Health service use and health system costs associated with diabetes during pregnancy in Australia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the context of the rising rate of diabetes in pregnancy in Australia, this study aims to examine the health service … men who had diabetes compared to women who did not. A two-sample t-test compared the mean number of health services accessed. Generalised linear regression produced the mean costs associated with health service use. Mothers who had diabetes during pregnancy were more likely to have their labour induced at <38 weeks gestation (OR:1.39, 95% CI:1.29-1.50); have a ce …

Health economic burden that different wound types impose on the UK's National Health Service.

The aim of this study was to estimate the patterns of care and annual levels of health care resource use attributable to the management of different wound types by the UK's National Health Service (NHS) in 2012/2013 and the annual costs incurred by the NHS in managing them. This was a retrospective cohort analysis of the records of 2000 patients in The Health Improvement Network (THIN) Database. Patients' characteristics, wound-related health outcomes and all health care resource use were quantified, and the total NHS cost of patient management was estimated at 2013/2014 prices. The NHS manage

Perceptions of health and health service utilization among homeless and housed psychiatric consumer/survivors.

Homelessness has a direct impact on health. Homeless individuals report several barriers to accessing health care. Although research exists regarding the utilization of health services for homeless and housed psychiatric consumer/survivors, few studies have compared the perceived health and service utilization of these two groups. The objective of this study was to determine whether or not differences exist between the utilization of health services and the perceptions of health of homeless and housed psychiatric consumer/survivors in London, Ontario, Canada. It was hypothesized that differenc…

The "silver economy" of women's health: entrepreneurship and service models in China's menopause health sector.

Menopause health services in China lie at the critical juncture of the "silver economy" and women's health. As society ages and health awareness grows, the needs of roughly 160 million middle-aged women are moving to the forefront, creating a vast blue ocean market. This study constructs a "Demand-Supply-Empowerment" Interaction Model, identifying the core market conflict as the clash between widespread "physical/psychological distress" and a "mismatched service system." We explore the authentic experiences, needs, and behaviors of contemporary Chinese women. Using web crawling, we gathered ab…

Savoring the service: A qualitative study of Latine community health workers' health promotion efforts.

Latine communities have long faced stark health inequities and systemic barriers to accessing healthcare services. Community health workers (CHWs) serve as a key link between patients and the often-daunting healthcare system, providing crucial health education and support. Despite this important yet demanding role, little is known about CHWs' personal experiences of community health promotion and how they might draw upon their work for strength and endurance. The present study explored the potential for relational savoring, a procedure that elicits feelings of closeness and connection, to capt

Health promotion and preventive health care service guidelines for the care of people with spina bifida.

Individuals with Spina Bifida (SB) have unique lifelong medical and social needs. Thus, when considering how to promote health and offer preventive care, providers must adapt general healthcare screening and counseling recommendations to their patients' physical and cognitive impairments along with discerning how to monitor secondary or chronic conditions common to the population. This article provides an update on the health promotion and preventive health care guidelines developed as part of the Spina Bifida Association's fourth edition of the Guidelines for the Care of People with Spina Bif

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men…

Integrated Care for Serious Mental Illness, Physical Health Needs, and Social Services.

As health care transitions from fee-for-service (FFS) to value-based care (VBC), models that effectively integrate mental and physical health are essential, particularly considering the unsustainable rise of health care expenditures and less-than-desired outcomes of FFS. Mental health represents a significant and growing component of health care. Mental Health Cooperative (MHC), a Tennessee-based integrated health care system, has implemented a patient-centric integrated care model that addresses both behavioral and physical health needs for patients with behavioral health severe mental illnes

Family Caregiver Experiences with Mobile Behavioral Health Crisis Services: A Qualitative Study.

Mobile behavioral health crisis response services, staffed by clinicians and specialists, can support individuals experiencing urgent mental health or substance use issues. While Medicaid coverage for these services since 2021 has supported growth in their availability, research on family caregivers' experiences with mobile crisis services remains limited. Family caregivers often participate in encounters with crisis services when the person in crisis cannot seek help independently due to their symptoms. This study aimed to explore family members' experiences with a mobile crisis program in th

Primary Care Provider Confidence Delivering Sexual Health Services and Education to Adolescents.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To explore primary care providers' confidence delivering sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education and services to adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey measured United States based primary care providers' confidence delivering SRH care to adolescents. Confidence was measured on a 4-point Likert scale. Supporting menstrual health in homeless services: provider-informed strategies for multilevel change.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) face heightened barriers to menstrual health, including limited access to products, hygiene facilities, and consistent care. Social service providers (SSPs) and healthcare providers (HCPs) are critical in supporting PEH but often work within resource-constrained systems. This study explores SSP and HCP perspectives on the menstrual health needs of PEH in a rural-serving community in the U.S., using the Social-Ecological Model (SEM) to identify multilevel barriers and opportunities for intervention. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured intervi

Outreach health-care services for people experiencing exclusion in high-income countries.

Inclusion health aims to prevent and address health and social inequalities for people experiencing exclusion, such as people experiencing homelessness, people who have a history of contact with the criminal justice system, people who use drugs, sex workers, vulnerable migrants, victims of modern slavery and human trafficking, and Romany Gypsy, Roma, and Travellers communities. These populations have poor health outcomes and disproportionate health inequities, partly resulting from inadequate health-care access. Outreach services can improve health-care access, but there is little evidence of
