Iron availability strongly influences crop performance, yet the mechanisms in non-model horticultural species remain unclear. We combined morphological, physiological, and root transcriptome analyses to dissect the response of Capsicum annuum L. cultivar CA#8 to iron deficiency, low iron, and excess iron. Seedlings grown hydroponically under four iron supplies (0, 5, 25, and 150 μM EDTA-Fe) showed distinct shoot and root phenotypes: iron deficiency caused interveinal chlorosis and strong inhibition of root growth, excess iron induced leaf wrinkling with white spots and reduced root development

Clonal propagation of rust-resistant sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) is currently limited by extreme rooting recalcitrance and highly variable donor responses to nursery management. This study identified seed zone-specific nutritional sensitivities and evaluated rooting success; we hypothesized that northern seed sources would exhibit greater sensitivity to high nutrient loads and that stable microclimates would outperform high-intensity rooting systems. In Study 1, seedlings from five United States Department of Agriculture seed zones were grown for 27 weeks in five nutrient solutions (

Escalating heavy metal contamination of aquatic environments presents a significant threat to ecosystem integrity and public health, yet existing treatment technologies remain economically and technically inadequate for the efficient removal of low-concentration metal pollutants from wastewater. This study evaluated the phytoremediation potential of two macrophytes, Hymenachne amplexicaulis (Olive Hymenachne) and Pogonatherum paniceum (Bamboo Grass), for the removal of cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) from synthetic wastewater under hydroponic conditions. Experiments were conducted over 21 days un

The symbiotic interaction between soybean (Glycine max) and Bradyrhizobium japonicum results in the formation of root nodules, specialized organs that house nitrogen-fixing bacteria converting atmospheric N2 into plant-accessible ammonia (NH3). Accurate quantification of nodule traits is essential for understanding host-microbe interactions and genetic determinants of nodulation. However, traditional manual or semi-quantitative approaches are labor-intensive, subjective, and unsuitable for large-scale studies. Here, we present a high-throughput phenotyping pipeline based on the YOLO deep learn

Plant viruses affect production through symptom induction in host plants. These symptoms could partially arise from nutrient deprivation: The resource competition hypothesis posits that massive viral replication deprives hosts of essential nutrients, yet direct evidence for phosphorus (P) competition is lacking. Moreover, it is reported that biotic stresses can lead to alterations on P metabolism. Using a hydroponic system enabling separate analysis of shoots and roots in adult Arabidopsis thaliana plants, we investigated whether Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) drawed significant P internal pools l

Climate-exacerbated urban waterlogging imposes severe hypoxic stress on mesophytes. However, whether mesophytes possess dissolved oxygen (DO)-driven mechanisms for adaptive structural and physiological remodeling remains poorly understood. We conducted a hydroponic experiment with four representative mesophyte species (Gardenia jasminoides, Murraya paniculata, Ixora chinensis, and Heptapleurum actinophyllum 'Variegata') across four DO gradients (0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8 mg/L). Plant growth, physiology, and root anatomy were measured, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to disentan

Nanoparticles (NPs) are becoming more commonly used in agricultural practices for cultivating plants under Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). The foliar application of copper oxide (CuO) NPs can enhance the production of bioactive compounds in lettuce without adversely affecting yield. However, there is a lack of data regarding the effects of NPs on plants under various lighting conditions, which is a crucial aspect of CEA. The study aims to find out how different lighting conditions can lead to Cu accumulation, to determine the effects of CuO NPs on lettuce growth, antioxidant potentia

Salinity is one of the most harmful abiotic factors limiting crop productivity. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide biostimulant able to alleviate salt stress, but its efficiency depends on its physicochemical properties, which remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to determine whether two chemically distinct forms of chitosan, i.e., high-molecular-weight chitosan (ChT) and chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChL), differentially mitigate the adverse effects of NaCl-induced salinity in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown hydroponically under control conditions o

Phytocapping offers a sustainable approach for managing exposed tailings by mitigating pollutant spread and enhancing phytoremediation. This study investigates the potential of Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) as a pioneering plant for rehabilitating tailings from an open-pit lead-zinc mine in Southwest China. Our findings demonstrate that Bermudagrass significantly improved soil quality and multifunctionality compared to adjacent bare tailings. Soil improvements included increases in organic matter (107%), total and available nitrogen (50% and 110%, respectively), available phosphorus (170%),

