Understanding the role of arthropod vectors in the emergence and spread of plant, animal and human diseases. A chronicle of epidemics foretold in South of France.

Southern France, like the rest of the world, is facing the emergence of diseases affecting plants, animals and humans, of which causative agents (viruses, parasites, bacteria) are transmitted by arthropod vectors. Global changes are accelerating the emergence and spread of these diseases. After presenting some examples related to vectors of yellow fever and dengue viruses (Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (Hyalomma marginatum), Bluetongue (Culicoides sp.), and the phytopathogen Xylella fastidiosa (Hemiptera spp.), we will discuss what are the intrinsic and ext…

Coccinellid predators of mealybugs infesting banana in South India, including a new species and a new record of Scymnus Kugelann (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), with notes on other natural enemies.

Several species of mealybugs infest various parts of bananas and plantains including foliage, fruits, rhizome and roots in all the major banana growing regions of India and cause moderate to occasionally serious damage but systematic attempts at documenting the mealybug pests of banana and their natural enemies are lacking in India. In this study, mealybugs infesting bananas and plantains in Tamil Nadu, South India, are documented along with their coccinellid predators and other natural enemies. The exotic Jack Beardsley mealybug, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel & Miller, was found to be a

Metabolic Resistance in Abamectin-Resistant Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean from Northern China.

Abamectin, produced by the soil-dwelling actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis, belongs to the macrocyclic lactones class of pesticides, has nematocidal, acaricidal, and insecticidal activity, and is highly effective when used against targeted species. Bemisia tabaci, the tobacco whitefly, is a highly destructive insect to agricultural production worldwide, and various insecticide-resistant strains have been identified in China. Here, we monitored levels of resistance to abamectin in twelve field-collected B. tabaci populations from northern China, and confirmed that, compared with the lab ref

Endotherapic treatment to control Toumeyella parvicornis Cockerell infestations on Pinus pinea L.

BACKGROUND: The pine tortoise scale, Toumeyella parvicornis (Cockerell, 1897), is a damaging insect pest native to North America. Its accidental introduction into Europe, where it was first reported in central-southern Italy, is leading to severe infestations among stone pine trees, Pinus pinea L. causing severe infestations and generating a major risk to the health and safety of the citizens as well. This preliminary study aimed at finding an effective low-impact control strategy against Toumeyella parvicornis. We evaluated the effect of endotherapic abamectin injected into infested stone pin

Distribution of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus in Citrus and the Asian Citrus Psyllid in Texas Over a Decade.

Huanglongbing (HLB, citrus greening disease) in the major citrus-producing states of the United States is associated with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), which is vectored by the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP). Surveys were conducted in Texas from 2007 to 2017 to assess the prevalence and titer of CLas in ACPs and citrus trees. ACP and citrus leaf tissue samples were collected from suspect trees in residential areas and commercial groves (orchards) and assayed for CLas by quantitative PCR. CLas detection in ACPs (2011) preceded that of citrus trees (2012) by several months. Annual incide

Discovery of A Safe and Effective Hemipteran Insecticide: α6 nAChR-Targeting Non-Mesoionic Scaffold.

Triflumezopyrim, a mesoionic insecticide targeting nAChRs, effectively controls resistant hemipteran pests like planthoppers but raises concerns over non-target toxicity, especially to honeybees. In this study, we identified compound Q1, a pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4-dione derivative, which exhibits slightly superior insecticidal activity against hemipteran pests compared to triflumezopyrim, with an LC50 value of 2.83 mg/L against Acyrthosiphon pisum, whereas triflumezopyrim shows an LC50 of 2.92 mg/L. Multi-omics integrated analysis confirmed that α6 serves as a key regulatory hub for maintai…

Honeydew microbial ecology: a neglected frontier in multitrophic networks.

Honeydew, the sugary excretion produced by sap-feeding Hemiptera, is one of the most common carbohydrate resources in many plant-based food webs. Honeydew supports a wide range of organisms, including ants, pollinators, (hyper-)parasitoids wasps, predatory insects, and microbes. As a sugar-rich resource, honeydew is frequently colonized by specific microbes (i.e. bacteria and fungi), which consume its sugars and other nutritional constituents. Recent research suggests that microbes within honeydew may modify its traits. Thereby driving microbial succession and acting as important 'hidden playe…

In vitro isolation and identification of entomopathogenic fungus (Metarhizium pinghaense) and assessment of its virulence against whiteflies and aphids.

