Predictor factors for lower extremity malalignment and non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries in male athletes.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the predictor factors concerning the lower extremity alignment in non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries among male athletes. METHODS: In a retrospective study, the unilateral navicular drop, the ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), internal tibia torsion, knee genu recurvatum, quadriceps angle, hip internal and external rotation ROM and hip anteversion were measured in 53 subjects with complete ACL injury and compared with these accepted standard values. To identify predictor factors for lower extremity alignment and non-con

Incidence and biomechanical risk factors for running-related injuries: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Injuries among runners is significant, yet the contributing risk factors remain elusive. The objective of this study was to examined the incidence and biomechanical elements associated with running-related injuries. METHODS: A 24-week prospective study was carried out. Injury incidence was calculated per 1000 h of running, with participants completing bi-monthly online questionnaires. Biomechanical risk factors, encompassing plantar pressure, muscle strength of hip and knee muscles, core stability, dorsiflexion, passive hip internal rotation, lower extremity length, Q-angle, and s

[Scanning Technique in Hip Ultrasonography].

This guide to ultrasound imaging of the hip describes the basic scanning planes and contains corresponding highresolution ultrasound images. The patient and probe positionings are explained in a simplified step-by-step manner using schematic drawings. This standard and simple examination technique seems to be an appropriate way to improve the learning curve of novice musculoskeletal sonographers. In this manuscript, an emphasis is put on hip effusion detection and on how to diagnose tendon and muscle injuries. Key words: tendons, hip tendinopathy, hip joint, athletic injuries, musculoskeletal,

Traumatic Obturator Variant of Anterior Hip Dislocation - A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior hip dislocations are rare injuries, usually produced by forceful abduction and external rotation of the hip. Two variants of anterior hip dislocation are described, based on the position of the femoral head-iliac and obturator variants. CASE SERIES: Four cases of the obturator type of anterior hip dislocations are described in this series. All the cases were reduced by closed reduction maneuvers. Post-reduction plain radiographs were taken to confirm reduction. Post-reduction computed tomography was also done to look for any associated injuries, such as femoral head fra

Chondral Lesions of the Hip.

The treatment of chondral hip injuries is challenging. However, for young patients with hip disorders, orthopedic surgeons now have the opportunity to intervene early in the development of debilitating joint disease. As understanding of the hip joint continues to evolve, more effective treatment strategies are emerging. There are several reportedly successful options for surgical treatment. This article reviews the clinical presentation of chondral injuries and the surgical modalities, arthroscopic and open, available to treat them.

[The meaning of cartilage therapy in the treatment of FAIS : Is a specific cartilage therapy necessary or is deformity correction sufficient?].

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) surgery aims to restore the natural anatomical relationships between bones and the soft tissues comprising the hip joint. Most cartilage repair methods for the hip are based on basic science and strategies that were developed for the knee. Currently, there is a lack of information in the literature regarding systematic reviews on evidence-based options in treating cartilage injuries of the hip joint. The aim of this article is to assess treatment options and their related outcomes for chondral injuries in the hip based on the available evidence whil

Decreased moment of inertia of the lower limb facilitates a rapid hip internal rotation in a simulated foot impact maneuver. A laboratory-controlled biomechanical study for a precursor mechanism of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament injury frequently occurs in the deceleration with the knee-extended position. In addition, a rapid hip internal rotation is concomitantly observed. However, how the extended knee position induces the hip internal rotation is unclear. METHODS: Sixteen healthy participants performed the simulated foot impact task on the experimental chair. To vary the knee flexion angle, the following four-foot placement positions relative to the pelvis segment, i.e.: 1) near; 2) middle; 3) far; and 4) far + heel strike, were tested. The reflective marker positions and the

Combined Intracapsular And Extracapsular Neck Of Femur Fractures Case Series, Literature Review And Management Recommendations.

Concomitant ipsilateral intracapsular and extracapsular fractures of the femoral neck are rare injuries with only 14 cases described in the literature as single case reports. We present three cases that were successfully and uniquely treated by uncemented hip arthroplasties. Two patients underwent complex primary uncemented total hip replacements, and one patient underwent an uncemented bipolar fluted stem hemiarthroplasty. The level of bearing constraint varied between implants. After describing our cases we review the literature and make recommendations on the management of these injuries. W

[Disastrous triad of femoral head:femoral neck fracture meeting fracture-dislocation of femoral head].

