INTRODUCTION: Little attention is given to thrombosis associated with pediatric acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). This study describes the thrombotic and hemorrhagic manifestations of APL in pediatric patients and evaluates their hemostasis, based on coagulation tests.
METHODS: Inclusion criteria were age 0-18 years and APL diagnosis between April 2005 and November 2017. Patients who had received blood transfusion prior to coagulation tests were excluded. Baseline coagulation tests, hematologic counts, and hemorrhagic/thrombotic manifestations were evaluated.
RESULTS: Median age was 10.7 y

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hematologic malignancies were previously thought to be primarily sporadic cancers without germline predispositions. However, over the last two decades, with the widespread use of next generation sequencing (NGS), there have been several genes have been identified that carry a risk of inheriting hematologic malignancies. Identification of individuals with hereditary hematologic malignancies (HHM) involves a high index of suspicion and careful attention to family history, clinical features, and variant allele frequency on somatic NGS panels.
RECENT FINDINGS: Over the last sev

With the rapid development of new therapies for patients with hematological malignancies, there is an increasing need for patient report of symptom status during all phases of drug testing. The patient's perspective on new treatments reflects treatment tolerability as well as symptom benefit, and may assist patients and clinicians in choosing treatments. Inclusion of patient-reported outcomes, more common in solid-tumor than hematological trials, provides early information about symptoms to guide decisions about appropriate dosing and supportive care needs. We provide a historical overview of

Drug-induced hematological disorders constitute up to 30% of all blood dyscrasias seen in the clinic. Hematologic toxicity from drugs may range from life-threatening marrow aplasia, agranulocytosis, hemolysis, thrombosis to mild leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying these disorders vary from an extension of the pharmacological effect of the drug to idiosyncratic and immune-mediated reactions. Predicting these reactions is often difficult, and this makes clinical decision-making challenging. Evidence supporting the role of pharmacogenomics in the management of

INTRODUCTION: HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome causes systemic metabolic alterations and psychological distress that worsen the quality of life of these patients. An early detection should be considered to efficiently treat it. Objective criteria or reference indices are needed for an early diagnosis. Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is an operator-independent, repeatable and non-invasive method of body composition evaluation that is less expensive than dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and/or CT scans. The aims of this pilot study were to validate the data obtained by BIA to m

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anemia is common and associated with adverse postoperative outcomes. Assessment of hemoglobin concentrations may facilitate optimization prior to surgery. However, phlebotomy-based hemoglobin measurement may contribute to patient discomfort and iatrogenic blood loss, which makes non-invasive hemoglobin estimation attractive in this setting.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a prospective study of adult patients presenting for preoperative evaluation before elective surgery at a tertiary care medical center. The Masimo Pronto Pulse CO-Oximeter was utilized to estimate

BACKGROUND: EarlyCDT Lung (Oncimmune Holdings plc, Nottingham, UK) is a blood test to assess malignancy risk in people with solid pulmonary nodules. It measures the presence of seven lung cancer-associated autoantibodies. Elevated levels of these autoantibodies may indicate malignant disease. The results of the test might be used to modify the risk of malignancy estimated by existing risk calculators, including the Brock and Herder models.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to determine the diagnostic accuracy, clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of EarlyCDT Lung; and to develop a conc

Anemia can be the consequence of a single disease or an expression of external factors mainly nutritional deficiencies. Genetic issues are important in the primary care of adolescents because a genetic diagnosis may not be made until adolescence when the teenager presents with the first signs or symptoms of the condition. This situation is relatively frequent for rare anemias (RA) an important, and relatively heterogeneous group of rare diseases (RD) where anemia is the first and most relevant clinical manifestation of the disease. RA are characterized by their low prevalence (< 1 per 10,000 i

The EarlyCDT-Lung test is a high-specificity blood-based autoantibody biomarker that could contribute to predicting lung cancer risk. We report on the results of a phase IV biomarker evaluation of whether using the EarlyCDT-Lung test and any subsequent computed tomography (CT) scanning to identify those at high risk of lung cancer reduces the incidence of patients with stage III/IV/unspecified lung cancer at diagnosis compared with the standard clinical practice at the time the study began. The Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer Scotland (ECLS) trial was a randomised controlled trial of 12 208 part

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) is one of hereditary diseases sariously influencing the human health. G6PD is characterized by wide distribution, high incidence, inducing the hemolysis, complex mechanism of hemolysis and common occurence in children and so on. The blood transfusion is most effective method for acute ouset of hemolysis, but the risk is more high, thereby it is necessary to guarante the safety of blood transfusion. In addition of the routine managementin blood transfusion and standard procedures, the basic rules and indicators of blood transfusion must be gra

The neonatal hemostatic system is continuously developing with rapidly changing concentrations of many coagulation proteins. Thus, determining the etiology of bleeding in a newborn has additional challenges beyond those seen in older children or adults. Bleeding can be seen in both well and sick newborns due to congenital causes, such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease, and acquired causes, such as liver failure or disseminated intravascular coagulation. Traditional coagulation testing should be interpreted with caution and with the help of a hematologist, if possible, due to the greatly

INTRODUCTION: Automated hematology analyzers dilute patient erythrocytes with an isoosmotic diluent before quantitating the erythrocyte mean cell volume (MCV). However, if patient plasma osmolality differs from the diluent, water will cross the erythrocytes membrane and establish a new equilibrium across the membrane. Since the new equilibrium is reached before the measurement of the MCV, the measured MCV may not reflect the true MCV in vivo.
AIM: Calculation of the theoretical change in MCV at changed P-Sodium/P-Osmolality and to investigate if the automated blood cell counter Sysmex XE 2100
