Hair lightening in an hemodialysis patient treated by heptaminol (heptamyl).

Hair lightening occurred in a patient treated with heptaminol (heptamyl). This patient had chronic renal failure and had been undergoing hemodialysis since 2003. The hair hypopigmentation reversed after stopping the drug. The mechanism of the hair color modification is not understood.

Nevoid hypertrichosis and hypomelanosis.

A girl with multiple lesions of nevoid hypertrichosis and linear hypopigmentation following Blaschko's lines is presented. She had no extracutaneous anomalies. We hypothesize that this unusual coexistence of skin lesions may represent a further example of "twin spotting".

Successful treatment of progressive macular hypomelanosis.

Progressive Macular Hypomelanosis (PMH) is a common but often misdiagnosed disorder of acquired hypopigmentation. An adolescent female presented with irregular, hypopigmented patches ultimately diagnosed as PMH. Complete repigmentation was achieved with narrowband UVB phototherapy, benzoyl peroxide wash, and clindamycin lotion.

Comparison of photographic methods.

BACKGROUND: Photo documentation has become increasing important in medicine, especially given the demand for cosmetic procedures. Standard p … in each type of photography compared to standard photography in terms of subsurface skin features, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation, and rhytids. RESULTS: 9 subjects completed the study. Overall, of the 3 photographic methods compared to standard photography, UV passing most enhanced the visualization of subsurface features and hypopigmentation, with increase …

Reproducibility of dermoscopic features of congenital melanocytic nevi.

BACKGROUND: The dermoscopic features of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) have recently been described, and some structures have been propos … ctures. Interobserver agreement was highly satisfactory for network, globules/dots, blotches, focal hypopigmentation, skin furrow hypopigmentation and follicles; it was satisfactory for perifollicular hypopigmentation, vessels and target vessels, and barely satisfactory for focal thickening of network lines, target globules and hyperpigmented areas; finally, it wa …

Postzygotic inactivating mutation of KIF13A located at chromosome 6p22.3 in a patient with a novel mosaic neuroectodermal syndrome.

Hypomelanosis of Ito (HMI) is part of a neuroectodermal syndrome characterized by distinctive skin manifestations with or without multisystemic involvements. In our undiagnosed diseases program, we have encountered a 3-year-old girl presenting with characteristic skin hypopigmentation suggesting HMI and developmental delay. An exome and genome approach utilizing next-generation sequencing revealed a heterozygous de novo frameshift variant in the KIF13A gene, i.e., NM_022113.6: c.2357dupA, resulting in nonsense-mediated decay. The low mutant allelic ratio suggested that the mutation has occurre…

Current and emerging treatments for albinism.

Albinism is a group of rare inherited disorders arising from impairment of melanin biosynthesis. The reduction of melanin synthesis leads to hypopigmentation of the skin and eyes. A wide range of ophthalmic manifestations arise from albinism, including reduction of visual acuity, nystagmus, strabismus, iris translucency, foveal hypoplasia, fundus hypopigmentation, and abnormal decussation of retinal ganglion cell axons at the optic chiasm. Currently, albinism is incurable, and treatment aims either surgically or pharmacologically to optimize vision and protect the skin; however, novel therapie…

[Ophthalmologic manifestations of Waardenburg syndrome].

The Waardenburg syndrome is a group of rare genetic diseases, which clinical manifestations include neurosensory hearing loss, diminished pigmentation of forelock in the frontal region, iris heterochromia, medial canthus dystopia, and the presence of such changes in first-line relatives. The article presents a clinical case of type I Waardenburg syndrome, which developed de novo in a family. This case is unique in its combination of complete bilateral iris heterochromia and impaired choroidal pigmentation. The choroid did not only have hypopigmentation zones, but also large areas of hyper- and…

The activation of melanogenesis by p-CREB and MITF signaling with extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields on B16F10 melanoma.

Melanin in the skin determines the skin color, and decreased melanin causes many hypopigmentation disorders and increased damage to skin by ultraviolet B (UVB) light irradiation. Here, we stimulate melanogenesis in B16F10 melanoma cells by using specific frequencies of ELF-EMFs. In this study, we focus on the melanogenesis of EMF-ELFs and find that 60-75Hz ELF-EMFs upregulate melanin synthesis by stimulated expression of tyrosinase and TRP-1 through inhibition of phosphorylation ERK, activation of CREB, and MITF up-regulation in B16F10 melanoma cells. The results show that 60-75Hz ELF-EMFs sig…

Griscelli syndrome type 2: a novel mutation in RAB27A gene with different clinical features in 2 siblings: a diagnostic conundrum.

Griscelli syndrome type 2 (GS2) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the RAB27A gene. It is characterized by cutaneous hypopigmentation, immunodeficiency, and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. We describe 2 brothers who had GS2 with clinically diverse manifestations. The elder brother presented with a purely neurological picture, whereas the younger one presented with fever, pancytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and erythema nodosum. Considering that cutaneous hypopigmentation was a common feature between the brothers, genetic analysis for Griscelli syndrome was performed…

Angiokeratomas in Fabry's disease and Fordyce's disease: successful treatment with copper vapour laser.

Two patients with multiple angiokeratomas on genitalia and thighs, one with Fabry's disease and one with Fordyce's disease, were treated with copper vapour laser light of 578 nm wavelength. The result was desirable, with destruction and disappearance of the lesions and minimal scarring and posttreatment hyper- or hypopigmentation.

Heterochromia of the Hair and Eyelashes with Blaschkoid Dyspigmentation.

Heterochromia of the hair involves the presence of two distinctive colors of scalp hair in one individual. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl with reddish streaks of scalp hair, heterochromia of the eyelashes, and cutaneous hypopigmentation following the lines of Blaschko.

Atrophie blanche-like scarring after pulsed dye laser treatment.

Pulsed dye laser treatment is well established for the treatment of port-wine stains and other vascular skin lesions. Although hyperpigmentation is quite common, other side effects such as hypopigmentation and atrophic scarring occur infrequently, and hypertrophic scarring is rare.

Infant with abnormal pigmentation, malformations, and immune deficiency.

An infant had swirling hyperpigmentation, streaks of hypopigmentation, abnormal T-cell function, cleft palate, patent ductus arteriosus, and arrhinencephaly. This pattern of abnormalities is distinct from other disorders with abnormal pigmentation and malformations; such as incontinentia pigmenti, incontinentia pigmenti achromians, and the epidermal nevus syndrome.

Palmoplantar depigmentation in Macaca fascicularis following Blaschko linear pattern.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome, characterized by streaks and swirls of hypopigmentation arranged in a Blaschkoid pattern. Other associated anomalies are observed. We report a case of a male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) who presented the characteristic of hypomelanosis of Ito with palmoplantar involvement and polythelia.
