[Malnutrition and social isolation among elderly residents of city public housing].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine relations between malnutrition and social isolation among elderly residents of a city public housing facility. METHODS: The present participants were 442 residents aged 65 and older of a public housing facility in Nagoya city. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted regarding demographics, nutritional status, and social isolation. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment(®)-Short Form (MNA(®)). Combining "at risk for malnutrition" and "malnutrition," the status was classified into two grou…

The Family Unification Program: A Randomized-Controlled Trial of Housing Stability.

The study tests the short-term impact on housing stability of the Family Unification Program (FUP), a permanent housing program for child welfare- involved families at risk of separation from children due to inadequate housing. Families eligible for FUP (n = 150) received housing case management services as usual, and half were referred for permanent housing vouchers made available through FUP. Families referred for FUP secured more enriched home learning environments, while more precariously housed families exhibited greater housing, stability when referred for FUP. The intervention did not r…

Maternal depression as a risk factor for children's inadequate housing conditions.

Depression among mothers with young children is an important public health issue that not only has implications for their own well-being, but can also potentially affect their children's health and developmental trajectories. This study explored the extent to which maternal depression is a risk factor for inadequate housing conditions related to utilities, a noteworthy risk factor for poor child health. Using data on 2965 mothers and children from a national urban cohort of U.S. births in 1998-2000, we estimated multivariate logistic regression models of associations between maternal depressio…

Building trust with people receiving supported employment and housing first services.

OBJECTIVES: The developing literature on supported employment for people who have a mental illness and recent history of homelessness has yet to explore the relationship between clients and their employment specialists. The objective of the present article is to explore and understand the way in which service users experience supported employment services and how these experiences differ from those receiving usual services. METHOD: Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with 27 people from a randomized controlled trial of supported employment, 14 receiving supported employment,

Tenants with additional needs: when housing first does not solve homelessness.

BACKGROUND: At Home/Chez-Soi was a 24 month randomized controlled trial of Housing First (HF) conducted in five Canadian cities. AIMS: This article attempts to identify the characteristics of participants who experienced housing instability one year after entering HF. METHODS: Those defined as experiencing housing instability were housed <50% of the last 9 months of the first year, excluding time in institutions, unless they were housed 100% of the past 3 months. RESULTS: Only 13.5% of HF participants (n = 157/1162) met criteria for housing instability. Several variables were significant pr…

High Tuberculosis Strain Diversity Among New York City Public Housing Residents.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to better understand tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology among New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents, after a recent TB investigation identified patients who had the same TB strain. METHODS: The study population included all New York City patients with TB confirmed during 2001 through 2009. Patient address at diagnosis determined NYCHA residence. We calculated TB incidence, reviewed TB strain data, and identified factors associated with TB clustering. RESULTS: During 2001 to 2009, of 8953 individuals in New York City with TB, 512 (6%) had a NYCHA address. Among t…

Housing First is associated with reduced use of emergency medical services.

OBJECTIVE: Chronically homeless adults with severe alcohol problems are disproportionately burdened with health-care problems and are high utilizers of emergency medical services (EMS). Single-site Housing First (HF), which provides immediate, permanent, low-barrier, nonabstinence-based, supportive housing, has been associated with reduced publicly funded service utilization. The aims of the current study were to determine whether time spent in single-site HF predicted decreases in EMS contacts 2 years subsequent to single-site HF move-in, and to describe medical conditions and injuries associ…

What is "Support" in Supportive Housing: Client and Service Providers' Perspectives.

Supportive housing programs are proposed as a way of increasing housing access and stability for the chronically homeless, improving access to needed services, and decreasing vulnerability to HIV and other diseases. Little is known about residents' understandings of and experiences with different models of supportive housing and how they fit within residents' broader strategies to maintain housing. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 residents and 10 service providers from nine different supportive housing programs in Hartford, Connecticut. Data analysis explored residents' percept…

Effects of group housing on stress induced emotional and neuroendocrine alterations.

Chronic restraint stress can induce depressive and anxiety-like behavior and neurophysiological disturbances. The social living shows the health-promoting and stress-protective effects on both human and animal. However, whether group housing exerts effects on development of depression and anxiety induced by chronic restraint treatments and its detailed neuroendocrine mechanism remain unclear. Following repeated restraint, the anxiety and depression-like behaviors of single and group housing mice were examined using the elevated plus-maze, open field test and forced swimming test. The levels of…

Conceptualizing housing careers for vulnerable youth: implications for research and policy.

Research on the experiences of youth leaving foster care as they enter adulthood has identified their risk for homelessness and housing instability. Although this finding has been consistent, it has not received sufficient empirical or conceptual attention. In this article, we (a) review the recent findings on housing outcomes for former foster youth; (b) identify relevant theoretical frameworks to examine housing outcomes for these youth, with specific attention to the concept of housing career; (c) describe existing policy; and (d) propose further strategies for understanding and, therefore,…

Housing first for homeless persons with active addiction: are we overreaching?

