The author discusses a benign cartilaginous tumor involving the tubular bones, more frequently in the hand than the foot. Its rare occurrence in the second toe of an adult male is illustrated. Pain and swelling required excisional biopsy, whose diagnosis was aided by radiographic findings of calcification and cortical erosion.

Introduction. Osteotomy or fracture models can be used to evaluate mechanical properties of fixation techniques of the hand skeleton in vitro. Although many studies make use of osteotomy models, fracture models simulate the clinical situation more realistically. This study investigates monocortical and bicortical plate fixation on metacarpal bones considering both aforementioned models to decide which method is best suited to test fixation techniques. Methods. Porcine metacarpal bones (n = 40) were randomized into 4 groups. In groups I and II bones were fractured with a modified 3-point bendin

The constant concentration of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the extracellular fluids can be maintained by two mechanisms; the local and the hormonal one. In the case of the local, a potential Ca2+ balance is achieved between the extracellular space on the one hand and the bones and intertine on the other hand, which may come to concentrations of 7 mg/100 ml. The complete settlement of the Ca2+ level up to the normal limits of 9-11 mg/100 ml of plasma, is achieved by the action of the hormonal mechanism. This acts through a negative ruccessive muctual control. The hormonal mechanism includes the actio

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of corticoplasty for multiple enchondromatosis of the hand.
METHODS: Between February 2003 and January 2011, 6 patients with multiple enchondromatosis were treated. Of 6 cases, 1 was boy and 5 were girls with an average age of 10.8 years (range, 9-12 years); 5 cases presented with painless mass as first symptom, and 1 case was found to have mass by X-ray film because of hand injury. Physical examination at admission showed multiple mass on the hands, fingers deformity, and limited range of motion; X-ray film results showed large lesions in the phalanges and

The function of the hand can be substantially impaired by fractures of the finger and metacarpal bones. Metacarpal fractures account for up to 50% of hand fractures, followed by finger fractures (25%), with the fifth metacarpal most commonly affected. The diagnostics include the clinical examination, X‑ray and often computed tomography (CT) imaging. The treatment depends on the type of fracture and clinical function as well as the patient's needs. In many cases conservative treatment is possible. Surgically, K‑wires, plate or screw osteosyntheses and rarely external fixators are used. Postoper

Klippel-Trenaunaysyndrome(KTS) is a rare congenital condition usually presenting with port wine stains, excessive growth of bones and soft tissue and varicose veins which most commonly occurs in the legs, but it also may affect the arms, face, head, or internal organs. We report a case of term male neonate with clinical findings of Port-wine stain, multiple cystic swellings with ultrasonographic findings suggestive of vascular malformations and limb abnormalities in the form ofsoft tissue hypertrophy of right upper limb, polydactyly of right hand and syndactyly of left hand consistent withKlip

The small carpal bones are infrequent sites for osteoid osteomas, and their clinical and imaging pictures may be quite confusing leading to suspect other etiologies. The authors present herein an unusual case of osteoid osteoma of the scaphoid superimposed on a wrist injury caused by a fall on the outstretched hand.

Ultrasound has emerged as the most useful imaging tool for investigating wrist and hand disorders, with several published ultrasound protocols having demonstrated their practicality in scanning the wrist tendons and nerves. However, ligaments of the wrist are networked in a complex manner, deterring sonographers from examining them with an organized strategy. Furthermore, because of the non-parallel alignment between the radiocarpal, mid-carpal, and carpal-metacarpal joints, precise recognition of the carpal bones is challenging, although ultrasound is paramount for visualizing the wrist ligam

Carpal coalition, the union of 2 or more carpal bones, can be congenital or acquired. Congenital, nonsyndromic carpal coalition usually presents in otherwise healthy individuals. The most common coalition is between the lunate and the triquetrum, followed by the capitate and the hamate. Pancarpal coalition, or coalition of all or most of the bones of the carpus, is an extremely rare finding and usually occurs as part of a syndrome. We present a nonsyndromic case of this rare entity, in a 28-year-old woman of West African descent, with symptoms of left hand and wrist pain. Our literature review

Severe compressive trauma to the hand presents with multiple soft-tissue and osseous manifestations that often appear unrelated, leading to underrecognition and potential undertreatment of the complex injuries. Approaching the crushed hand with a logical and systematic diagnostic plan allows surgeons to recognize the location and severity of the injury portfolio and direct comprehensive treatment. Both for emphasis and for the purpose of describing the hydraulic mechanism of tissue failure, the term exploded hand syndrome is proposed. The exploded hand connotes the compendium of clinical findi

