Pattern glare sensitivity distinguishes subclinical autism and schizotypy.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder are distinct neurodevelopmental disorders sharing clinically relevant behaviours. However, early sensory responses show divergent responses. Individuals with schizophrenia typically exhibit cortical hypo-excitability whereas individuals with autism show cortical hyperexcitability. Identifying reliable neurobiological differences between the disorders can diminish misdiagnosis and optimise treatments. METHODS: The pattern glare test (PGT) is a simple measure of behavioural hyperexcitability. It measures the number of illusions seen in a …

Illusory finger stretching and somatosensory responses in participants with chronic hand-based pain.

Current pharmaceutical interventions for chronic pain are reported to be minimally effective, leading researchers to investigate non-pharmaceutical avenues for chronic pain treatment. One such avenue is resizing illusions delivered using augmented reality. These illusions resize the affected body part through stretching or shrinking manipulations and have been shown to give analgesic effects; however, the neural underpinnings of these illusions remain undefined. Steady-state evoked potentials (SSEPs) have been studied within populations without chronic pain undergoing hand-based resizing illus…

Delusional parasitosis with shared psychotic features secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency and mild cognitive impairment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Visual illusions are misperceptions of real external stimuli and, when persistent, may indicate underlying neurological or metabolic disorders. Delusional parasitosis is characterized by a fixed belief of infestation without medical evidence and may occur secondary to medical conditions. However, the relationship between visual illusion-related perceptual abnormalities and delusion formation, particularly in reversible metabolic states such as vitamin B12 deficiency, remains unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man presented with a persistent belief that mites infested his b…

Visual networks: Electric brain stimulation and diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the networks of visual functional areas using electric brain stimulation (EBS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Thirteen patients with intractable focal epilepsy in which visual functional areas were identified by EBS were enrolled. An electric stimulation at 50Hz was applied to electrodes during several tasks. DTI was used to identify subcortical fibers originating from the visual functional areas identified by EBS. RESULT: The electrical stimulation induced three types of visual symptoms: visual illusions (change of vision), visual hall…

Motion signals deflect relative positions of moving objects.

The perceived relative position of a moving object is frequently shifted as compared to the relative position of the object in the real world. The illusions have traditionally been explained by temporal models that influence the perceptual latency of visual objects. However, another compelling theory has recently been proposed on the basis of spatial models that directly influence the coded location of visual objects. In this study, spatial models were further supported by three different types of illusions composed of apparent motions, in which the perceived relative positions of stationary b…

Hypnotic suggestion versus sensory modulation of bodily awareness.

Bodily awareness arises from somatosensory, vestibular, and visual inputs but cannot be reduced to these incoming sensory signals. Cognitive factors are known to also impact bodily awareness, though their specific influence is poorly understood. Here we systematically compared the effects of sensory (bottom-up) and cognitive (top-down) manipulations on the estimated size of body parts. Toward this end, in a repeated-measures design, we sought to induce the illusion that the right index finger was elongating by vibrating the biceps tendon of the left arm whilst participants grasped the tip of t

Mental representation of space in vestibular patients with otolithic or rotatory vertigo.

In previous studies, we had observed that the occurrence of geometric illusions was reduced when healthy observers were tilted relative to gravity or placed in microgravity. We hypothesized that the alteration of the gravitational (otolith) input was responsible for this change, presumably because of a connection between vestibular and visual-spatial cognitive functions. In this study, we repeated these experiments in vestibular patients who presented signs of otolith disorders. In agreement with the microgravity data, geometric illusions based on horizontal, vertical, and oblique lines were l…

Recent research on bodily self-consciousness has assumed that it consists of three distinct components: the experience of owning a body (bod … ence from patients with altered body perception and work on a variety of multisensory, body-related illusions, such as the rubber hand illusion, the full body illusion, the body swap illusion and the enfacement illusion. We conclude by providing a preliminary synthesis of the data on bodily self-consciousness and its neural correlates.

Study of Geometric Illusory Visual Perception - A New Perspective in the Functional Evaluation of Children With Strabismus.

Despite the various perceptual-motor deficits documented in strabismus, there is a paucity of studies evaluating visual illusions in patients with strabismus. The aim of this study was to examine how the illusionary perception occurs in children/adolescents (10-15 years old) with strabismus with referral for surgery to correct ocular deviations. A controlled cross-sectional study was carried out in which 45 participants with strabismus and 62 healthy volunteers aged 10-15 years were evaluated. The behavioral response to three geometric illusions [Vertical-Horizontal illusion, Müller-Lyer illus…

Reduction in EEG theta power as a potential marker for spatial disorientation during flight.

