Background: Lateral humeral condylar fractures often heal with some residual elbow deformity. However, details of angulation or tilting angle of the lateral condyle after the fracture have not been evaluated so far. Methods: Between 2008 and 2016, we followed up 80 mild fractures of the lateral humeral condyle for more than a year. Thirty fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with Kirschner wires. Fifty cases were treated with a long arm splint for 3 weeks (Fig. 1). The average age of the patients at the time of the injury was 5.5 years. The humerus-elbow-wrist

Many of the current techniques of internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures employ tension-band wires to achieve secure fixation, allowing immediate postoperative exercise of the affected limb. The addition of a cancellous lag screw placed from the humeral shaft into the humeral head may have several advantages. In particular, this lag screw does not violate the subacromial space and provides for impaction and initial stability between the head and shaft. The technique described herein has been used in 13 patients aged 54 to 86 years with two- and three-part fractures. This technique use

Periprosthetic humeral fractures represent a relevant complication of shoulder arthroplasty and the incidence of 0.5-3% is expected to increase given current demographic trends. Biomechanical aspects are considered in therapeutic decision-making and planning, including fracture location and morphology as well as patient-specific factors. These include among others osteoporosis and age, but also other comorbidities of the patient, such as nicotine abuse or obesity. The fracture classification follows the internationally recognized system developed by Sanchez-Sotelo und Athwal. Conservative trea

PurposeClinically, metastatic pathological fractures of the humeral shaft remain a challenging issue. Plate osteosynthesis and intramedullary nailing are common fixation methods; however, the optimal strategy remains debated, especially in patients with limited life expectancy where surgical goals include rapid pain relief, functional recovery, and fewer reoperations.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with metastatic humeral shaft fractures treated surgically during 2009-2019. Patients were grouped by plate osteosynthesis (n = 17) and antegrade intramedullary nailing (n = 10), and

Treating unstable proximal humeral fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis and limited compliance is still demanding for trauma surgeons. The failure rate of operative treatment is high. We studied the use of a new antegrade intramedullary humeral nail with special locking bolts for head fixation. The first 41 procedures in 39 patients with a mean age of 81 years (61-102) were analyzed. Half of the patients were mentally deranged. There were 16 two-part, 22 three-part, and 3 four-part fractures of the humeral head treated. After closed or partial open reduction, antegrade nailing was p

Distal humeral fractures are relatively rare and complex injuries. With appropriate preoperative planning and execution of surgical technique, good outcomes may be obtained in most patients. Patients should be counseled regarding loss of motion in these injuries, and elderly, osteoporotic patients with extensive comminution should be considered for total elbow arthroplasty as an alternative to open reduction and internal fixation.

Lateral humeral condyle fractures account for 17 % of the distal humeral condyle fractures. Displaced and/or rotated fractures require appropriate reduction and stabilisation. There are, however, a number of controversies in the surgical management of these patients. The aim of the present study was to review the results of patients with a displaced lateral humeral condyle fracture treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). We retrospectively reviewed children treated with ORIF of lateral humeral condyle fractures at a single institution over a period of 13 years. All cases were

BACKGROUND: Owing to the aging population, the incidence of hip fractures is increasing. While concomitant fractures are not uncommon, it is unclear how they influence subsequent function.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Therefore, we determined (1) the incidence, type and treatment of concomitant fractures accompanying hip fractures, (2) the length of hospital stay, (3) the impact of concomitant fractures on mortality and complication rate, and (4) patients' function.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 402 patients older than 60 years with hip fractures. We recorded the presence of concomitant fractu

Humeral shaft aseptic nonunions occur in 2% to 10% of patients managed conservatively and 10% to 15% of patients treated surgically. The complex muscular and neurovascular anatomy of the upper limb makes the surgical approach to the fracture site demanding and risky, especially when previous surgeries have been attempted. The clinical consequence of atrophic humeral shaft nonunions is a severe functional limitation that may significantly affect activities of daily living, especially in the elderly. The surgical treatment of humeral shaft nonunions is challenging for orthopedic surgeons. Patien

BACKGROUND: Thrower's fracture, a non-traumatic humerus fracture related to the throwing motion, has been reported in a few studies in the literature. To the authors' knowledge, there has been no report on an isolated medial condylar fracture of the distal humerus induced by the throwing motion to date. In this study, we provide a potential explanation to the pathomechanism of such a rare type of thrower's fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of a 17-year-old Asian adolescent male who suffered an isolated medial condylar fracture of the distal humerus after baseball pitching. A

From 1982 to 1987 we treated 85 extra-articular comminuted distal third humeral fractures in adults with prefabricated plastic braces. Of these, 15% were open fractures and 18% had initial peripheral nerve injury. On average, the sleeve was applied 12 days after injury and used for 10 weeks. There was 96% union, with no infections. All nerve injuries resolved or were improving at the latest examination. At union there was varus deformity averaging 9 degrees in 81% of patients, but loss of range of movement was minimal and functional results were good.

The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanical mechanisms behind throwing fractures and their relation to bone degeneration. Finite models were built based on three bone degeneration evaluation indexes. All models showed that the crack initiated at the morphological transition junction of the distal 1/3 of the humeral shaft. The initial crack line was lateral to the humerus and extended spirally at 45° with the humerus axis. The fracture torque of healthy humerus was about 63 N·m, with a fracture torque degree of about 12°, both decreasing with increasing bone degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Humeral lateral condyle fractures are common pediatric elbow injuries, with Jakob type III representing the most severe form. While open reduction and internal fixation is the standard treatment, consensus is lacking on the optimal fixation method. Inadequate fixation can lead to serious complications. The efficacy of absorbable internal fixation materials remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of different internal fixation materials for treating these fractures in children.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 51 children (39 male, 12 female; mean