Currently, the most commonly used method of treatment of patients with fractures of the metacarpal bones is closed reposition with immobilization of short-arm cast. This often leads to dislocation of fragments, their malunion, which leads to wrist functionality disorders and reduces the quality of patients' life. The main way to eliminate the deformities ‒ osteotomy of the metacarpal bones, followed by osteosynthesis. Purpose of the study ‒ to give a clinical assessment of the results of surgical treatment of patients with posttraumatic deformities of the Metacarpals, based on the use of a new

Muscles, bones, and tendons in the adult tetrapod limb are intimately integrated, both spatially and functionally. However, muscle and bone evolution do not always occur hand in hand. We asked, how does the loss of limb bones affect limb muscle anatomy, and do these effects vary among different lineages? To answer these questions, we compared limb muscular and skeletal anatomy among gymnophthalmid lizards, which exhibit a remarkable variation in limb morphology and different grades of digit and limb reduction. We mapped the characters onto a phylogeny of the group to assess the likelihood that

A boy aged 5 months had the TAR syndrome (thrombocytopenia and aplasia of radial bones) of autosomal recessive inheritance. Bilateral reduction of the length of the upper extremities included both forearm bones and humerus, so that the shoulder girdle was connected directly to the hand, with all fingers and thumb normally shaped. These skeletal anomalies were associated with thrombocytopenia. Various other abnormalities were present, with the most controversial anomaly being bilateral cleft of the lip and secondary palate. It may be an accidental coexistence of abnormalities or may suggest a c

A case is presented of a 28-year-old man with Hand-Schüller-Christian's disease whose initial manifestations were skull bones lesions and a diffuse interstitial fibrosis. Three years later the patient developed diabetes insipidus without changes in the hypothalamic-hypophysial region on computed tomography. Some features of the clinical picture are discussed.

Hand bones from a single individual with a clear taxonomic affiliation are scarce in the hominin fossil record, which has hampered understanding the evolution of manipulative abilities in hominins. Here we describe and analyze a nearly complete wrist and hand of an adult female [Malapa Hominin 2 (MH2)] Australopithecus sediba from Malapa, South Africa (1.977 million years ago). The hand presents a suite of Australopithecus-like features, such as a strong flexor apparatus associated with arboreal locomotion, and Homo-like features, such as a long thumb and short fingers associated with precisio

An ontogenetic series of 22 cleared and double-stained prenatal specimens was used to study the sequence of ossification of selected postcranial skeletal elements of Talpa europaea. Results were compared with nine other therian mammals, with Alligator, Chelydra, and Lacerta as outgroups. Using the event-pairing method, shifts in the onset of ossification in T. europaea, Sus, and Homo were identified. In T. europaea, the ossification of the cervical vertebrae starts before the metatarsals. In Homo and Sus, the tarsals ossify before the pubic bone. These shifts in the sequence of ossification ar

The role of the orthopedic surgeon in the management of Paget's disease is in: evaluation and treatment of the cause of a patient's pain; evaluation of any deformities; treatment of fractures and tumors in affected bones. Pain due to active disease must be differentiated from nerve compression syndromes and arthritic pain because effective medical treatment is now available for pagetic bones. Spinal stenosis and sciatica are frequent in patients with Paget's desease because of vertebral body remodeling and collpase. Femoral and pelvic osseus pain may improve with treatment while an arthritic h

BACKGROUND: Manifested hand infections are usually treated by sufficient debridement and drainage followed by splinting and elevation of the corresponding upper extremity. The role of antibiotics in the postoperative prognosis of hand infections is contradictory.
METHODS: Three groups of 30 patients each with subcutaneous or subfascial localized hand infections without infiltration of tendons, joints, or bones, have been treated in a different way regarding the use of antibiotics postoperatively. Group 1 was treated with systemic cephalosporins as well as locally inserted Gentamycin bead chai

This article discusses the significance that contusions, fractures, or ligament injuries (involving the small bones, joints, and soft tissues of the forearm, wrist, or hand) can have on the athlete. The concern for proper management of upper-extremity injuries is addressed in order to decrease the possibility of long-term function consequences for the athlete.
