[Physiopathology of neurotransmitter metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid in brain tumors].

The results in the group of III ventricle tumors, that is a decrease in the ventricular concentration of 5-HIAA in CSF, show that the hypothalamic metabolism of 5-HT is of importance for the concentration of 5-HIAA in the CSF. The results in posterior fossa tumors and in non communicating hydrocephalus (non tumor patients) for 5-HIAA and HVA confirm that the reabsorption of the metabolites from CSF occurs mainly in the caudal region of the ventricular system: the data in communicating hydrocephalus demonstrate that the intracranial hypertension can interfere by itself with the out transport me

Cerebrospinal fluid amine metabolites, tryptophan and clinical parameters in depression. Part 2. Psychopathological symptoms.

The group of 33 severely depressed female patients was divided into 3 equally large subgroups, separately according to their CSF 5-HIAA, HVA, tryptophan and total plasma tryptophan, and the severity of 17 operationally defined psychopathological symptoms was compared between the subgroups containing the highest and lowest biochemical values. Nonparametric statistical testing yielded significant results on several symptoms, when the subgroups were formed from CSF 5-HIAA and HVA. There was only one significant symptom difference between subgroups separated by CSF tryptophan and a few other diffe

Diagnosis and treatment of neurotransmitter disorders.

The neurotransmitter disorders represent an enigmatic and enlarging group of neurometabolic conditions caused by abnormal neurotransmitter m … retation merit special consideration. Diagnosis of disorders of monoamines requires analysis of CSF homovanillic acid, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, ortho-methyldopa, BH4, and neopterin. The delineation of new disorders with important therapeutic implications, such as cerebral folate deficiency and PNPO deficiency, serves to highlight the value of measuring CSF neuro …

Central effects of Tityus serrulatus and Tityus bahiensis scorpion venoms after intraperitoneal injection in rats.

A great number of studies on scorpion venoms associate their effects to the autonomic nervous system, and few data are available about their action on the central nervous system (CNS). The aim of this work was to evaluate some central effects after intraperitoneal injection of Tityus serrulatus or T. bahiensis scorpion venoms. The hippocampal concentration of some neurotransmitters and their metabolites were determined. Electroencephalographic and behavioral observations were performed, and all brains were removed for histopathological analysis of hippocampal areas. Both venoms induced electro

Neurotoxicity induced by prenatal exposure to MPTP on the monoaminergic and peptidergic systems of the marmoset brain.

The neurotoxicity induced by incidental prenatal exposure to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) was studied in three marmosets. The baby marmosets exposed in utero to MPTP looked normal in the first few weeks of life but around 8 to 10 weeks of life they started to behave abnormally and were sacrificed when they were 20 weeks old. A marked reduction in DA levels was found in the baby marmosets prenatally exposed to MPTP as compared to the corresponding age-matched controls and this was highly significant in the caudate nucleus, putamen, and nucleus accumbens. Serotonin content

Mechanisms of veratramine-induced 5-HT syndrome in mice.

Regional monoamine assays revealed that during veratramine-induced myoclonic movements, the contents of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the cerebral cortex were reduced with a slight increase in dopamine metabolites in the midbrain and brainstem. A similar tendency to decrease 5-HT and 5-HIAA contents was observed in the hypothalamus and hippocampus without increase in the contents of dopamine and its metabolites. Norepinephrine levels were not modified in any brain region at any time after the administration of the veratrum alkaloid. It was found that the

Aging-related changes in the nigrostriatal dopamine system and the response to MPTP in nonhuman primates: diminished compensatory mechanisms as a prelude to parkinsonism.

Aging is the most prominent risk factor for Parkinson's disease. Yet, consensus of how advancing age may predispose the dopamine (DA) system to parkinsonism is lacking. Three age ranges of female rhesus monkeys, 8-9, 15-17, and 21-31 years, received unilateral DA depletion with intracarotid 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Morphological and biochemical analyses of DA-depleted and intact hemispheres revealed three primary findings: (1) The intact striatum exhibited age-related declines in dopamine (DA) and homovanillic acid (HVA) that were present by middle age; (2) In the M…
