OBJECTIVE: To clarify the precise anatomic arrangement of the annular attachment of a common atrioventricular valve in the setting of visceral heterotaxy.
METHODS: One hundred and twelve autopsied specimens with isomeric atrial appendages were studied.

To evaluate the antiarrhythmic effect of reflex-induced vagal activation, phenylephrine was infused in 17 patients with frequent ventricular premature complexes (VPCs). The role of heart rate reduction in suppressing VPCs was explored by pacing the atria at the preinfusion levels. A series of 1042 reports of necropsies on children dying at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh was reviewed.
