A prospective study was carried out to correlate the development of joint symptoms after rubella immunization with pre- and post-immunization rubella-specific immunological responses. Arthralgia or arthritis or both occurred in 10 of 37 adult female volunteers at a mean time of 17.0 days after immunization with the RA 27/3 rubella vaccine. All individuals studied before immunization were seronegative for rubella by either the hemagglutination inhibition or the single radial hemolysis technique. In contrast, rubella enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or lymphoproliferative responses or both were

Primary and secondary (boosted) memory CD8 T cells exhibit differences in gene expression, phenotype and function. The impact of repeated antigen stimulations on memory CD4 T cells is largely unknown. To address this issue, we utilized LCMV and Listeria monocytogenes infection of mice to characterize primary and secondary antigen (Ag)-specific Th1 CD4 T cell responses. Ag-specific primary memory CD4 T cells display a CD62L(lo)CCR7(hi) CD27(hi) CD127(hi) phenotype and are polyfunctional (most produce IFNγ, TNFα and IL-2). Following homologous prime-boost immunization we observed pathogen-specif

Ever since its development in the 1930's, the live-attenuated Yellow Fever virus vaccine YF-17D has been highly effective. Despite the increasing knowledge on the immune biology of the YF-17D vaccine, most studies have focused only on a few types of immune cells and pathways or mainly on the primary adaptive immune response to YF-17D vaccination. Here, we examined humoral, innate and adaptive cellular responses in a longitudinal YF-17D vaccination study in Switzerland, comparing both primary and booster vaccination. In contrast to the strong innate and adaptive immune response to the primary v

AIM: The aim of this study was to ascertain the beliefs and perceptions of practice nurses' influence about the uptake of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.
BACKGROUND: Immunization decision-making for parents is a complex process. Principle health professionals involved in immunization programmes are health visitors, general practitioners, and practice nurses. There is evidence that health visitors and general practitioners influence parental immunization decision-making. However, there is a lack of evidence about the influence of the practice nurse despite their well-documented role i

BACKGROUND: Designing effective immunization programs requires a strong understanding of how the factors affecting vaccine uptake interplay. In this review, we analyze the relationships between the Behavioral and Social Drivers (BeSD) of routine immunization using qualitative systems mapping (QSM).
METHODS: In this review, we analyzed 92 experimental and quasi-experimental impact evaluations (IEs) from 11 LMICs that were published between 2010 and 2020. Secondary literature on the study context or the intervention was also included. The WHO's behavioral and social determinants (BeSD) framewor

Immunizations are extremely efficient in prevention of diseases with a lethal potential. Healthy adults, pregnant women and patients suffering from chronic diseases may have a different benefit from vaccine available in our country. Numerous health problems need to be addressed during a short consultation, relegating immunization to a position of secondary importance. This paper will address the issue of immunization in special circumstances such as: healthy adults, pregnant women, HIV-infected patients, patients with end-stage renal disease, patients with chronic liver diseases and solid orga

OBJECTIVES: To discuss what is presently known about recent mumps outbreaks and what solutions can be suggested to ensure more complete protection against mumps.
METHODS: PubMed was used to search for all of the studies published over the last 15 years using the key words "mumps" or "mumps virus" or "mumps vaccine". More than 1500 articles were found, but only those published in English or providing evidence-based data were included in the evaluation.
RESULTS: Prevention of mumps remains an unsolved problem. Available vaccines are effective but the protection they evoke declines over time. T

In terms of disease prevention, reduction of adverse reactions, and cost benefit studies, a strong case can be made for a policy that focuses on assuring high levels of primary immunization with tetanus and diphtheria (Td) toxoids and abandons the decennial Td booster in favor of a single midlife booster at age 50-65 years. The addition of acellular pertussis antigens to Td for routine use in adults has potential problems in terms of schedule, cost, and possible adverse reactions. Careful risk/benefit studies are necessary to evaluate its effectiveness and priority.

Although the effectiveness of tetanus toxoid (TT) immunization during pregnancy in preventing maternal and neonatal tetanus is well established, in many developing countries, TT immunization programs are underutilized. The objective of this study was to examine factors associated with sufficient TT immunization among postpartum women in Kenya. Population based secondary data analysis was conducted using de-identified data from the 2008-2009 Kenyan Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) for 1,370 female participants who had a live birth during or within 12 months of the cross-sectional survey. A new model for the generation of specific antitumor cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) was proposed. In contrast to other models, it allows to generate effector CTL without immunization in vitro. C57BL/10 mice or/and C57BL/6 mice were immunized by injection with gamma-irradiated syngeneic tumor cells into the footpads. For estimation of cytotoxic activity, chromium-51 release assay was used. It has been shown that effector CTL were absent in the lymph nodes in 1-fold as well as 2-fold immunization. Cytotoxic cells have not been found in 1-fold immunization even after maturation of the lymphocytes

The incidence of meningococcal infections undergoes secular variations with modifications in the distribution of identified serotypes. Rhinopharyngeal carriage of meningococci, common in the community, is the natural means of immunization. Prevalence of this carriage varies across age groups and communities, as well as according to whether or not cases are present in the community under study. Identified factors that promote transmission of the bacteria include crowded living conditions, poor socioeconomic conditions, and, more controversially, respiratory tract viral infections. Development o

INTRODUCTION: Neisseria meningitidis causes invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), with the highest incidence observed in infants and young children. Meningococcal serogroups A, B, C, W, X, and Y account for almost all IMD cases worldwide. Available meningococcal vaccines targeting serogroups A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY) include those conjugated to diphtheria toxoid (MenACWY-D), diphtheria protein cross-reactive material 197 (MenACWY-CRM197), and tetanus toxoid (MenACWY-TT). MenACWY-TT is indicated for use starting at 6 weeks of age.

Based on the evidence available, the Vaccines Advisory Committee (VAC) of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics reports and comments on the new developments in vaccines that have taken place in 2005 and recommends some modifications to the vaccination schedule for 2006. In agreement with changes in the product monographs for the meningococcal C vaccine, the VAC recommends two doses for the three commercially available preparations with a booster dose in the second year of life. The European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) has temporarily suspended the sale of the Hexavac vaccine due to doub

Protective immunity to diseases preventable by routine vaccination is lost over time following allogeneic and autologous blood and marrow transplantation. Adoptive transfer of immunity from donors to recipients after allogeneic transplantation is not sufficient to prevent this decline. Systematic reimmunization is necessary at appropriate time intervals following transplantation to re-establish immunity. Response to vaccination depends upon the type of transplant, the source of cells, the immune status of the patient, and the vaccine being used. While inactivated or subunit vaccines are safe i

In New South Wales, health screening of school entrants provides the only mechanism for routine monitoring of immunisation uptake in children. School health nurses are in the best position to improve the compliance with immunisation at this age. We compared two interventions to be used by the nurses to increase immunisation uptake in school entrants who reported missing either the measles-mumps vaccine and/or the pre-school diphtheria-tetanus toxoid and oral polio vaccine boosters. Parents in the passive intervention group were sent a letter and leaflet encouraging immunisation; the active int
