Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a genetically heterogeneous congenital limb malformation typically limited to a defect of the central rays of the autopod, presenting as a median cleft of hands and feet. It can be associated with long bone deficiency or included in more complex syndromes. Among the numerous genetic causes, WNT10B homozygous variants have been recently identified in consanguineous families, but remain still rarely described (SHFM6; MIM225300). We report on three novel SHFM families harboring WNT10B variants and review the literature, allowing us to highlight some clinical

A pattern of correlative changes in lateralization in individuals with known or suspected brain injury recently has been advanced as the syndrome of pathological left-handedness (PLH). This syndrome, which is believed to be caused by an early left-sided cerebral lesion, may include asymmetric motor and/or trophic changes on the right side of a body part in addition to changes in higher-level cognitive processing abilities. Several clinical case studies have provided support for such a syndrome. Despite their clinical subject to inherent biases of selection. The present study was therefore desi

AIM: To present a developmental coordination disorder in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity syndrome (ADHS) characterized by anomalous handwriting posture of hands and fingers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five children who presented with ADHS were studied (39 males and 6 females) with ages ranging from 6 to 16 years (average 10.8 years) and an analysis of the position of the hands and fingers during handwriting was made within the context of a complete neurological evaluation.
RESULTS: Only 2 of the 6 hyperactive patients showed a discrete anomalous posture of the fingers, with no

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) are functional disabilities in the musculoskeletal area that occur when continuous damage to the muscles or tissues is caused by performing a repetitive task. These diseases are usually found in the waist, shoulder, neck, arm, and wrist. MSD is also referred to as cumulative trauma disorder, repetitive strain injury, occupational overuse syndrome, and visual display terminal, depending on the country. The condition is now commonly referred to as work-related musculoskeletal disorder.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop a prevention plan

Orofaciodigital syndromes (OFDS) are a group of diseases classified according to the phenotype and the mode of inheritance. We report on a female patient with ocular hypertelorism, broad nasal root, midline cleft of the upper lip, lobulated tongue, polydactyly of both hands, polysyndactyly of the right big toe and fifth toe, and polydactyly of the left foot. These clinical manifestations resembled OFDS type I. Other associated features included congenital heart defect, bilateral hydronephrosis, and vaginal atresia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of OFDS with vaginal atresia.

Split hand/split foot malformation (SHFM), which typically appears as lobster-like limb malformation, is a rare clinical condition caused by a partial deletion of chromosome 7q. Hearing impairment sometimes accompanies syndromic SHFM cases; a case of inner and middle ear malformation with SHFM is described in this report. We conducted a genetic evaluation of this patient and found a deleted region that overlaps a previously reported locus of SHFM as well as a DFNB14 locus that can cause nonsyndromic hearing impairment by autosomal recessive inheritance.

Haglund's syndrome is a triad of posterosuperior calcaneal prominence, retrocalcaneal bursitis, and insertional Achilles tendonitis. Endoscopic treatment of patients with this triad allows for earlier weight bearing, direct visualization of the Achilles insertion, and less soft tissue disruption. In addition, it allows excellent visualization of the pathology. The authors present a technique of endoscopic calcaneoplasty in the prone position with the monitor at the foot of the bed and the surgeon standing beside the patient. Prone positioning allows for easier access to the Haglund's deformity

Congenital enlargement of one or several digits of the hands or feet, known as macrodactyly, is a rare malformation. True macrodactyly, characterized by overgrowth of all mesenchymal elements, must be differentiated from that due to tumorous enlargement of a single element, as in hemangioma, lymphangioma or enchondroma. Furthermore, macrodactyly may be isolated, but it can also be associated with several syndromes. Here we present a case of prenatally diagnosed isolated true macrodactyly of the second toe of the left foot at 24 weeks of gestation, and discuss the key points in its differential

The paper is devoted to the description of a rare hereditary systemic skeletal disease--chondroectodermal dysplasia (CED). The clinical symptoms of CED are divided into 4 groups. On the basis of 2 cases, symptoms of the affection of the locomotor system in patients with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome are analyzed. An x-ray picture of hand and foot lesions is characterized not only by change in the shape, size, number and synostosis of some bones but also by marked reorganization of osseous tissue in the epimetaphysial regions. X-ray examination was shown to be the chief method for investigation of

Glomus tumors are painful benign neoplasms. They commonly present in the hand and are mostly solitary lesions. We report a rare case of multiple glomus tumors in the lower leg. Moreover, 1 of the tumors was in the tarsal tunnel. Resection of the tumors resulted in the early diagnosis of glomus tumors and complete symptom relief. Because of its rarity, diagnosing an extradigital glomus tumor is difficult. Recognition of glomus tumors allows for an early diagnosis and resection, and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging helps in the detection of multiple lesions. Before resection, we considere

Pfeiffer syndrome (PS) is an autosomal dominant skeletal disorder which affects the bones of the skull, hands and feet. Previously, we have mapped PS in a subset of families to chromosome 8cen by linkage analysis and demonstrated a common mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR1) gene in the linked families. Here we report a second locus for PS on chromosome 10q25, and present evidence that mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor-2 (FGFR2) gene on 10q25 cause PS in an additional subset of familial and sporadic cases. Three different point mutations in FGFR2, which

OBJECTIVES: The ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia clefting (EEC) syndrome is a rare genetic anomaly described as ectrodactyly (hands and feet), ectodermal dysplasia, and facial cleft with an incidence of around 1 in 90,000 in the population. This syndrome belongs to the TP63 gene's mutation family. Ectrodactyly is described as the absence of the central toes or fingers or parts of these appendages. Ectodermal dysplasia usually includes changes in the skin, teeth, hair, nails, endocrine glands, nasolacrimal ducts, genitourinary system, conductive hearing loss.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a uniq

Biochemical analysis of involved and uninvolved skin of a 16-year-old female with acrogeria showed that hyaluronic acid and collagen contents were decreased only in involved skin. Explant cultures from both involved and uninvolved skin synthesized mainly hyaluronic acid in similar amounts. Since the glycosaminoglycans and hydroxyproline excreted in the urine were not increased, we speculate that a localized rather than a systemic abnormality may be present in acrogeria. Decreased collagen and hyaluronic acid contents in the patient are discussed in relation to Werner's syndrome and type IV Ehl
