BACKGROUND: The role of nickel in causing hand dermatitis in some occupations has been difficult to assess due to problems with reliable measurement of the exposure to nickel in the workplace and lack of a definitive threshold for nickel allergic contact dermatitis. It is not uncommon to find nickel allergy on patch testing but it is difficult to determine whether this is of relevance to occupational nickel exposure or simply a reflection of past exposure to nickel-plated jewellery or other nonoccupational nickel exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Painful crises represents a predominant complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). The only approved treatments for painful crises in many countries are hydroxyurea plus potent analgesics. Our earlier clinical trial concluded that omega-3 and vitamin D had a potential therapeutic impact on painful crises. However, there is limited research evaluating their therapeutic applications and cost-effectiveness. This paper aims at comparing the cost-effectiveness of omega-3 and vitamin D supplementation to the standard therapy in treating painful crises among children with SCD.

The management of intractable onychomycosis involving multiple fingernails continues to be optimized. Failure of pharmacological treatment necessitates operative intervention. Current surgical procedures are complex and have frequent donor site complications. This report describes a safe, simple, and effective surgical treatment that eradicates the disease, results in low morbidity, and yields high patient satisfaction.

Palmar involvement in lichen nitidus is infrequent. In such cases, the histopathologic findings of palmar lesions are usually identical to those of extrapalmar ones. We report on the case of a patient with multiple tiny papules located on the palms and elbows. A biopsy specimen from the elbow showed the typical features of lichen nitidus, but a biopsy from the palm disclosed an inflammatory infiltrate mostly disposed around the bases of rete ridges and composed of lymphocytes and histiocytes with some giant cells both in the dermis and in the epidermis. This location of the infiltrate is simil

A variety of cutaneous lesions may occur in Behçet's disease (BD) both at presentation and over the course of the disease. Skin involvement of the hands and feet has been infrequently observed. We describe a patient with BD with recurrent, multiple, papulonodular cutaneous lesions affecting the palm and fingers of both hands, occurring simultaneously with aphthous stomatitis. The lesions consisted of roundish, erythematous, painful, bluish-red nodules, 0.5-1 cm in diameter, with a "pernio-like" aspect. Histologic examination revealed perivascular neutrophilic infiltrates. We suggest that cutan

A 40-year-old woman with systemic sclerosis presented with multiple, large soft skin lesions with a cystic appearance over the interphalangeal joints of both hands. Aspiration of one of these lesions revealed the presence of a yellowish mucoid material which rapidly reappeared. Surgical dissection and excision of the masses was followed by recurrence a few months later. Pre-operative diagnosis was that of myxoid cysts, but the histological picture was reminiscent of cutaneous focal mucinosis, another form of primary mucinosis. The origin of these unique skin lesions is unclear, but speculation

INTRODUCTION: In 1989 a new type of calcinosis cutis has been described in association with Down's syndrome. This is the milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis, which is characterized by milia-like papulae generally located on the limbs (especially hands and feet) and sometimes associated with syringomas around lesions or on the eyelids.
OBSERVATION: A 6 year old trisomic girl had about ten round shaped hard white-yellowish papules with a diameter of 2-3 mm on both palms of her hands. The biological balance and immunologic tests gave normal values. The histopathologic pattern was compatible w

INTRODUCTION: Acral persistent papular mucinosis is an uncommon skin disease with characteristic mucin deposits in the medial layer of the derma. In the Rongioletti and Rebora classification, this disease belongs to the group of specific cutaneous mucinoses.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old girl consulted for symmetrical papular lesions on the back of the hand and wrists. The first manifestations had occurred at the age of 3 years. Laboratory tests were positive for antinuclear antibodies at 1/320. The histology and the clinical presentation led to the diagnosis of acral persistent papular mucinosi

Knuckle pads are well circumscribed thickenings of the skin over the metacarpophalangeal and, more commonly, the proximal interphalangeal joints. Although the association with several other clinical syndromes including Dupuytren's disease is well documented, most cases are idiopathic. We present a case of knuckle pads and briefly review the history and course of this disease.

Irritant contact dermatitis is the most frequent cause of occupational hand eczema and results from undue environmental demands on the skin. Preventive measures to reduce the irritant stress to the skin is the best method of tackling this problem.