During flight, spatial disorientation (SD) commonly occurs when a pilot's perception conflicts with the aircraft's actual motion, attitude, or position. A prevalent form of SD is the somatogyral illusion, which is elicited by constant speed rotation and causes a false perception of motion in the opposite direction when the rotation ceases. This research aimed to investigate changes in brain activity that occur when experiencing a somatogyral illusion by simulating conditions closely mimicking flight conditions to gain insight into how to better manage this illusion during flight. In the study,

Grasping behavior in schizophrenia suggests selective impairment in the dorsal visual pathway.

This study frames anomalous functional brain organization in schizophrenia (SCZ) within an evolutionary model of brain development, the dual … research has shown that, normally, perceptual estimations of object size are susceptible to visual illusions, whereas goal-directed actions are resistant. The authors hypothesized that, unlike control participants, SCZ patients' actions would be susceptible to the illusion, reflecting dorsal stream dysfunction. Here, 42 SCZ patients and 42 healthy controls …

The role of the cerebellum in dynamic changes of the sense of body ownership: a study in patients with cerebellar degeneration.

The sense of the body is deeply rooted in humans, and it can be experimentally manipulated by inducing illusions in at least two aspects: a subjective feeling of ownership and a proprioceptive sense of limb position. Previous studies mapped these different aspects onto anatomically distinct neuronal regions, with the ventral premotor cortex processing subjective experience of ownership and the inferior parietal lobule processing proprioceptive calibration. Lines of evidence suggest an involvement also of the cerebellum, but its precise role is not clear yet. To investigate the contribution of …

Illusory arm movements activate cortical motor areas: a positron emission tomography study.

Vibration at approximately 70 Hz on the biceps tendon elicits a vivid illusory arm extension. Nobody has examined which areas in the brain are activated when subjects perceive this kinesthetic illusion. The illusion was hypothesized to originate from activations of somatosensory areas normally engaged in kinesthesia. The locations of the microstructurally defined cytoarchitectonic areas of the primary motor (4a and 4p) and primary somatosensory cortex (3a, 3b, and 1) were obtained from population maps of these areas in standard anatomical format. The regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was mea

Improved feasibility of astronaut short-radius artificial gravity through a 50-day incremental, personalized, vestibular acclimation protocol.

The "Coriolis" cross-coupled (CC) illusion has historically limited the tolerability of utilizing fast-spin rate, short-radius centrifugation for in-flight artificial gravity. Previous research confirms that humans acclimate to the CC illusion over 10 daily sessions, though the efficacy of additional training is unknown. We investigated human acclimation to the CC illusion over up to 50 daily sessions of personalized, incremental training. During each 25-min session, subjects spun in yaw and performed roll head tilts approximately every 30 s, reporting the presence or absence of the illusion w

Sense Perception and Its Disorders.

Assessing sense perception in the context of the mental status examination involves the ruling out of negative disorders of perception, followed by an exploration of positive disorders of perception. Positive disorders of perception are divided into 3 main groups, comprising hallucinations, illusions, and sensory distortions. Of these, illusions tend to have little clinical relevance (save for a few notable exceptions) whereas hallucinations and sensory distortions come in many subtypes that often do have diagnostic implications. A successful execution of this part of the mental status examina…

Involvement of ordinary what and where auditory cortical areas during illusory perception.

The focus of the present study is on the relationships between illusory and non-illusory auditory perception analyzed at a biological level. To this aim, we investigate neural mechanisms underlying the Deutsch's illusion, a condition in which both sound identity ("what") and origin ("where") are deceptively perceived. We recorded magnetoencephalogram from healthy subjects in three conditions: (a) listening to the acoustic sequence eliciting the illusion (ILL), (b) listening to a monaural acoustic sequence mimicking the illusory percept (MON), and (c) listening to an acoustic sequence similar t

Head-centred motion perception in the ageing visual system.

Stationary objects appear to move in the opposite direction to a pursuit eye movement (Filehne illusion) and moving objects appear slower when pursued (Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon). Both illusions imply that extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals lead to lower estimates of speed than corresponding retinal motion signals. Intriguingly, the velocity (i.e. speed and direction) of the Filehne illusion depends on the age of the observer, especially for brief display durations (Wertheim and Bekkering, 1992). This suggests relative signal size changes as the visual system matures. To test the signal-size…

Human Occipital and Parietal GABA Selectively Influence Visual Perception of Orientation and Size.

GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in human brain. The level of GABA varies substantially across individuals, and this variability is associated with interindividual differences in visual perception. However, it remains unclear whether the association between GABA level and visual perception reflects a general influence of visual inhibition or whether the GABA levels of different cortical regions selectively influence perception of different visual features. To address this, we studied how the GABA levels of parietal and occipital cortices related to interindividual differences in
