Temporal variations of fluctuating asymmetry in wing size and shape of Triatoma infestans populations from northwest Argentina.

Environmentally-induced developmental instability has frequently been assessed using fluctuating asymmetry (FA) methods. For Triatoma infestans, the major vector of Chagas disease, the combined effects of host-feeding sources and habitats affected wing developmental instability depending on sex in Figueroa villages, northwest Argentina. Here we investigated whether habitat, sex, season/year and insecticide applications affected wing developmental instability in T. infestans populations from Amamá and other rural villages of northwest Argentina over a four-year period. We measured the occurrenc

Health disparities in the risk of severe acidosis: real-world evidence from the All of Us cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the health disparities across social determinants of health (SDoH) domains for the risk of severe acidosis independent of demographical and clinical factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case-control study (n = 13 310, 1:4 matching) is performed using electronic health records (EHRs), SDoH surveys, and genomics data from the All of Us participants. The propensity score matching controls confounding effects due to EHR data availability. Conditional logistic regressions are used to estimate odds ratios describing associations between SDoHs and the risk of acidosis

Engaging an unstably housed population with low-barrier buprenorphine treatment at a syringe services program: Lessons learned from Seattle, Washington.

Background: Clinic-imposed barriers can impede access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We evaluated a low-barrier buprenorphine … portion of enrolled patients demonstrated sustained retention and reductions in opioid use, despite housing instability and polysubstance use.

Rapid sperm acrosome reaction in the absence of acrosomal CD46 expression in promiscuous field mice (Apodemus).

There is pronounced promiscuity and sperm competition in long-tailed field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus). These mice have evolved unusual sperm behaviour favouring rapid fertilisation, including dynamic formation of sperm trains and their subsequent dissociation. The cell surface complement regulatory (CReg) protein CD46 is broadly expressed in eutherian mammals other than rodents, in which it is expressed solely on the spermatozoal acrosomal membrane. Ablation of the CD46 gene has been associated with a faster acrosome reaction (AR) rate in inbred laboratory mice. Here, we demonstrate that wild-

Application of natural language processing to identify social needs from patient medical notes: development and assessment of a scalable, performant, and rule-based model in an integrated healthcare delivery system.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and test a scalable, performant, and rule-based model for identifying 3 major domains of social needs (residential instability, food insecurity, and transportation issues) from the unstructured data in electronic health records (EHRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included patients aged 18 years or older who received care at the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) between July 2016 and June 2021 and had at least 1 unstructured (free-text) note in their EHR during the study period. We used a combination of manual lexicon curation and semiautomated lexicon creation for featur

Heatwaves and health vulnerabilities of older informal workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh: A qualitative study.

Climate change has intensified the frequency and severity of heatwaves, posing significant health and economic risks, especially for informal laborers in urban areas of low- and middle-income countries. This study examines the health impacts of heatwaves on older laborers in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, evaluates their adaptation strategies, and proposes context-specific measures to enhance resilience. Employing a reflexive thematic analysis, the research analyzed data from 21 in-depth interviews, 4 key informant interviews, and 2 focus group discussions. Five core themes were identified. Heatwaves

Within IPV-exposed households, caregiver substance use and housing instability were strong predictors of neglect and physical abuse, while financial hardship was inversely associated with emotional maltreatment (OR = 0.65). Type of trauma exposure and subsequent mental health Symptoms: Examining the role of social needs in TX-YDSRN youth.

Many youth experience potentially traumatic events and may go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For youth who develop PTSD, little research has examined the role of health-related social needs, like housing instability or food insecurity, on its development. The present study aimed to explore the types of traumatic experiences reported at baseline by youth and sought to explore the relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms and reported health-related social needs. Specifically, it aimed to determine if the effects of health-related social needs differed across demo…

Social Stability Relates Social Conditions to the Syndemic of Sex, Drugs, and Violence.

The distribution of violence, sexually transmitted infections, and substance use disorders is not random, but rather the product of disease, behavior, and social conditions that co-occur in synergistic ways (syndemics). Syndemics often disproportionately affect urban communities. Studies of syndemics, however, rarely apply consistent measures of social conditions. Here, the construct of social stability (SS) (housing, legal, residential, income, employment, and relationship stability) was evaluated as a consistent measure of social conditions related to sex, drug, and violence exposures in a n

Individual, psychosocial, and social correlates of unprotected anal intercourse in a new generation of young men who have sex with men in New York City.

OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of individual, psychosocial, and social factors with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among young men who have sex with men in New York City. METHODS: Using baseline assessment data from 592 young men who have sex with men participating in an ongoing prospective cohort study, we conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the associations between covariates and likelihood of recently engaging in UAI with same-sex partners. RESULTS: Nineteen percent reported recent UAI with a same-sex partner. In multivariable models, being in a curre

Neighborhood evictions, household children, and preterm birth among Black birthing people.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood evictions are a key component of community-level housing instability and disproportionately impact communities of color. Increased neighborhood evictions may be associated with increased preterm birth (PTB). Previous research suggests familial distress as a potential driver of increased PTB among Black birthing parents exposed to high neighborhood eviction rates. In this study, we explore whether the association of neighborhood evictions with PTB differs depending on the presence or absence of children in the household during pregnancy. METHODS: We used information fr…

Toxic Alcohol Poisoning: Emergency Department Recognition and Management in Patients With Complex Health and Housing Needs.

The found down inebriated patient is a frequent presentation in the emergency department. Although standard ethanol intoxication may be the primary clinical suspicion, a critical subset of these cases involves ingestion of a toxic alcohol-specifically, methanol, ethylene glycol, or isopropyl alcohol. These high-risk ingestions are disproportionately prevalent among patient populations facing severe social inequities, including those experiencing housing instability and behavioral health crises. In these groups, toxic alcohols are sometimes used as ethanol substitutes or for intentional self-ha…

Legal Financial Obligations: An Understudied Public Health Exposure.

The impacts of exposure to the criminal justice system on health-related outcomes are well studied in the U.S. However, although previous studies focus on the impacts of arrest, incarceration, and re-entry on health, they neglect a critical component of the criminal justice system: legal financial obligations. Legal financial obligations, which include fines, fees, and other surcharges, are levied at nearly every stage of the criminal justice process, entrench individuals into a cycle of poverty, and exacerbate known social determinants of health such as food and housing instability and loss o…
