Chronic non-specific low back pain (NSCLBP) is linked to sensorimotor dysfunctions and altered motor planning, likely due to neuroplastic changes. Motor imagery (MI) and movement execution share neural pathways, but the relationship between imagined and executed movements in NSCLBP patients remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess the temporal congruence between imagined and executed movements in NSCLBP sufferers, with secondary goals of investigating group differences in movement chronometry, psychological well-being, and disability, as well as possible correlations among these facto

The qualities of remembered experiences are often used to inform "reality monitoring" judgments, our ability to distinguish real and imagined events. Previous experiments have tended to investigate only whether reality monitoring decisions are accurate or not, providing little insight into the extent to which reality monitoring may be affected by qualities of the underlying mnemonic representations. We used a continuous-response memory precision task to measure the quality of remembered experiences that underlie two different types of reality monitoring decisions: self/experimenter decisions t

Maljkovic and Nakayama (1994) found that pop-out search performance is more efficient when a singleton target feature repeats rather than switches from 1 trial to the next-an effect known as priming of pop-out (PoP). They also reported findings indicating that the PoP effect is strongly automatic, as it was unaffected by knowledge of the upcoming target color. In the present study, we examined the impact of visual imagery on the PoP effect. Participants were instructed to imagine a target color that was opposite that of the preceding trial (e.g., if the prior target was red, then imagine green

How motor maps are organized while imagining actions is an intensely debated issue. It is particularly unclear whether motor imagery relies on action-specific representations in premotor and posterior parietal cortices. This study tackled this issue by attempting to decode the content of motor imagery from spatial patterns of Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals recorded in the frontoparietal motor imagery network. During fMRI-scanning, 20 right-handed volunteers worked on three experimental conditions and one baseline condition. In the experimental conditions, they had to imagine three

Although the Drosophila melanogaster erect wing (ewg) gene is broadly transcribed in adults, an unusual posttranscriptional regulation involving alternative and inefficient splicing generates a 116-kDa EWG protein in neurons, while protein expression elsewhere or of other isoforms is below detection at this stage. This posttranscriptional control is important, as broad expression of EWG can be lethal. In this paper, we show that ELAV, a neuron-specific RNA binding protein, is necessary to regulate EWG protein expression in ELAV-null eye imaginal disc clones and that ELAV is sufficient for EWG

An induction of an imagined visual sensation with the eyes closed can be regarded as a form of self-suggestion in the state of wakefulness. On receiving an instruction on imagining a visual sensation most healthy persons show a sharp weakening of disappearance of the alpha-rhythm depression on the EEG (in distinction from subjects who have not had hyperventilation). These findings point to an importance of using electroencephalography in combination with hyperventilation in psychotherapeutic practice for objective estimation of the effect of suggestion in wakefulness.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging adults on the autism spectrum struggle with a variety of social and environmental stressors, putting them at a higher risk for alcohol use problems (Brosnan & Adams, 2020). However, findings examining the relationship between autism and alcohol use outcomes remain conflicting, suggesting the need to examine specific dimensions of autism in relation to alcohol use. Addressing this gap, the current study examines how dimensions of autism, including social skills, switching, routines, imagination, and pattern fixation, may relate to alcohol use in a non-clinical sample of c…

Aphantasia is the inability to experience mental imagery during full wakefulness without any prominent perceptual deficits. Visual aphantasia is associated with differences in distributed brain networks, but its neurobiological underpinnings remain a mystery. In particular, aphantasia may arise due to impairments in the top-down control over visual imagination. We predicted that this in turn would prevent the brains of aphantasic participants from differentiating neural activity encoding the contents of imagination from the background noise of resting activity, particularly within the ventral …

Previous reports indicate that some patients with eating disorders have alexithymic characteristics, including affect deficit states and paucity of imagination. This study evaluated whether nonhospitalized patients with bulimia nervosa had elevated ratings of alexithymia in comparison to age-matched controls, and whether severity of bulimic symptoms was correlated with elevations in alexithymia ratings. Because alexithymia may be secondary to concurrent depression, this study was limited to patients with bulimia nervosa who were free of major depression. The authors compared alexithymia rating…