Magnesium plays a vital role in enhancing plant resilience under salt stress. However, its specific function in maintaining ion homeostasis, particularly in regulating sodium uptake, remains unclear. Recognizing that magnesium deficiency leads to increased potassium uptake and accumulation, and given that sodium and potassium possess the same charge, we hypothesize that salt stress disrupts ion homeostasis to a greater extent in magnesium-deficient plants compared to those deficient in potassium. To test this hypothesis, Vicia faba plants were cultivated hydroponically and subjected to moderat

Hydroponic experiment was conducted to explore the effects of two nitrogen (N) levels with five nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) ratios on the growth status and Cd migration patterns of wheat seedlings under Cd5 and Cd30 level. Results showed that higher Cd were detrimental to the growth, absorption of K and Ca, expression of genes mediating NO3--N and NH4+-N transport, which also increased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in shoots and roots of wheat seedlings. Higher N treatment alleviated the inhibitory effects of Cd stress on the bio

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn) content is of great importance in healthy human diet, crop productivity and stress tolerance in soils with zinc deficiency. The genes used to increase yield per unit area such as semi-dwarf 1 (sdw1) is commonly considered to reduce mineral content of grain.
METHODS: In the present study, influence of sdw1.d, a widely used allele for short plant height in barley breeding, on zinc accumulation and tolerance to zinc deficiency were investigated. A near isogenic line of sdw1.d allele, its recurrent parent Tokak 157/37 and donor parent Triumph were grown in zinc-deficient and

Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a plant species that can express mechanisms of tolerance to copper (Cu) toxicity. Therefore, the agronomical approach of intercropping system with ryegrass may represent a promising tool to limit the onset of Cu toxicity symptoms in the other intercropped plants species, particularly when an inadequate nutrient availability like iron (Fe) shortage is also concurrently present. This study aimed at assessing the mechanisms involved in the mitigation of Cu phytotoxicity and the stress effects on plant growth, root morphology and nutrition of ryegrass fertilized wit

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are nonessential and toxic elements in rice that often occur together in contaminated paddy field soils. To understand whether rice has a common molecular response mechanism against Cd and As toxicity, 30-day seedlings (Oryza sativa L. indica) were exposed separately to Cd and As3+ in hydroponic cultures for up to 7 days. Root transcriptomic analysis of plants exposed to Cd and As for 3 days revealed that a total of 2224 genes in rice roots responded to Cd stress, while 1503 genes responded to As stress. Of these, 841 genes responded to both stressors. The genes i

Azospirillum brasilense was reported to up-regulate iron (Fe) uptake mechanisms, such as Fe reduction and rhizosphere acidification, in both Fe sufficient and deficient cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). Strategy I plants take up both Fe and copper (Cu) after their reduction mediated by the ferric-chelate reductase oxidase (FRO) enzyme. Interestingly, in cucumber genome only one FRO gene is reported. Thus, in the present study we applied a bioinformatics approach to identify the member of cucumber FRO gene family and allowed the identification of at least three CsFRO genes, one of which was

Inhibitor formation is a serious complication of factor VIII (FVIII) replacement therapy for the X-linked bleeding disorder haemophilia A and occurs in 20%-30% of patients. No prophylactic tolerance protocol currently exists. Although we reported oral tolerance induction using FVIII domains expressed in tobacco chloroplasts, significant challenges in clinical advancement include expression of the full-length CTB-FVIII sequence to cover the entire patient population, regardless of individual CD4+ T-cell epitope responses. Codon optimization of FVIII heavy chain (HC) and light chain (LC) increas

The unprecedented rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration and injudicious fertilization or heterogeneous distribution of Mg in the soil warrant further research to understand the synergistic and holistic mechanisms involved in the plant growth regulation. This study investigated the influence of elevated CO2 (800 μL L(-1)) on physiological and transcriptomic profiles in Arabidopsis cultured in hydroponic media treated with 1 μM (low), 1000 μM (normal) and 10,000 μM (high) Mg2+. Following 7-d treatment, elevated CO2 increased the shoot growth and chlorophyll content under both low and normal Mg s

Trichoderma virens is a biocontrol agent used in agriculture to antagonize pathogens of crop plants. In addition to direct mycoparasitism of soil-borne fungal pathogens, T. virens interacts with roots. This interaction induces systemic resistance (ISR), which reduces disease in above-ground parts of the plant. In the molecular dialog between fungus and plant leading to ISR, proteins secreted by T. virens provide signals. Only a few such proteins have been characterized previously. To study the secretome, proteins were characterized from hydroponic culture systems with T. virens alone or with m
