Exploring the Prevalence and Clinical Relevance of Health Literacy in Severe Obesity: A Scoping Review.

Recent studies suggest that health literacy (HL) may play an important role in management of individuals living with severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2), but to date, there has been no attempt to synthesize characteristics and outcomes of these studies. To explore the prevalence of low HL in people with severe obesity, and how HL may impact on health outcomes and management of severe obesity, six databases and two independent journals were searched. Seventeen studies were included in this review, mostly undertaken in high income countries, among females and candidates of bariatric surgery. Low HL …

The PANACEA Project: a multinational model for digital health literacy in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) represents an increasing public health challenge in Latin America, where structural inequities and limited access to standardized education contribute to gaps in health literacy. Despite the recognized role of patient education in IBD care, region-wide, structured digital initiatives remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe the implementation, reach, and educational performance of PANACEA (PANamerican Crohn's and Colitis Educational Approach), a multinational digital education program for patients with IBD and caregivers in Latin America. METHODS: W…

General and disease-specific health literacy in patients with heart failure: an outcome analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Limited health literacy is common among patients with heart failure (HF), and the relative importance of general and disease-specific health literacy for patient outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate general and disease-specific health literacy in patients with HF and to examine their association with behavioural, patient-reported and clinical outcomes. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 126 outpatients with HF (mean age 69 ± 11 years; 71% male) who were followed for 6 months. General health literacy was assessed using the Brief Health Litera…

The Moderating Role of Demographic Variables in the Effect of Health Literacy on Anti-Vaccination Sentiment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Vaccine hesitancy continues to pose a challenge to public health, and health literacy has been suggested as a potential factor influencing vaccination attitudes. However, the nature of this relationship and the role of sociodemographic characteristics remain to be clarified. This study aimed to examine the association between health literacy and vaccine refusal and to explore whether this relationship is moderated by education level, age, income, place of residence, and gender. METHODS: A cross-sectional nationwide online survey was conducted among 413 adults living in T…

Co-Creation of Interventions to Promote Critical Health Literacy in the Community: Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: A new community centre in a district with a high amount of equity deserving populations in Halle (Saale), Germany provides a space to design and implement health-related services that reflect the needs and priorities of local residents. Health information often fails to meet existing quality standards. Therefore, strengthening critical health literacy is essential. Co-creation is a participatory approach that addresses needs by involving community members as equal partners in the joint development of ideas, concepts and interventions. Compensatory network capital: negative and ambivalent ties in the conversion of health literacy into action.

Critical Health Literacy (CHL) emphasizes that health-related action is shaped by power, inequality and structural conditions, not by individual skills alone. This study examines a more specific and under-theorized link in that process: how negative and ambivalent social ties affect whether health-related competencies are enacted as concrete action in everyday healthcare. Drawing on 12 semi-structured interviews with adults living with multimorbidity in contexts of social vulnerability, the study explores how health-related knowledge, intentions, and professional advice are converted, delayed,…

Role of digital media campaigns in improving TB health literacy at the community level.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant health issue in the world, and lack of health literacy has resulted in delayed care-seeking practices, non-compliance with treatment regimens, and subsequent stigma in communities with the infection. The objective of the study was to determine whether multi-platform digital media campaigns enhance health literacy of the community on TB. The study involved a cluster-randomized controlled trial with sixteen communities in four districts in twelve months with intervention communities (n = 8) having targeted digital media campaigns and control communities (n = 8)…

Beyond the Lines: Exploration of Health Literacy Among Inmates in a European Prison in Africa.

Migration status, belonging to ethnic or racial minorities, and low educational and socioeconomic levels are predisposing factors for low health literacy, which can be further exacerbated by incarceration. This study aimed to explore the health literacy levels of incarcerated individuals in a European enclave on the African continent and compare these findings with the Spanish population assessed in the European Health Literacy Survey. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sampling method between August and September 2023. Participants completed the short form of the Spanis…

Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Health Literacy Instrument for Hispanic and Latino/a/e Communities.

Hispanic and Latino/a/e individuals are more likely to have lower levels of health literacy compared to other ethnic and racial groups. Additionally, 32% of this population also has limited English proficiency. There is a need to develop culturally valid instruments in Spanish to assess health literacy in this population. The Health Literacy Skills Instrument Short Form (HLSI-SF) was developed and validated in English by RTI International, but not in Spanish. Our aim was to culturally adapt the HLSI-SF to be used for Hispanic and Latino/a/e individuals living in the United States. We followed …

Determinants, Pathways, and Outcomes of Health Literacy in India: A System Dynamics Modelling Study.

Health literacy is a critical determinant of health. While many studies identify linear associations, the dynamic feedback mechanisms that create policy resistance and perpetuate health inequities remain poorly understood and studied. This study aims to develop a conceptual model of health literacy contextual for India, grounded in a systematic review of the literature, to identify key feedback loops and to test the comparative effectiveness of different policy interventions via system dynamics modelling. We conducted a systematic review to identify determinants, pathways and outcomes of healt…
