Femur fracture: characteristics of patients, treatment outcomes, and factors associated with good outcomes at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda. A retrospective review of hospital records of 2022.

BACKGROUND: Globally, physical injuries are the leading causes of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), morbidity, and mortality, and account for nearly four and a half million lives lost per year, approximately 8% of the world's annual deaths. In Uganda, physical injuries cause substantial public health problems that have reached epidemic proportions, with Boda-boda accidents being the leading cause. This study aimed to describe femur fractures, the characteristics of patients, treatment outcomes, and factors associated with good outcomes at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda. MATER

Identifying missed prevention opportunities: maternal and congenital syphilis in hospital records and birth certificates in California from 2011 to 2021.

OBJECTIVE: To examine maternal risk factors for congenital syphilis (CS). STUDY DESIGN: We used a retrospective, population-based cohort of births in California (2011-2021) with linked birth certificates and hospital records. Modified Poisson regression models with robust standard errors were used to assess characteristics associated with CS. Among dyads with CS, maternal syphilis documentation was also examined. RESULTS: Of 4,481,096 births, 4659 (0.1%) had maternal syphilis without CS, and 2608 (0.06%) had both maternal syphilis and CS. CS was associated with having public insurance, tobac…

Epidemiology and reporting of osteoporotic vertebral fractures in patients with long-term hospital records based on routine clinical CT imaging.

UNLABELLED: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures signify an increased risk of future fractures and mortality and can manifest the diagnosis of osteoporosis. We investigated the prevalence of vertebral fractures in routine CT of patients with long-term hospital records. Three out of ten patients showed osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VFs) corresponding to the highest rates reported in European population-based studies. INTRODUCTION: VFs are a common manifestation of osteoporosis, which influences future fracture risk. Their epidemiology has been investigated in population-based studies. However,…

Agreement between hospital discharge diagnosis codes and medical records to identify metastatic colorectal cancer and associated comorbidities in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Quality of coding to identify cancers and comorbidities through the French hospital diagnosis database (Programme de médicalisation des systèmes d'information, PMSI) has been little investigated. Agreement between medical records and PMSI database was evaluated regarding metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and comorbidities. METHODS: From 01/01/2013 to 06/30/2014, 74 patients aged≥65years at mCRC diagnosis were identified in Bordeaux teaching hospital. Data on mCRC and comorbidities were collected from medical records. All diagnosis codes (main, related and associated) registered

Retrospective study of human cystic echinococcosis in Italy based on the analysis of hospital discharge records between 2001 and 2012.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an important zoonotic parasitic infection. The European Centre for Disease Control highlights that Italy lacks a surveillance system for CE. Due to the lack of official data, we analysed the Hospital Discharge Records (HDRs) drawn from the National Ministry of Health. The aim of this study was to analyse data from the HDRs with CE-related diagnoses in Italy from 2001 to 2012 to assess the current status and trend of disease epidemiology. A total of 16,550 HDRs related to the admission of 10,682 Italian patients were examined. The HDRs were analysed according to th
