Genetic linkage between the albino (c) and hemoglobin beta-chain (Hb beta) genes in rabbits was demonstrated by means of segregation data from one full-sib family. The map distance was estimated at 9 +/- 6 cM, which is similar to the 8 cM previously estimated between the same pair of loci in both mice and rats. The interspecies conservation of the chromosome segment comprising c and Hb beta thus extends outside the rodent family. Indications that it also may be conserved in man are discussed.

METHODS: We performed a review of 102 pregnancies managed at The Ohio State University from 1967 to 2001 for anti-c isoimmunization. Of these, 55 had complete data and are included in this report. Information collected included serum titers, deltaOD450 values, Liley zones, fetal and neonatal hemoglobin levels and antigen typing, neonatal direct antiglobulin test, and neonatal outcomes. We studied the behavior of fast hemoglobin fractions in newly discovered diabetic patients, before and in the 10 days immediately following the beginning of insulin therapy, in order to verify whether or not the rapid improvement of glycemic control involved a rapid reduction of total HbA1 and of its fractions. A cardioprotectant at low concentrations, H2S is a toxin at high concentrations and inhibits cytochrome c oxidase. A conundrum in H2S homeostasis is its fate in red blood cells (RBCs), which produce H2S but lack the canonical mitochondrial sulfide oxidation pathway for its clearance. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Surgical interventions for epistaxis management in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) demonstrate short-term success and require repeated procedures for disease control. Although electrocautery and/or laser photocoagulation (C ± L) are most frequently performed, sodium tetradecyl sclerotherapy (STS) is emerging as a promising newer treatment.