CONTEXT: More than 350 communities in the United States have committed to ending chronic homelessness. One nationally prominent approach, Housing First, offers early access to permanent housing without requiring completion of treatment or, for clients with addiction, proof of sobriety. METHODS: This article reviews studies of Housing First and more traditional rehabilitative (e.g., "linear") recovery interventions, focusing on the outcomes obtained by both approaches for homeless individuals with addictive disorders. FINDINGS: According to reviews of comparative trials and case series report…

Physical and sexual abuse and unstable housing among adolescents with HIV.

Stable housing is a necessary component of treatment of adolescents with HIV. This study examines the housing status at two points in time of a sample of 224 adolescents with HIV seen at an adolescent medicine clinic in New York City. It addresses whether unstable housing is associated with several forms of abuse, and what factors predict continued instability. 38.6% (n = 86) had a prior history of unstable housing, reduced to 12.9% at the time of program entry. Multivariate logistic regression models predicting current and prior unstable housing revealed two variables related to both outcomes…

Sexual risk among impoverished women: understanding the role of housing status.

HIV/AIDS increasingly affects women, and housing status is important to understanding HIV risk behaviors among women. The goal of this study is to enhance understanding of the association between housing status and a key sexual risk behavior, having multiple sex partners, by investigating the extent to which housing status differences can be accounted for by hypothesized explanatory factors. In a probability sample of 833 women in Los Angeles, results indicated that homeless African American and Hispanic women had from two to almost five times greater odds than low-income housed women of havin…

Endocrine changes during group housing of primiparous sows in early pregnancy.

The effect of group housing sows during early pregnancy on maternal endocrine changes and on embryonic survival was studied. Twenty crossbred (Swedish Yorkshire x Swedish Landrace) primiparous sows were used. On day 11 +/- 1 of pregnancy 3 unacquainted sows were randomly assigned to a single pen measuring 3 m x 3 m in area. A fourth sow in each group was housed in an individual pen and used as a control. This procedure was repeated 5 times to collect data from 5 animals in each rank as well as in a control group. Blood samples were collected from the day before grouping to day 5 after grouping…

A model for predicting depression in elderly tenants of public housing.

To assess the prevalence of and risk factors for depression in an older population, the Multilevel Assessment Instrument (MAI) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered to 176 elderly residents of a public housing apartment building in Indianapolis. The 41 patients diagnosed by the CES-D as depressed had significantly lower scores on MAI measures of psychological adjustment, cognitive function, and physical health compared with the nondepressed respondents and were more likely to have had episodes of anxiety and depression in the year before the stud…

Ophthalmopathy in a broiler breeder flock reared in dark-out housing.

Eight 22-week-old broiler breeder replacements were presented from a flock experiencing a mild mortality problem. Approximately 2-3% of the birds were not getting onto the slats to eat or drink. The birds had been reared in dark-out houses under an experimental lighting schedule. Upon examination, several birds appeared blind or partially blind; others exhibited a photophobic response. Two birds lacked a unilateral menace reflex. No other gross abnormalities or lesions were noted. Histopathologic sections of the eyes revealed retinal degeneration and detachment with early degenerative lesions

Venom gland organogenesis in the common house spider.

Venom is a remarkable innovation found across the animal kingdom, yet the evolutionary origins of venom systems in various groups, including spiders, remain enigmatic. Here, we investigated the organogenesis of the venom apparatus in the common house spider, Parasteatoda tepidariorum. The venom apparatus consists of a pair of secretory glands, each connected to an opening at the fang tip by a duct that runs through the chelicerae. We performed bulk RNA-seq to identify venom gland-specific markers and assayed their expression using RNA in situ hybridisation experiments on whole-mount time-serie

Nonlupus Full House Nephropathy: A Systematic Review.

KEY POINTS: Nonlupus full house nephropathy is a rare, complex entity: confusion arises by the low-quality evidence and the lack of consensus on nomenclature. This systematic review supports that systemic lupus erythematosus and nonlupus full house nephropathy are distinct clinical entities, with comparable outcomes. The identification of three pathogenetic categories provides further clues for a shared clinical and diagnostic approach to the disease. BACKGROUND: The presence of a full house pattern at immunofluorescence on kidney biopsy in a patient without clinical and laboratory features o

Seronegative Full-house Nephropathy with Crohn's Disease.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major risk factor for mortality in SLE, and glomerular "full-house" immunofluorescence staining is a well-known characteristic of LN. However, some cases of non-lupus glomerulonephritis can also present with a "full-house" immunofluorescence pattern. We recently encountered a patient with full-house nephropathy (FHN) during adalimumab administration for Crohn's disease. IgA nephropathy or idiopathic FHN was diagnosed, and treatment with steroids was started, after which there was improvem
