioral and biochemical parameters in Wistar rats. Six-month-old rats were subjected to restrictive feeding (50% of the daily food intake, every-other-day feeding regimen) for one month or for six months until ages of 7 and 12months, respectively. We examined the habituation of exploratory movement, amphetamine (AMPH)-induced motor activity, as well as changes in seru

Paradoxical shortening of sympathetic skin response latency at distal recording sites.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate and to discuss the neurophysiological mechanism of paradoxical shortening of the sympathetic skin response (SSR) latency at distal recording sites. METHODS: The latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of SSRs evoked by magnetic stimuli were analyzed. Eight active electrodes were placed on the palmar (anterior) and dorsal (posterior) sides of the hand (forearm) proximal to the distal arrangement. RESULTS: SSRs from two palm sites had significantly shorter latencies and larger amplitudes than the SSRs at the other six sites, including the prox

Habituation of the auditory startle response in cervical dystonia and Parkinson's disease.

The auditory startle response (ASR) is a brainstem reflex elicited by an unexpected acoustic stimulus. In focal dystonia (FD), the excitability of brainstem neurons is abnormally enhanced. To identify a possible impact of this pathology on the processing of acoustic stimuli, we studied the habituation of the ASR in patients (n = 11) with FD and compared the findings to those of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD; n = 11) and controls (n = 11). Latencies in FD patients did not differ from those of controls but were delayed in PD patients compared to controls (p < 0.0001). Habituation was nor

Appraisal process in sheep (Ovis aries): interactive effect of suddenness and unfamiliarity on cardiac and behavioral responses.

Appraisal theories state that an emotion results from an individual's evaluation of a stimulating event, which is based on a set of criteria. Each criterion triggers specific expressions that can be modulated by the outcome of other criteria. The authors analyzed the effects of the criteria of suddenness, unfamiliarity, and their combination on behavioral and cardiac responses in lambs (Ovis aries). Lambs were exposed to a visual stimulus that appeared either rapidly or slowly and was either unfamiliar or familiar. Suddenness induced a startle response and an increase in heart rate. Unfamiliar

Habituation in a simple repetitive motor task: a study with movement-related cortical potentials.

OBJECTIVE: The movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) attenuates over the right hemisphere during the performance of a complex motor sequence. Because subjects have to learn complex sequences, earlier research has attributed this decrease of negativity to motor learning. The aims of this study were (1) to examine whether such an attenuation also occurs in the course of a repetitive motor task so simple that learning is not required, and (2) whether there are any transfer effects when subjects change from one to the other hand. METHODS: MRCPs were recorded in 33 right-handed healthy subjec

Prepulse inhibition deficits in patients with panic disorder.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is an operational measure of sensorimotor gating that is reduced in several neuropsychiatric disorders that are characterized by deficits in inhibition or gating of intrusive or irrelevant stimuli. Clinically, panic disorder (PD) patients have been described as having difficulties in inhibition of responding to sensory and cognitive events. Because such difficulties may be due to failures in early stages of information processing, we examined PPI in patients with PD. Acoustic startle reactivity, habituation, and PPI (30-, 60-, 120-, 240-, and 2,000-ms interstimulus in