Visual analogue scales (VAS) of different lengths (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm) and with different end-phrases (troublesome, miserable, intense, unbearable and worst pain imaginable) were used to record pain in 50 male and 50 female patients with pulpitis or pericoronitis. All 100 patients successfully completed the questionnaire. High correlation was found between the scores on all the scales. Scales of length 10 or 15 cm had the smallest measurement error. The scale with the end-phrase 'worst pain imaginable' was found to be the best choice for comparing present pain or worst pain between different

Source confusion refers to a person's failure to distinguish whether an event has been actually seen or simply imagined. Nevertheless, prior research has demonstrated a reduction of source confusion for negative arousing information. According to the emotional-congruence effect, this emotional benefit is likely observed in patients suffering from chronic pain. This hypothesis was tested on 15 patients suffering of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and 15 healthy women. In a source-monitoring task, participants had to decide whether positive, negative, and neutral words were imagined or seen with a p

Recent research suggests that the mere intention to perform a painful movement can elicit pain-related fear. Based on these findings, the present study aimed to determine whether imagining a movement that is associated with pain (CS+) can start to elicit conditioned pain-related fear as well and whether pain-related fear elicited by imagining a painful movement can spread towards novel, similar but distinct imagined movements. We proposed a new experimental paradigm that integrates the left-right hand judgment task (HJT) with a differential fear conditioning procedure. During Acquisition, one

The authors take inspiration from a case of hysterical psychosis to illustrate a typical condition of this evocative disease: the symbolic language of hysteria, conjurer of archetypical images. The authors encourage the clinician not to decode such aspects in rational analytical terms, rather to have a more wide-open approach that promotes the emergence of the individual unconscious, reconnecting with the collective imagination. This approach could help psychiatrists better understand a subject's inner experiences and interpersonal behavior.

King James I of England (1566-1625) had unusually wide interests in new concepts about mental and physical diseases during the early seventeenth-century. He issued medical opinions about magic, witchcraft, the bubonic plague, hysteria, unconscious fits, sleepwalking, smoking, the "King's Evil", and many other medico-psychological symptoms and treatments which caught his imagination. In his didactic way, James's continuing studies of medical abnormalities of the body and mind revealed his great concern about the health of his people.

Myths are the keystone of mythology. They are interpretations of events that have been told as stories and legends for thousands of years, inherited from generation to generation, and have reached the present day. Although most myths are considered figments of the imagination or fictitious legends, all of them contain references to facts from the time they occurred. Mythology, which is a collection of figments of imagination concerning nature and human beings, is a product of human effort to perceive, explain, and interpret the universe and the world, much like science. The interaction between…

Over the past decade, many researchers have come up with different implementations of systems for decoding covert or imagined speech from EEG (electroencephalogram). They differ from each other in several aspects, from data acquisition to machine learning algorithms, due to which, a comparison between different implementations is often difficult. This review article puts together all the relevant works published in the last decade on decoding imagined speech from EEG into a single framework. Every important aspect of designing such a system, such as selection of words to be imagined, number of

Episodic simulation - the mental construction of a possible future event - has been consistently associated with enhanced activity in a set of neural regions referred to as the core network. In the current functional neuroimaging study, we assessed whether members of the core network are differentially associated with the subjective experience of future events (i.e., vividness) versus the objective content comprising those events (i.e., the amount of episodic details). During scanning, participants imagined future events in response to object cues. On each trial, participants rated the subject

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate: (1) the effects of a stroke on motor imagery vividness as measured by the Kinesthetic and Visual Imagery Questionnaire (KVIQ-20); (2) the influence of the lesion side; and (3) the symmetry of motor imagery.
METHODS: Thirty-two persons who had sustained a stroke, in the right (n = 19) or left (n = 13) cerebral hemisphere, and 32 age-matched healthy persons participated. The KVIQ-20 assesses on a 5-point ordinal scale the clarity of the image (visual scale) and the intensity of the sensations (kinesthetic scale) that the subjects are able to

This article explores aspects of a homeless man's everyday life and his use of material objects to maintain a sense of place in the city. We are interested in the complex functions of walking, listening and reading as social practices central to how this man forges a life as a mobile hermit across physical and imagined locales. This highlights connections between physical place, use of material objects, imagination, and sense of self. Our analysis illustrates the value of paying attention to geographical locations and objects in social psychological research on homelessness.