Femoral head and ipsilateral femoral neck fractures are serious and complicated injuries, which usually yield unsatisfactory results using conventional hip-preserving surgery. The key point of the management and prognosis mainly lies in femoral neck fractures. An apparent and consecutive relationship exists between femoral neck fractures and femoral head fracture-hip dislocation in such injuries. It is believed that disastrous triad of femoral head (DTFH) could summarize these specific injuries, and reflect the injury mechanism and prognostic characteristics. Based on our clinical observation

Simultaneous ipsilateral knee dislocation and hip fracture: A case report.

Hip fracture is one of the main causes of medical attendance in trauma centers. By contrast, knee dislocation is a challenging and limb-threatening injury. We report a case of a 68-year-old male who sustained a simultaneous ipsilateral hip fracture and knee dislocation after a low-energy fall. Popliteal artery and common peroneal nerve injuries were associated. Knee dislocation treatment included closed reduction, external fixation and popliteal artery repair. Hip hemiarthroplasty was performed using a direct anterior approach. Revision multiligament knee reconstruction surgery was not conside

Lateral versus conventional fasciotomy for prevention of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injury in total hip arthroplasty with direct anterior approach: a study protocol for a dual-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: An incision for total hip arthroplasty (THA) via the direct anterior approach (DAA) is generally made outside of the space between the sartorius and tensor fasciae latae muscles to prevent lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury. Anatomical studies have revealed that the LFCN courses between the sartorius and tensor fasciae latae muscles. When the LFCN branches radially while distributing in the transverse direction from the sartorius muscle to the tensor fasciae latae muscle, it is called the fan type. Studies suggest that damage to the fan type LFCN is unavoidable during co

Traumatic Inferior-Anterior Hip Dislocation in a 15-Year-Old Without Fracture: A Five-Year Follow-Up and Review of the Literature.

Traumatic hip dislocations in the pediatric population are relatively rare but potentially devastating injuries, with anterior hip dislocations being even less common. These injuries typically result from high-energy trauma and direct impact mechanisms, most frequently due to motor vehicle accidents and, to a lesser extent, sports-related injuries. In adolescents, hip dislocations are often associated with fractures of the acetabulum or femoral head, necessitating urgent reduction under general anesthesia. Delays exceeding six hours significantly increase the risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) o

Concurrent ipsilateral fractures of the hip and femoral shaft: a meta-analysis of 659 cases.

659 cases of concurrent, ipsilateral fractures in the hip and femoral shaft reported in 59 studies were analyzed. The causes were a road traffic accident in 78% and other types of high-energy traumas in 13% of the patients. This injury combination was rare in children. The median age was 34 years. 78% of the patients were men. One-third had multiple injuries, one-half had injuries of the ipsilateral knee and one-half had other lower limb injuries. The femoral neck fractures were most often basilar and the reported rate of avascular necrosis was 3%. The trochanteric fractures were intertrochant

Injury differences between small and large overlap frontal crashes.

Because small overlap impacts have recently emerged as a crash mode posing great injury risk to occupants, a detailed analysis of US crash data was conducted using the NASS/CDS and CIREN databases. Frontal crashes were subcategorized into small overlap impact (SOI) and large overlap impact (LOI) using crash and crush characteristics from the datasets. Injuries to head, spine, chest, hip and pelvis, and lower extremities were parsed and compared between crash types. MAIS 3+ occupants in NASS/CDS and CIREN demonstrated increased incidence of head, chest, spine, and hip/pelvis injuries in SOI com

Eccentric strengthening effect of hip-adductor training with elastic bands in soccer players: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Soccer players with weak hip-adductor muscles are at increased risk of sustaining groin injuries. Therefore, a simple hip-adductor strengthening programme for prevention of groin injuries is needed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effect of an 8-week hip-adductor strengthening programme, including one hip-adduction exercise, on eccentric and isometric hip-adduction strength, using elastic bands as external load. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy, sub-elite soccer players, mean (±SD) age of 22.1 (±3.3) years, were randomised to either training or control. During the mid-season b

Fractures and dislocations about the hip in head-injured adults.

Twenty-nine of 591 head-injured adults (4.9%) sustained concomitant injuries about the hip. Three hip injuries were undetected during initial hospitalization (10%). Sixteen patients (55%) developed varying amounts of heterotopic ossification about the injured hip. Eleven of 23 hips (41%) treated by nonoperative methods developed heterotopic ossification. Six hips underwent open reduction and five developed heterotopic bone (83%). The severity of injury, especially central acetabular and posterior fracture-dislocations, increased the occurrence and amount of heterotopic bone. Ipsilateral hemipl…