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Aphis gossypii (Glover) are two notorious pests of vegetables grown in greenhouses and their outbreaks can be devastating and cause a significant loss in yield and quality. The prevail and effective control of the pests mainly relies on frequent applications of pesticides, which is likely to negatively impact environments and human health through residue, resurgence, and resistance. To avoid negative "3R" issues brought forth by chemicals, entomopathogenic fungus such as Metarhizium sp. are widely used as biocontrol agents even if they are different in their popu

The Genome Sequence of the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus Martin): Insights on Biology of an Invasive Agricultural Insect Pest and Implications for Pest Control.

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly (RSW) (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus Martin), a pest native to Central America, infests coconut palms and has been introduced to other regions of the world including North America (e.g., Florida) and Southeast Asia. In India, RSW was first reported in 2016, and rapidly expanded to multiple states nationwide. Currently, RSW has growing global relevance as an agricultural insect pest. In addition to coconut, the RSW exhibits a broad host range, causing damage to various palms, fruit crops such as guava, vegetables, and ornamental shrubs. In this study, we present a hi

Cadmium exposure increases insecticide sensitivity of Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) by decrease the diversity of symbiotic bacteria.

Cadmium (Cd) is a prevalent environmental pollutant in agricultural ecosystems, particularly within paddy ecosystems, is readily absorbed by rice and enter herbivorous insects through the food chain, thereby influencing the implementation of integrated pest management strategies. However, the effect and mechanisms of Cd exposure on the sensitivity of pests in paddy to insecticides remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of Cd exposure on the fitness, insecticide sensitivity and symbiotic bacteria of Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (white-backed planthopper, WBPH). Planthopper salivary sheath protein LsSP1 contributes to manipulation of rice plant defenses.

Salivary elicitors secreted by herbivorous insects can be perceived by host plants to trigger plant immunity. However, how insects secrete other salivary components to subsequently attenuate the elicitor-induced plant immunity remains poorly understood. Here, we study the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus salivary sheath protein LsSP1. Using Y2H, BiFC and LUC assays, we show that LsSP1 is secreted into host plants and binds to salivary sheath via mucin-like protein (LsMLP). Rice plants pre-infested with dsLsSP1-treated L. striatellus are less attractive to L. striatellus nymphs t

An Antennae-Enriched Odorant-Binding Protein EonuOBP43 Mediate the Behavioral Response of the Tea Green Leafhopper, Empoasca onukii Matsuda to the Host and Nonhost Volatiles.

Olfaction is crucial for Empoasca onukii Matsuda to recognize odors from the host and nonhost plants, and it has been proposed that odorant binding proteins are directly required for odorant discrimination and represent potential targets of interest for pest control. Here, we cloned EonuOBP43 and expressed the recombinant EonuOBP43 protein. Furthermore, competitive fluorescence binding assays with 19 ligands indicated that terpenoids and alkanes showed a relatively higher than for other classes of chemicals. Additionally, ligand docking and site-directed mutagenesis results revealed that seven

Activation and detoxification of cassava cyanogenic glucosides by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

Two-component plant defenses such as cyanogenic glucosides are produced by many plant species, but phloem-feeding herbivores have long been thought not to activate these defenses due to their mode of feeding, which causes only minimal tissue damage. Here, however, we report that cyanogenic glycoside defenses from cassava (Manihot esculenta), a major staple crop in Africa, are activated during feeding by a pest insect, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, and the resulting hydrogen cyanide is detoxified by conversion to beta-cyanoalanine. Additionally, B. tabaci was found to utilize two metabolic mecha

Avocado kernels, an industrial residue: a source of compounds with insecticidal activity against silverleaf whitefly.

Fruit processing waste, such as kernels (endocarp + seed) of avocado [Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae)], could be used as raw material in the preparation of botanical insecticides. In light of this potential, this study assessed the insecticidal action of extracts and fractions from kernels of two avocado cultivars (Breda and Margarida) on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) biotype B, an important pest species in tropical conditions. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts prepared from kernels of P. americana, regardless of the plant cultivar used, caused promising insecticidal acti…

Stink bug predator kills prey with salivary non-proteinaceous compounds.

Podisus nigrispinus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a predator insect with potential applications in biological control because both nymphs and adults have been shown to prey on other insect pests by injection of toxic salivary gland contents. This study identified non-proteinaceous compounds with insecticidal activity from the saliva of P. nigrispinus in Anticarsia gemmatalis. In particular, the ether extract from P. nigrispinus saliva led to mortality in A. gemmatalis larvae, with a LC50 = 2.04 μL and LC90 = 3.27 μL. N,N-dimethylaniline and 1,2,5-trithiepane fractions were identified as …
