Conversational Artificial Intelligence as a Source of Oral Health Information: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Romanian Population.

Background/Objectives: Large language models have created new pathways for patients to access health information, yet little is known about how the general population uses these conversational artificial intelligence (AI) tools for oral health concerns. This study investigated patterns of AI use as a source of oral health information, the nature of data shared with these systems, users' perceptions, and the impact on dental care-seeking behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults from Bihor County, Romania, using a structured 16-item online questionnaire distributed v

Modeling the Potential Impact of Missing Race and Ethnicity Data in Infectious Disease Surveillance Systems on Disparity Measures: Scenario Analysis of Different Imputation Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring progress toward population health equity goals requires developing robust disparity indicators. However, surveillance data gaps that result in undercounting racial and ethnic minority groups might influence the observed disparity measures. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of missing race and ethnicity data in surveillance systems on disparity measures. METHODS: We explored variations in missing race and ethnicity information in reported annual chlamydia and gonorrhea diagnoses in the United States from 2007 to 2018 by state, year, reported sex, and infe

An Equity-Based Scoring System for Evaluating Surveillance-Related Harm in Public Health Crises.

BACKGROUND: Although surveillance systems used to mitigate disasters serve essential public health functions, communities of color have experienced disproportionate harms (eg, criminalization) as a result of historic and enhanced surveillance. METHODS: To address this, we developed and piloted a novel, equity-based scoring system to evaluate surveillance systems regarding their potential and actual risk of adverse effects on communities made vulnerable through increased exposure to policing, detention/incarceration, deportation, and disruption of access to social services or public resources.

Zoonotic disease transmission associated with feral cats in a metropolitan area: A geospatial analysis.

Feral cats raise public health concerns due to their large population numbers and ability to harbour pathogens that cause disease in people, pets, and wildlife. Information regarding the potential for feral cats to intersect with areas frequented by humans is lacking. This study examined the potential for feral cats and human territories to overlap in the Richmond metropolitan area of Central Virginia. Feral cats (n = 275) were trapped for monthly trap-neuter-release (TNR) clinics from July to November 2016. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to map feral cat trapping locations, el

Data and tools to integrate climate and environmental information into public health.

BACKGROUND: During the last 30 years, the development of geographical information systems and satellites for Earth observation has made important progress in the monitoring of the weather, climate, environmental and anthropogenic factors that influence the reduction or the reemergence of vector-borne diseases. Analyses resulting from the combination of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing have improved knowledge of climatic, environmental, and biodiversity factors influencing vector-borne diseases (VBDs) such as malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, dengue, Rift Valley fever, s

A look back on how far to walk: Systematic review and meta-analysis of physical access to skilled care for childbirth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVES: To (i) summarize the methods undertaken to measure physical accessibility as the spatial separation between women and health services, and (ii) establish the extent to which distance to skilled care for childbirth affects utilization in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHOD: We defined spatial separation as the distance/travel time between women and skilled care services. The use of skilled care at birth referred to either the location or attendant of childbirth. The main criterion for inclusion was any quantification of the relationship between spatial separation and use of skilled care at

The role of a bus network in access to primary health care in Metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand.

UNLABELLED: Background: This study examined the spatial accessibility of the population of metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand to the bus network, to connect them to primary health providers, in this case doctors (GP) and dentists. Analysis of accessibility by ethnic identity and socio-economic status were also carried out, because of existing health inequalities along these dimensions. The underlying hypothesis was that most people would live within easy reach of primary health providers, or easy bus transport to such providers. METHODS: An integrated geographic model of bus transport routes

The influence of the built environment on outcomes from a "walking school bus study": a cross-sectional analysis using geographical information systems.

Active commuting to school increases children's daily physical activity. The built environment is associated with children's physical activity levels in cross-sectional studies. This study examined the role of the built environment on the outcomes of a "walking school bus" study. Geographical information systems was used to map out and compare the built environments around schools participating in a pilot walking school bus randomised controlled trial, as well as along school routes. Multi-level modelling was used to determine the built environment attributes associated with the outcomes of ac

Modeling travel impedance to medical care for children with birth defects using Geographic Information Systems.

BACKGROUND: Children with birth defects may face significant geographic barriers accessing medical care and specialized services. Using a Geographic Information Systems-based approach, one-way travel time and distance to access medical care for children born with spina bifida was estimated. METHODS: Using 2007 road information from the Florida Department of Transportation, we built a topological network of Florida roads. Live-born Florida infants with spina bifida during 1998 to 2007 were identified by the Florida Birth Defects Registry and linked to hospital discharge records. Maternal resid

[Public health surveillance and the environment].

Since the 1970's, in many industrial countries, the awareness of environmental health risks has led to set up information systems in order to assess and monitor concentrations of pollutants in air, water or food. These monitoring systems aim to answer the question: "is the environmental contamination too high?". With this objective, concentrations of pollutants are compared to standards. Up to now, this approach has been favoured and many environmental data have been collected at a local, regional, national or international level. Nevertheless, other approaches are possible as the health surve

The rationale for integrated childhood meningoencephalitis surveillance: a case study from Cambodia.

PROBLEM: Recent progress in vaccine availability and affordability has raised prospects for reducing death and disability from neurological infections in children. In many Asian countries, however, the epidemiology and public health burden of neurological diseases such as Japanese encephalitis and bacterial meningitis are poorly understood. APPROACH: A sentinel surveillance system for Japanese encephalitis was developed and embedded within the routine meningoencephalitis syndromic surveillance system in Cambodia in 2006. The sentinel surveillance system was designed so surveillance and labora

Preclinical Alzheimer Disease and the Electronic Health Record: Balancing Confidentiality and Care.

Because information technologies are increasingly used to improve clinical research and care, personal health information (PHI) has wider dissemination than ever before. The 21st Century Cures Act in the United States now requires patient access to many components of the electronic health record (EHR). Although these changes promise to enhance communication and information sharing, they also bring higher risks of unwanted disclosure, both within and outside of health systems. Having preclinical Alzheimer disease (AD), where biological markers of AD are identified before the onset of any sympto

Validating the Global Surgery Geographical Accessibility Indicator: Differences in Modeled Versus Patient-Reported Travel Times.

BACKGROUND: Since long travel times to reach health facilities are associated with worse outcomes, geographic accessibility is one of the six core global surgery indicators; this corresponds to the second of the "Three Delays Framework," namely "delay in reaching a health facility." Most attempts to estimate this indicator have been based on geographical information systems (GIS) algorithms. The aim of our study was to compare GIS derived estimates to self-reported travel times for patients traveling to a district hospital in rural Rwanda for emergency obstetric care. METHODS: Our study inclu
