Effect of photodynamic therapy in the reduction of halitosis in patients with multiple sclerosis: clinical trial.

Smell and odours play a vital role in social interaction. Halitosis is a social problem that affects one third of the population, causing a negative impact on the quality of life. There is little knowledge on the prevalence and management of halitosis in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The present study aims to evaluate the presence of halitosis in patients with MS when compared to a control group, and also evaluate treatment of the problem with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). This is a case-control clinical study in which 60 patients were evaluated: 30 MS patients in treatment at…

Haldane, hot dogs, halitosis, and hypoxic vasodilation: the emerging biology of the nitrite anion.

While it has long been known that the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide (NO) forms iron-nitrosyl-myoglobin and is the basis of meat curing, a greater biological activity of the nitrite anion has only recently been appreciated. In the stomach, NO is formed from acidic reduction of nitrite and increases mucous barrier thickness and gastric blood flow (see the related study beginning on page 106). Nitrite levels in blood reflect NO production from endothelial NO synthase enzymes, and recent data suggest that nitrite contributes to blood flow regulation by reaction with deoxygenated hemoglobin

From dysbiotic gut to malodorous mouth: targeting microbial metabolism for gastrointestinal type halitosis.

This article reviews the microbiological mechanisms of halitosis, the oral-gut axis, the role of the gut microbiome, related metabolic pathways, and their associations with gastrointestinal diseases, and explores intervention strategies based on microbial regulation. Halitosis is primarily caused by volatile sulfur compounds produced by oral microorganisms, especially gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, and volatile organic compounds in most extraoral etiologies. Studies have found that intestinal microbial dysregulation can affect the composition of oral flora through the oral-gut axis and aggr…

Extraoral halitosis in functional dyspepsia and its association with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and extraoral halitosis are often observed in functional dyspepsia (FD). We aimed to identify their associations for the first time. In this study, extraoral halitosis was diagnosed and assessed through the organoleptic score (OLS). Total symptom score (TSS) of FD, SIBO, gastricHelicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection, and three exhaled volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) (hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS)), were evaluated. Finally, 63 non-halitosis patients and 45 halitosis patients with extraoral halitosis were identified…

The tongue biofilm metatranscriptome identifies metabolic pathways associated with the presence or absence of halitosis.

Intra-oral halitosis usually results from the production of volatile sulfur compounds, such as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide, by the tongue microbiota. There are currently no reports on the microbial gene-expression profiles of the tongue microbiota in halitosis. In this study, we performed RNAseq of tongue coating samples from individuals with and without halitosis. The activity of Streptococcus (including S. parasanguinis), Veillonella (including V. dispar) and Rothia (including R. mucilaginosa) was associated with halitosis-free individuals while Prevotella (including P. shahi), Fus…

The Problem of Halitosis in Prosthetic Dentistry, and New Approaches to Its Treatment: A Literature Review.

The aim of this work is a review of recent scientific literature about intra-oral halitosis among patients using dentures. Halitosis is a condition in which an unpleasant smell comes out of the oral cavity, which is caused mainly by volatile sulfur and non-sulfured compounds. The etiology of halitosis may be intra- or extra-oral; in most patients, however, it is due to the activity of microorganisms in the oral cavity. The problem of the occurrence of intra-oral halitosis has accompanied patients for many years. In dental prosthetics, the problem of halitosis occurs in patients using removable…
